‘Hitch' Director Says Will Smith ‘Tried to Back Out Three Days Before Shooting' and ‘Is Developing a Sequel Without Me': ‘I Never Heard From Him' After 2005
'Hitch' director Andy Tennant marked the 20th anniversary of the romantic-comedy with a new Business Insider interview in which he opened up about clashing with star Will Smith. As the filmmaker put it: 'I didn't want cheap jokes, but he didn't trust me.'
'We had our difficulties,' Tennant said of his relationship with Smith. 'The movie I wanted to make and the movie Will wanted to make, neither one of those movies is as good as the movie we made together. It was a battle. [Smith's wife] Jada [Pinkett Smith] was a big help. She kind of seconded some of my instincts. There was a time during prep when I was pushing back. A lot of crazy shit that was happening.'

'Hitch' starred Smith as a professional date doctor who helps teach men how to impress women, but he's shocked to discover that his usual tricks and advice don't work on a columnist (Eva Mendes) he falls hard for. The supporting cast included Kevin James and Amber Valletta. 'Hitch' was a critical favorite and grossed $371.6 million worldwide to become the tenth highest-grossing film of 2005.
Tennant told Business Insider that he sparred with Smith during the development of 'Hitch' over 'crazy story ideas,' adding: 'There was a draft that Will brought in that I was not a fan of. I finally told the studio that I was more afraid of Will making that version of the movie than I was about them firing me. Because I knew they were right on the edge of firing me before we even began shooting. And to Will's credit, we didn't go with that draft. I don't think I was ever in anyone's favor.'
'I think there was a lot of fear doing a big, expensive romantic comedy with Will,' he continued. 'It was fraught with peril. Will tried to back out three days before we started shooting. He wanted to shut down and work on it some more. It was madness.'
Despite the clashes, 'Hitch' was a box office success and Tennant 'submitted a proposal for a sequel.' But 'Hitch 2' never got made in the aftermath of the first movie's global success, a surprise given Smith's franchise bonafides.
'But I guess Will is developing a 'Hitch' sequel without me,' Tennant revealed. 'I just found out about it three months ago. I had a really good idea for a sequel, and I was talking to an executive at Sony, and he said Will's production company is developing a sequel. Hey, that's Hollywood.'
'I don't have anything against Will,' he continued. 'He hired me to make this movie. It was not an easy job for anybody, but we went around the world with the movie. Even the hard times he'd always say, 'Wait until the junket. We're gonna go around the world with this' — and we did, and it was great. It was the most amazing trip I had ever been on. And when it was over, my time with Will was over. That was it. And I have never heard from him since.'

Sarah Jessica Parker Shares Reaction to Learning Fans Didn't Like ‘And Just Like That' Character Che
Sarah Jessica Parkeradmitted she was surprised to learn that fans didn't like And Just Like That…character Che Diaz, played by Sara Ramirez. While speaking to The Guardian on June 6, Sarah, 60, said she had no idea that so many fans didn't like the controversial nonbinary character until a friend brought it up to her. "A friend of mine brought it up to me, and it's like: 'What are you talking about?'" she recalled. "And he said: 'Yeah, there's all this conversation.' I've been an actor for 50 years, and I've almost never paid attention to peripheral chatter." Sarah added that she "loved working with" Sara, 49, who is also nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. It was revealed in February 2024 that Sara would not return as standup comic Che after appearing on And Just Like That… for the first two seasons. Shortly after the show's debut in 2021, Che quickly became a meme and the butt of the joke among many viewers. The Grey's Anatomy alum reflected on the backlash while speaking to Variety in June 2022. "Other people's opinions of a character - that's not something I can allow into my process," they said. "I choose what I receive, right? That's the beauty of being grown - I don't have to receive everything!" Che was romantically involved with original Sex and the City character Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon), while they also worked on a podcast with Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker). In addition to discussing the backlash surrounding Che, Sarah also reflected on Sex and the City's popularity among Gen Z. "It's curious, because their lives are so different – the language they use around dating is different," she told The Guardian about the younger generation. "They're less patient. They're more punitive. They're not as forgiving of people's shortcomings. I'm not condemning it, it's just what I've heard. So it's really interesting that they feel so spirited about it." One topic that the younger viewers have strong opinions on is Carrie's relationship with Mr. Big (Chris Noth). The couple dated on and off throughout the original series, and they faced several obstacles before they wed during the first Sex and the City movie in 2008. Big eventually died during the season premiere of And Just Like That… The relationship has faced backlash, with many viewers believing that they didn't have a healthy dynamic. "It doesn't mean they aren't objecting to Big and Carrie's relationship, or the way he treated her, or choices Carrie made," Sarah continued about the younger fans' views of the show. "But people had those strong feelings back then, too." When asked if she was disappointed by any of the original show's plot lines, Sarah admitted that viewers could sometimes be "disheartened" by seeing what the characters went through. "But the show is also about finding home and contentment, whatever home means to you," she continued. "I feel that 20- and 30-year-olds should be searching. There should be something in the distance that's important and exciting, and worth the wait. Part of it is rather dreary that great women of all ages are still incredibly frustrated by the dating scene, but I also see a lot of happy endings." Copyright 2025 A360 Media. All rights reserved.

Music legend Nile Rodgers on Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees receiving prestigious honor tonight: "The most important award"
A look at the 2025 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees The 2025 class of the Songwriters Hall of Fame will be inducted on Thursday night, with a group that includes music legends George Clinton and The Doobie Brothers, among others. "I think that as a composer, nothing means more to you than your art form touching, as my old guitar tutor would say, the lives of a million strangers," said Nile Rodgers, a multi-Grammy award winner and chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Rodgers was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016. There are currently more than 470 members in the organization. "I've won a bunch of Grammys and of course I love the Grammys, but when I got into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, that was the most important award," he said. "So when you walk into the room where you know that you're doing something that touches people that you will never meet but somehow it impacts their lives in an important way, that's just incredible." The Doobie Brothers: Tom Johnston, John McFee, Michael McDonald and Patrick Simmons. Clay Patrick McBride Rodgers called composing a "solitary" process, saying, "we create something from nothing." "It's just an idea or it's your, the color of your dress or something like that. We turn this nonfictional event into something that's consumable by strangers," he said. Rodgers, who started in classical music and has also produced jazz, has collaborated with stars from David Bowie to Madonna. But he admitted he only knew one song would be an instant hit. "I knew 'We Are Family' was a monster, and I thank God I had creative control and I stopped the record company from putting that out first. Because if they had put that out first, we would have never heard the rest of the album," Rodgers said. The 2025 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction will be held tonight in New York City. This year's inductees are: George Clinton Ashley Gorley Mike Love Tony Macaulay Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald and Patrick Simmons of "The Doobie Brothers"

‘Stellar Blade' Crushes PlayStation PC Record With 183,000 Concurrents
Stellar Blade SHIFT UP Finally having broken free of PlayStation exclusivity, 2024 actioner Stellar Blade has absolutely dominated all other former PS exclusives that eventually headed to PC. As we speak, now having launched in all regions, Stellar Blade appears to have peaked at 183,830 players on Steam. Great by any metric, but especially in the context of other PlayStation PC releases. This is double the previous single-player record-holder, the 77,000 of Ghost of Tsushima, and as we head to the weekend, who knows if it could eventually triple that. Here's a list of the other major PC releases from Sony: Stellar Blade SHIFTUP The difference is that some of these are years later rather than just over a year like Stellar Blade, but there's just no question this is a stunning launch from SHIFTUP's game. Although on Sony's end, they do not own this IP, and the future of the franchise's partnership with PlayStation is nebulous. A sequel has been confirmed, likely for 2027, according to a recent SHIFTUP presentation. The major exception to this PlayStation list is if we break out of single-player only games and include Helldivers 2, which dwarfs them all with its 458,709 peak. Even now, after a big recent update, it's still doing 100,000 players a night, and it has a bigger playerbase on PC than on PlayStation. Stellar Blade announced 1 million sales in a month after release, and I imagine we may be in for some sales news shortly from this PC release, which is clearly going great. The game is unsurprisingly the #1 seller on Steam right now. A new content pack dropped with this port, but besides that, I have to believe that a recent free demo of the game convinced many to pick up the full copy. As for me, I highly recommend the game. It was one of my favorites of 2024, and I sunk 50 hours into two playthroughs (NG+ is very well-handled in the game). Since I put it down, the game has added some gameplay updates, things like photo mode and what has to be approaching 100 new outfits by now (I'm not even sure that's an exaggeration). Above all else, it's just a really fun action game, and I'm looking forward to the sequel. Give it a try yourself if you didn't snag it on PlayStation.
