Rockford Library's Digilibrary van delivers tech access on the go
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Public Library's 'DigiLibrary' van launched in March, bringing computer classes to the community.
'Everybody is kind of expected to have access to technology, a smartphone, computer access, the ability to use all of those things. And if they don't, there's a lot that you can't really do,' said RPL's Digital Librarian Tiffany Hayes.
Hayes said the DigiLibrary has helped a broad spectrum of Rockford residents. On Tuesday, it visited the Brooke Road United Methodist Church, at 404 Brooke Road.
'Monday's hour rotating staff of the senior residences, and they get books and also can ask for help with their devices, laptops, computers, that kind of thing,' Hayes said. 'And Monday afternoons, we have a stop at the Irving Avenue Strong community house, and that's like an after-school program. So the kids get computers, books, STEM activities, that kind of thing.'
Hayes said the staff also help at Carpenter's Place, the nonprofit homeless advocacy group, on Wednesdays, creating resumes.
Seniors, like Sandy McCallum, said they have seen the biggest impact.
'People need to be able to come in and learn how to use computers, learn word processing, learn how to make an application, learn how to fax something, how to copy something,' she said. 'They are amazed that they can come here and get all that. And it doesn't cost anything. In this day and age, we all need to learn to use computers because that's where we get our information so much of the time.'
Hayes added, 'It definitely has room to grow, but it's had a really positive response so far and really successful kind of rollout to the places that we're able to be. We consistently get questions of do we have computer classes? Can I get there? You know, how do I get on a computer, that kind of thing. So, yeah, I definitely think it's going to grow.'

Rockford Pride Parade, Fire Dept's 911 3K Run to shut roads on Saturday
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Two Rockford events on Saturday will result in some road closures that motorists will need to be aware of. The second annual begins at noon on Saturday, June 7th, running on E. State Street from 3rd Street to Wyman. State Street will be closed to traffic starting at 10 a.m. Any vehicles parked in the parade route will be towed by 11 a.m., officials said. Rockford Public Schools are holding graduation ceremonies at the BMO Center at the same time, and drivers are asked to use caution. Rockford Fire Department's annual takes place on the city's East side, with road closures beginning at 7 a.m. The 911 3K Run kicks off at Fire Station #5 on Trainer Road. FLC recognizes Jonathan Hayes as a 2025 Home Rule Hero
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Florida League of Cities has recognized City Manager of the City of Panama City, Jonathan Hayes, as a 2025 Home Rule Hero on Wednesday. According to a news release, the FLC recognized Hayes for his exceptional advocacy during the 2025 Legislative Session. The prestigious award honors municipal officials who relentlessly defend the principle of home rule, the right of local governments to address community needs with local solutions, free from excessive state interference. The 2025 Home Rule Hero Award honors almost 180 municipal officials statewide. The FLC Chief of Legislative Affairs, Casey Cook, commended the leaders for their dedication. 'The dedication and effort of these local officials who tirelessly advocated for local decision-making was a difference-maker this legislative session,' Cook said. Hayes was appointed City Manager of Panama City in January 2024. He has a distinguished public service career that includes roles as Director of Public Works and Logistics. City of Panama said that Hayes' role has included managing vital infrastructure and public services, underscoring his commitment to enhancing the City's resilience and quality of life. During the legislative season, Hayes was constantly engaged with state lawmakers, their staff and senior agency officials, where he provided valuable local perspectives on important issues. Hayes's efforts contributed to the advancement of the League's legislative agenda, promoting glocal voices in policymaking. Live music acts announced for Rockford's 2025 4th of July Celebration of Freedom
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The performers scheduled to bring live music to Rockford's 61st Fourth of July Celebration of Freedom have been announced. This year, the annual fireworks display will be fired off from the Jefferson Street Bridge, a change from prior years. Fireworks were shot from the bridge over 25 years ago. Davis Park, the traditional home to the celebration, is currently undergoing a $12 million .
