Penang's crackdown on 'Mat Rempit' continues
The operation, dubbed Op Tutup (Samseng Jalanan Bersepadu), was jointly conducted by the state and Seberang Prai Tengah police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Departments, Seberang Jaya police station, Bukit Aman EMPV and Plus auxiliary police.
It was carried out between KM130 and KM135 (northbound) of the expressway, spanning from the Seberang Jaya roundabout to Samagagah.
"Police detected several groups of youths gathered by the highway to witness illegal motorcycle races, which had caused unease among other road users during the weekend holiday.
"Most of these riders were seen speeding, riding against traffic flow, weaving dangerously between vehicles and using illegally modified exhausts, which posed serious risks to themselves and other motorists," police said in a statement.
During the operation, 350 motorcycles were inspected.
Apart from the 245 summonses issued, nine people were arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
Authorities remain committed to tackling illegal street racing and reminded the public to obey traffic laws for everyone's safety.
"Such operations will continue regularly to curb these dangerous activities," police said.

Open manhole may have caused JB van incident injuring 11 students, says exco member
JOHOR BARU: The school van carrying 16 students involved in an accident on Friday (July 18) is believed to have hit an open underground cable manhole, says a Johor state executive councillor. State works, transportation and infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said he received a report about the incident, which occurred at Jalan Abdul Samad here at 7.01am. 'According to the police's preliminary report, the van is believed to have lost control after hitting an uncovered underground cable hole. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. 'TM has confirmed that no maintenance work had been carried out in the area recently,' he said in a statement on Friday. He added that the condition of the manhole suggests there may have been an attempted theft. 'I urge members of the public to come forward with any information or evidence, such as video recordings, related to the suspected theft. 'Anyone who may have witnessed irresponsible individuals opening the cover and leaving the manhole exposed is urged to lodge a report at the Johor Baru South district police headquarters to assist with the investigation,' he added. Earlier, Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the school van skidded and overturned along Jalan Abdul Samad here while transporting students from several schools here. 'The van is believed to have hit an uncovered drainage hole on the left side of the road, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to overturn,' he said. He added that 17 victims were on board, including the driver, nine male students and seven female students aged between nine and 15. 'Of the 17 victims, 11 sustained minor injuries and were treated in the yellow zone at Hospital Sultanah Aminah, while the rest did not suffer any serious injuries,' he said. ACP Raub said the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving causing an accident. "The driver is currently having his statement recorded to assist in the investigation," he added.

11 schoolchildren injured after van overturns in Johor Bahru
JOHOR BAHRU — Eleven schoolchildren were injured when the school van they were travelling in overturned on Jalan Abdul Samad here today. Johor Bahru Selatan police chief ACP Raub Selamat said the 7.01 am incident occurred when the van is believed to have struck an open sewer manhole on the left side of the road, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. 'A total of 17 people were involved, comprising the 41-year-old male driver and 16 schoolchildren aged between nine and 15,' he said in a statement today. He said those injured were treated at the Yellow Zone of Sultanah Aminah Hospital here, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Meanwhile, Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh urged anyone with information or recordings related to a suspected theft attempt involving the manhole to come forward. 'I was informed that the manhole cover belongs to Telekom Malaysia, which confirmed that no work was being carried out in the area by its contractors recently. 'The uncovered manhole may be linked to an attempted theft of its cover. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Johor Bahru Selatan District Police Headquarters,' he said in a statement. Earlier, state Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the van was transporting students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Mohd Khalid, SMK Aminuddin Baki and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Jalan Yahya Awal. He gave assurance that all the victims would receive the best possible medical care and health monitoring.
