Low cancer rate in A.P. prompts govt. to go for another exclusive survey
While a cancer survey is already being conducted in the State as part of the NCD-3 from November 2024, the results showed that cancer prevalence is too low in Andhra Pradesh. He said cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in the country, and felt the reasons for low prevalence in A.P. have to be properly examined through another survey.
Speaking at a three-day workshop being held for health staff for the NCD-4 survey in Mangalagiri on July 24, Thursday, Mr. Satya Kumar Yadav said while as part of the ongoing survey, the State government had set a target of screening 4.10 crore people, so far, 70% of the target has been completed.
Around 3 crore people have been screened for three types of cancer: oral, breast and cervical. Around 2.90 crore people have been screened for oral cancer, and 2 crore for breast and cervical cancers, the Minister said, adding the results showed that only 0.35% of the screened people were diagnosed with one of these cancers. The number is low when compared to the cancer incidence in the country, he added.
The Minister said the results could be due to lack of awareness among people about cancer or due to 'lack of skills' among the health staff, or due to lengthy questionnaires or misconceptions among people. Lack of coordination among field-level workers and 'lack of supervision by senior health workers' could also be the reasons.
While the NCD-3 survey has not brought out the desired results, it cannot be said that it has failed. It is commendable that the survey was carried out for 3 crore people despite challenges. The survey has given the department an understanding of its own strengths and weak points that can be addressed in the NCD survey 4.
Having lost his mother and a sibling to cancer, the Minister said he is aware of the consequences of cancer, and expressed concern that around 75,000 new cancer cases are reported in the State every year and 30,000 people die annually.
He said the NCD-4 survey would begin after the ongoing survey ends in August.

ACB flags major lapses at NTR Hospital; 22 medical staff face action
VIJAYAWADA: Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav has ordered a swift inquiry into serious irregularities at NTR Hospital in Anakapalle, following an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) report indicting 22 medical personnel. The report, based on a surprise inspection in February 2020 and submitted in June this year, recommended major penalties against the then District Coordinator of Health Services (DCHS), nine doctors, and 12 nurses. Citing lapses such as unauthorised canteen operations, failure to disclose patient meal details, irregular civil works, poor food quality monitoring, and mismanagement of hospital duties, the report painted a grim picture of hospital administration. The DCHS was specifically accused of failing to enforce staff attendance and neglecting key supervisory responsibilities. Disciplinary action has also been recommended against nine doctors for negligence, and 12 nurses for patient overexposure, poor hygiene, lack of diet charts, and improper medicine documentation. The Minister also ordered action against a driver for fuel misappropriation worth Rs 74,000 and a sanitation worker for unauthorised medical dressing duties. Reaffirming his commitment to reform public healthcare, Minister Yadav said the move underscores the government's zero-tolerance approach to corruption and inefficiency. Since assuming office, he has prioritised staff accountability, regular inspections, and performance-based transfers. In recent months, the government has reassigned hospital superintendents, medical college principals, office superintendents, and clerical staff to plug loopholes in governance. Non-performers were removed and replacements appointed on merit. Field-level officers, including District Medical and Health Officers (DMHOs), were instructed to ensure strict implementation of health schemes and maintain discipline in operations. Calling the ACB report a reminder of past administrative failures, the Minister assured continued reforms to restore public confidence in government hospitals and ensure better service delivery.

Minister orders inquiry into Anakapalli DCHS and 21 medical staff for ‘dereliction of duties'
Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav ordered that an inquiry be conducted into the alleged irregularities committed by 22 medical staff at a government hospital in Anakapalli district. According to a press release from the Medical and Health Department on Sunday, a team from Anti-Corruption Bureau (ABC) had conducted surprise inspections at the hospital in February 2020 and submitted the findings to the department last month. Based on the ACB report, the Minister said that a speedy inquiry should be conducted and disciplinary action taken against the 22 medical staff of the hospital, including District Coordinator of Health Services (DCHS), nine doctors and 12 head and staff nurses. The hospital had been operating a canteen without a valid licence and did not have proper documentation of the food being served to patients, the release said. The canteen failed to serve quality food and the nurses did not perform their duties properly, the Minister said quoting the report. The ACB held the DCHS responsible for failing to supervise the workings of the hospital and suggested penalties for the the official and also disciplinary action against the other 21 medical staff for dereliction of duties. Meanwhile, the Minister said that the incident from 2020 reflects the situation of government hospitals under the previous regime. After the TDP-led NDA government came to power, regular meetings are being held to review and monitor attendance of medical staff and to check corruption in government hospitals, the Minister said. It has been made clear to the district-level officers that they would be responsible for proper implementation of health schemes and performance of medical staff, he added.
