Ex-Palestinian Basketball Player Dies In Israeli Strike Days After Death Of ‘Palestinian Pelé'
Mohammed Shaalan was killed in an Israeli strike near an aid distribution centre while attempting to secure food and medicines for his ill daughter Maryam.
Former Palestinian national basketball player Mohammed Shaalan was killed in an Israeli strike near an aid distribution centre in Gaza's Khan Younis on Tuesday, according to reports.
Shaalan was killed while attempting to secure food and medicine for his sick daughter, Maryam, and the rest of his family, according to Middle East Eye. Maryam reportedly suffered from kidney failure and severe blood poisoning, and Shaalan had repeatedly appealed for help in proper medical treatment.
Also known as al-Zilzal – which means 'The Earthquake' – Shaalan was a popular figure in Palestinian sports, having played for several local teams including Khadamat Al-Bureij, Khadamat Al-Maghazi, and Khadamat Khan Younis, as well as representing the national team.
Israeli forces have killed at least 670 Palestinian athletes since the genocide in Gaza began nearly two years ago, according to Palestinian sports officials. The UN said at least 1,857 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes while seeking food since late May.
Israel's offensive has killed at least 62,122 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has come under growing pressure at home and abroad to end the war.
This came days after ' Palestinian Pele ' Suleiman al-Obeid was killed when Israeli forces targeted people waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) said in a statement.
Obeid, who was born in Gaza City and played 24 international matches for the Palestine team, was married and had five children. In October 2023, Salah urged world leaders to unite and permit humanitarian aid into Gaza to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
The incident received widespread attention when Liverpool star player Mohamed Salah criticised UEFA for posting a tribute to Obeid without mentioning that he died after being struck by Israeli gunfire in the Gaza Strip. 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?" he said in response to UEFA's tribute.

Big B took to his blog, where he shared a picture posing with the Women's Ice Hockey team on the sets of the show. 'What a surprise and the most honoured moment to be with the entire team on KBC .. and to learn of their journey and the hardships they face and faced… But NEVER say NEVER to lady .. they shall prove you wrong .. The Indian team clinched bronze at the IIHF Asia Cup in Al Ain, UAE, with a commanding 3–1 win over Thailand in the third-place playoff last month. Talking about Amitabh, the torrential rains have reached the doorstep of the Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan. Videos circulating online show severe waterlogging outside his Juhu residence's Jalsa, which claims that the actor himself is spotting clearing water with a wiper. Though this claim remains unverified, the images of knee-deep flooding at the superstar's properties highlight how even the city's most exclusive localities are struggling under the weight of the monsoon. Pratiksha, his earlier residence where Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai's wedding was held, has seen its premises inundated. A video shared by a fan shows the lane submerged and staff working hard to manage the situation. 'No Longer Represents Me...': Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif Slams Former Manager Over Retirement Rumours
The 26-year-old pugilist accused her former manager, Nasser Yesfah, of betraying her trust and her nation with false statements. Olympic gold medal-winning Algerian boxer Imane Khelif denied claims made by her former manager Nasser Yesfah, about putting her career on hold on Wednesday. The 26-year-old pugilist, who was at the centre of a gender row at the Paris Olympics 2024 as she claimed gold in the 66Kg category, accused her former manager, Yesfah, of betraying her trust and her nation with false and malicious statements. 'I would like to make it clear to the public that the reports of my retirement from boxing are false," she said in an update on social media platform Facebook. 'This person no longer represents me in any way," she said. 'I have never announced my retirement from boxing," the boxer reiterated. 'I remain committed to my sporting career, I train regularly and I maintain my physical condition between Algeria and Qatar in preparation for upcoming events," the pugilist added. A French newspaper quoted Yesfah, stating that the Algerian had retired from boxing, without specifying if it was permanent. The world boxing championships are scheduled to take place in Liverpool from September 4-14, with the registration deadline set for Monday. Khelif missed the event in Eindhoven after World Boxing introduced mandatory gender tests amid demands to strip her of the medal she won at the quadrennial event in Paris. Khelif secured a gold medal at the Paris Olympics last summer, facing international scrutiny along with Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, another gold medalist. The previous governing body for Olympic boxing, the Russian-dominated International Boxing Association (IBA), disqualified both fighters from its 2023 world championships for failing unspecified eligibility tests. However, the IBA was removed due to prolonged controversy and misconduct. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) supervised the last two Olympic boxing tournaments, applying sex eligibility rules from previous Olympics, under which Khelif and Lin were allowed to compete. World Boxing has since been provisionally approved as the boxing organiser for the 2028 Los Angeles Games and faces pressure from boxers and their federations to establish sex eligibility standards. view comments First Published: August 21, 2025, 09:39 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
