CBS, CBS Sports set to go dark on YouTube TV on Feb. 13, making March Madness, Masters unavailable

Yahoo13-02-2025

Sports fans excited about March Madness and the Masters coming up face a significant obstacle if they subscribe to YouTube TV.
Paramount announced on Thursday that its contract with YouTube TV is set to expire by the end of the night (Feb. 13) if a new agreement is not reached. That means CBS and CBS Sports among 21 other networks under the Paramount umbrella won't be available as of 11 p.m. ET on Thursday night, according to Front Office Sports.
In certain markets, local CBS News affiliates won't be available, either. The list of affected affiliates includes top 10 TV markets like New York, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston and Atlanta.
The two sides have approximately a month to resolve their carriage dispute before men's college basketball and golf fans are deprived of two of the year's biggest sporting events. The first round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament is scheduled to tip off on March 18, while the Masters begins on April 10.
Both of those events will be available for streaming on Paramount Plus.
As could be expected, YouTube TV and Paramount are each pointing a finger at the other side in the carriage dispute reaching this point.
"We've been working hard to reach a fair agreement with Paramount that allows us to keep their channels, including CBS and CBS Sports, on YouTube TV without passing on additional costs to our subscribers," YouTube said in a statement. "Unfortunately, despite our good faith negotiations, we haven't been successful yet."
"YouTube TV is prioritizing their own interests over a fair agreement," Paramount said on a website created to address the dispute.
YouTube TV said it will offer subscribers an $8 credit if the dispute keeps Paramount channels off the service for an extended period of time.
This is the second major carriage dispute between a TV provider and network conglomerate in six months. Last September, Disney channels went dark on DirecTV, preventing subscribers from watching LSU-USC college football game on ABC, a Braves-Phillies game on ESPN and US Open tennis on ESPN2.
That dispute lasted approximately two weeks before being resolved, costing subscribers the ability to watch several college football matchups, including Texas-Michigan on ABC, in addition to the Week 1 "Monday Night Football" telecast featuring the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers.

Bryce Harper activated from IL by Phillies after missing 27 games with left wrist inflammation

Bryce Harper is being activated from the injured list by the Philadelphia Phillies for Monday's matchup with the San Diego Padres. Harper, 32, has been on the IL since June 6 with right wrist inflammation. In 57 games this season. he's batting .258/.368/.446 with nine home runs, 13 doubles, 34 RBI and eight stolen bases. In addition to the wrist injury, Harper missed five games earlier this season after taking a fastball to his right elbow. Advertisement The Phillies decided to activate him after he had no setbacks following taking batting practice on Friday and facing pitches from two minor leaguers on Saturday. Harper rested and received treatment on Sunday and appeared ready to go for Monday. Harper acknowledged that his timing felt off during the Friday batting practice session, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that was corrected against Double-A Reading pitcher Jack Dallas and Joel Kuhnel from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The wrist isn't completely pain-free, according to Harper. But he isn't feeling pain, nor is there swelling in the area that was causing the most discomfort when he went on the IL and was shut down. Advertisement "Definitely way healthier than I was a couple weeks ago," Harper told Paul Casella. There is some concern for a recurring injury since Harper had issues with his wrist last season. Yet the hope is that various treatments from the Phillies' medical staff in addition to changes in his pregame routine will prevent the wrist from being aggravated again. Otto Kemp was called up from Triple-A when Harper went on the IL and has filled in at first base, third base and left field while batting .246/.325/.348 with one homer and 10 RBI in 77 plate appearances. When he was called up, Kemp was hitting 313/.416/.594 with 14 home runs and 55 RBI for Lehigh Valley. The Phillies went 13-14 during Harper's absence, but took over first place in the National League East at 49-35 as the New York Mets (48-37) have lost 13 of their past 16 games. Philadelphia has a 1.5-gqme lead going into Monday's slate of MLB games.

Phillies Trade Idea Lands Twins' Byron Buxton for Mick Abel and 26th Ranked Prospect

Phillies Trade Idea Lands Twins' Byron Buxton for Mick Abel and 26th Ranked Prospect originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies are clear buyers at the MLB trade deadline, and there is a lot that the team needs to resolve by then. While the bullpen is an issue, there's another area that is in dire need of an upgrade: center field. Advertisement Johan Rojas and Brandon Marsh aren't cutting it, and the team needs to explore other options. One way to resolve that issue is by making a trade, and a recent trade idea would be a perfect fit for the Phillies. Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report concocted a trade idea that would be a dream scenario for the Phillies if it were to occur. Miller proposed that the Phillies could acquire Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton for Mick Abel and the Phillies' 26th-ranked prospect. "2020 first-round pick Mick Abel would be a major chip to part with," Miller writes. "But the Phillies do have an excess of starting pitching, with Andrew Painter presumably close to ready for his MLB debut and Aaron Nola presumably returning from the IL at some point." Miller's trade idea would land the Phillies their new starting center fielder, in exchange for Abel and Alirio Farrabus, a catcher prospect ranked 26th overall in the Phillies system. Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mick Abel (40) throws a pitch during the second inning against the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Hartline-Imagn Images Buxton in 2025 is having an incredible season. In 66 games played, Buxton has 72 hits, 53 runs scored, 10 doubles, three triples, 19 home runs, 51 RBIs, 15 stolen bases, 25 walks, and 74 strikeouts. Advertisement He's batting .286 with a .575 slugging percentage and a .928 OPS. Buxton, the former All-Star, Gold Glove recipient, and Platinum Glove recipient, is in the middle of one of his best seasons offensively. If he can stay healthy, which has been an issue in his career thus far, Buxton could be on pace for his best season in his 11-year career. He'd resolve their center field issues, add a much-needed righty bat in the heart of the lineup. Buxton is signed through the 2028 season and is on a $100 million deal. While he'd be an expensive contract to pick up, the Phillies are in win-now mode. Buxton, for the cost of Abel and a lower-ranked prospect, would be an incredible pickup. Miller presented this idea as an "outrageous" trade, and there's good reason why. While Abel has been solid, moving him for Buxton would be highway robbery for the Phillies. Phillies Trade Idea Lands Pirates' Oneil Cruz as Max Kepler's Replacement

Phillies Trade Idea Lands Pirates' Oneil Cruz as Max Kepler's Replacement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Max Kepler made a ridiculous comment regarding his playing time after the Philadelphia Phillies' disastrous performance against the Houston Astros. Despite his struggles this season, he had complained that the Phillies misled him and that he deserves the starting role in left field. Advertisement Kepler is disgruntled, and the Phillies could be looking for his replacement. One solution for Jim Riley of Ballcap Sports could be found in a trade idea with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Riley presented a trade idea to send Pirates outfielder Oneil Cruz to the Phillies in exchange for Mick Abel, Aroon Escobar, and Dylan Campbell. While landing Cruz would be a nice addition, especially since he's under control through 2028, the players given up would be a lot. Abel is the Phillies' fifth-ranked prospect and has been solid in the Major Leagues since his call-up. His 3.47 ERA in five starts is a solid start to his MLB career, which, a year ago, looked like it was going up in smoke. Advertisement Campbell is the Phillies' 30th-ranked prospect and an outfielder with a .702 OPS between High-A and Double-A this season. The real prospect going to the Pirates is Escobar. While the team's 13th-ranked prospect, he's been raking in the Minors this year. In 2025, his .832 OPS is a solid mark, and he's been a riser in the Phillies system this year. Losing him would sting, but the player the Phillies are getting back is no slouch. Philadelphia Phillies left fielder Max Kepler (17) looks to see if he hit the ball fair or foul in the fourth inning as Miami Marlins catcher Agustín Ramírez (50) looks on at loanDepot Rassol-Imagn Images Cruz is one of the game's more exciting players. His speed and power are incredibly appealing, as he can score at any moment in any game. While he's been lazy defensively at times, moving to a postseason contender might help him get into the games more than languishing in Pittsburgh. Advertisement Despite Cruz not playing at his best this year, he still has decent numbers. In 74 games, Cruz has a .210 batting average, 15 home runs, and an NL-leading 27 stolen bases. Cruz also has a 104 OPS+, showing he's an above-average batter this year. With their major outfield issues, the Phillies could benefit greatly from landing Cruz. While the package Riley presented would be a lot, for 3.5 years of Cruz, the Phillies would have a fun outfield option for the foreseeable future. In a season where the Phillies are looking to win the World Series, this trade idea would help bolster a struggling offense and provide a spark to the team in one of the most electrifying players in baseball.
