Veteran striker Salomón Rondón grabbed two goals, with Miguel Rodriguez also netting, as the Mexican giants picked up a sixth continental title.
History at the Club World Cup
The Liga MX side will be making their fifth appearance at the competition, having also participated in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2017.
Their best showing came last time around as they claimed third place behind finalists Grêmio, whom they lost to in the semi-final, and winners Real Madrid. Al Jazira were easily seen off 4-1 in the third-place play-off as Pachuca made their mark on the world stage.
How did they perform in the 2024/25 season?
It's been a disappointing campaign for Pachuca, with elimination from the quarter finals of the Liga MX Clausura knockout stages.

They fell to Club América 2-0 on aggregate, which was not too surprising given they scraped into the playoffs via the play-in phase having finished 8th in the Apertura league phase.

Who is their star player?

The MVP and top scorer of the Champions Cup-winning side, Salomón Rondón has been the go-to guy for Pachuca since his arrival in 2024. The Venezuelan national team captain has 31 goals in 59 appearances for the club.

Other standout performers for the Liga MX side are Moroccan winger Oussama Idrissi, who leads the sides in assists this season, and Brazilian striker Kennedy, who has become a valuable source of goals.
Expected performance at the Club World Cup
Despite their wayward domestic form, the Mexicans will fancy their chances of making a run in the tournament.
Real Madrid are the overwhelming favourites to top Group H, and second place will be fought out between Pachuca, Al Hilal and RB Salzburg.

🎥 Foden ends goalless run with historic CWC strike against Wydad

Manchester City's Club World Cup campaign has raced out of the blocks after taking a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca. One of the tournament heavyweights in the summer tournament, City are sporting new signings Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders in the matchday XI, but it was academy product Phil Foden to set them off and running in Philadelphia. Advertisement The England international, who has struggled mightily in front of goal of late, bagged his first goal in 20 appearances for club and country, converting from inside the box after Wydad shot-stopper El Mehdi Benabid could only parry Savinho's shot right into his path. Foden controlled well before turning his effort into the gapping goal to bank the fastest in Club World Cup history, which he will no doubt hope will be a sign of things to come for the pending 2025/26 season. 📸 David Ramos - 2025 Getty Images

Mykhailo Mudryk charged by FA with breach of anti-doping rules, facing lengthy ban

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with a violation of the Football Association (FA)'s anti-doping rules and is facing a lengthy ban from football. The Ukraine international, 24, was provisionally suspended after returning an 'adverse finding in a routine urine test' in December and has not featured for the club since. Advertisement Mudryk went on to claim he had 'never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules' and said he was 'working closely with my team to investigate how this could have happened'. A violation of the FA's anti-doping regulations carries with it a maximum penalty of a four-year suspension. A ban could range from anywhere from two years to a month, based on any mitigating factors. An FA statement read: 'We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with anti-doping rule violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of regulations 3 and 4 of The FA's Anti-Doping Regulations. As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.' Mudryk was not included in Chelsea's squad for the ongoing Club World Cup in the United States, while ahead of the tournament, his squad number 10 was given to Cole Palmer. Mudryk was not mentioned in the Chelsea statement announcing the news. Chelsea have been approached for comment. The Athletic reported in December that multiple sources, who wish to remain anonymous as they are not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, had said Mudryk tested positive for meldonium following international duty with Ukraine in November. Meldonium is an anti-ischemia medication and is not approved for use by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but is prescribed in parts of eastern Europe. Per the USADA (the United States Anti-Doping Agency), it is typically used clinically to treat 'those suffering from heart conditions, such as low blood flow to the heart and angina'. For athletes, it can assist with endurance and the capacity to recover from exercise. The substance was added to the World Anti-Doping Authority's banned list in January 2016. Former tennis player Maria Sharapova tested positive for it two months later and was initially banned for two years before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) later reduced the suspension to 15 months on appeal. Mudryk joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in his native Ukraine for £62million ($78.9m) in January 2023. He has struggled to become a regular starter at the club in the two years since and has scored 10 goals in 73 appearances. He last played for Chelsea in a Conference League game against German side Heidenheim on November 28, in which he scored. Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca had explained Mudryk as being 'out' or 'ill' between that match and the news breaking of his positive anti-doping test. Chelsea's statement on December 17 said Mudryk 'has confirmed categorically that he has never knowingly used any banned substances'. Advertisement 'This has come as a complete shock as I have never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules, and am working closely with my team to investigate how this could have happened,' Mudryk said. 'I know that I have not done anything wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the pitch soon. I cannot say any more now due to the confidentiality of the process, but I will as soon as I can.' The FA's anti-doping regulations state that any breaches will be dealt with as strict liability violations, meaning that a player will be found guilty if a prohibited substance is found in their body. The regulations add that it is not necessary to demonstrate intent and that a player's alleged lack of intent or knowledge is also not considered a valid defence.
