Diabetes Care: Chewing These Leaves On An Empty Stomach Can Help Control Sugar Levels All Day

Last Updated: Chewing Belpatra leaves on an empty stomach every morning can help regulate blood sugar levels throughout the day, making it particularly beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes Bel tree leaves, commonly known as Belpatra, hold deep religious significance in Hinduism as they are considered sacred offerings to Lord Shiva. Beyond their spiritual importance, Belpatra has also been valued in Ayurveda since ancient times for its remarkable health benefits. Experts believe that chewing fresh Belpatra leaves on an empty stomach every morning can help regulate blood sugar levels throughout the day, making it particularly beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes. According to Ayurveda practitioners, Belpatra contains natural hypoglycaemic agents that help lower blood sugar. These compounds stimulate the pancreas' beta cells, aiding insulin production and improving the body's insulin sensitivity. As a result, regular consumption of Belpatra is believed to help the body manage blood sugar levels more effectively. The best time to consume Belpatra is early morning on an empty stomach. Experts recommend chewing 3-4 freshly washed leaves after removing the stem, which contains hard fibre that can be difficult to digest. For those who dislike its taste, 1 teaspoon of Belpatra juice can be consumed, either plain or with lukewarm water. Ayurveda texts describe Belpatra as part of Dashmool, the ten most powerful herbal medicines. Besides regulating blood sugar, it also supports liver health, improves digestion, and strengthens immunity. Research has shown that Belpatra extracts possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which not only help manage glucose levels but also reduce complications associated with diabetes. Its benefits, however, are not limited to diabetes. Belpatra also provides relief from stomach ailments such as acidity, ulcers, gas, and constipation. Its fibre and antioxidants aid detoxification, improve metabolism, and help maintain overall well-being. While Belpatra is natural and considered safe in Ayurveda, experts advise caution. People already on diabetes medication should consult their doctor or an Ayurvedic practitioner before consuming it to avoid sudden drops in blood sugar. Similarly, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children should only use Belpatra under medical guidance. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. High risks of diarrhoea and gut issues this monsoon: Bengaluru diabetologist shares 3 tips to protect your gut health

Monsoon season brings a host of problems, unpredictable weather, waterlogging, and insect infestations. All this takes a serious toll on your health, particularly your gut, which becomes more vulnerable to diarrhoea. Monsoon's weather conditions, like increased humidity and a subsequent rise in bacteria, result in contaminated water or spoiled food. This is why you need to be constantly vigilant about your gut health, especially since it is closely linked to immunity through the gut-immunity axis, indicating that a weakened gut can make you more susceptible to infections and slow down recovery. Monsoon invites a lot of health woes. Know how to stay hydrated.(Shutterstock) ALSO READ: 5 Ayurvedic detox tips for monsoon gut reset: CCF tea, easy-to-digest meals and more Dr Manohar KN, lead consultant, Physician and Diabetologist at Sparsh Hospital, Bengaluru, shared with HT Lifestyle how you can support your gut this monsoon. Causes of gut issues in monsoon Waterborne illness sees a rapid plunge in hydration levels because of loose motion and vomiting.(Shutterstock) First addressing the concern of contaminating sources that rain brings, he added, "Rainwater can mix with sewage, contaminating water sources and leading to waterborne diseases. Elevated humidity further accelerates bacterial and fungal growth in food and on surfaces. Improper storage of grains and pulses also contributes to mould-related food toxicity. How to support your gut health during diarrhoea? Diarrhoea is one of the most common consequences of waterborne illnesses, whether caused by food poisoning, typhoid, or viral infections. Diarrhoea, being a common symptom, shows how the gut is commonly the first to take a hit during illnesses. Further, diarrhoea includes the dangers of dehydration as well. Addressing all these doubts, Dr Manohar listed out 3 tips to help protect your gut if you are suffering from diarrhoea, and in general, some precautionary measures: 1. Hydrate if suffering from diarrhoea While home remedies like water, coconut water, and buttermilk help replenish fluids naturally, Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) are essential in more severe cases. With the right balance of salts and glucose, ORS enhances water absorption and effectively restores lost electrolytes, supporting quicker recovery. 2. Better diet Foods like curd, buttermilk, rice, and fermented products introduce probiotics into the digestive system. These support the balance of good bacteria. A nutrient-rich diet containing vitamin C (citrus fruits), vitamin D (sunlight, dairy), and zinc (nuts, legumes) also helps strengthen the immune response. Focus on freshly prepared, light meals such as soups, khichdi, and steamed vegetables. These are easier to digest and less likely to be contaminated. 3. Maintain hygiene Always consume boiled or filtered water. Avoid street food and raw vegetables that may carry pathogens. Breathing techniques that strengthen immunity

Breath is not merely oxygen exchange but the life force or prana that energises the body, mind, and spirit. In Ayurveda, correct breathing is one of the pillars of well-being. Through conscious and systematic breathing exercises, we not only quieten the mind but also build the body's immune shield. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a world where stress, pollution, and lifestyle-related disorders weaken immunity, Ayurvedic breathing exercises known as Pranayama provide a natural defense. Pranayama and immunity Image Credit: Canva Ayurveda defines breath as the pathway along which prana shakti (vital power) moves. Obstructions in this movement weaken immunity, disrupt digestion, and impact mental equilibrium. Methods such as Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) purify energy channels, balancing doshas and increasing oxygenation of blood. Regular use enhances lymphatic flow, allowing the body to eliminate toxins effectively. Another potent practice is Kapalabhati (skull-shining breath), which cleanses the breathing apparatus, increases metabolism, and tones abdominal organs. By activating digestion and loosening mucus, it increases ojas, the Ayurvedic vitality and immunity essence. Ayurvedic wisdom in daily breathing Image : Canva Ayurveda teaches that immunity is not merely a matter of staving off diseases but of keeping balance. Slow, deep breathing stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, and cortisol levels decrease. As one of the largest destroyers of immunity is chronic stress, keeping breath under control becomes an instant method of reestablishing inner balance. Bhramari Pranayama (humming bee breathing) is suggested for peace of mind and better sleep, both of which are essential for robust immunity. Even 5 -10 minutes daily can create a significant difference. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Seasonal practices for robust defense Respiratory practices can be modified based on the season. During winter, slow, deep breathing and soothing heating pranayamas such as Bhastrika build immunity to colds. Summer is the time for cooling breaths such as Sheetali, which soothe body heat and inflammation. This harmony with nature, a central Ayurvedic belief, yields lasting health gains. Breathing practices Contemporary institutions such as Patanjali have contributed to the renewal of these old techniques, bringing pranayama within reach of millions. Their systematic yoga courses emphasise the way regular practice of Anulom Vilom, Kapalabhati, and other pranayamas can enhance immunity naturally. Though never a substitute for the medical profession, they are very effective complementary practices grounded in real Ayurvedic tradition. Lifestyle and breathing together Ayurveda insists that pranayama works best alongside wholesome routines, balanced meals, adequate sleep, herbal support, and mental calmness. Herbs like Tulsi, Ashwagandha, and Giloy further strengthen immunity when combined with daily breathing rituals. Thus, breath becomes a bridge connecting body, mind, and environment. Hema Kandapal, a homemaker says, "I started doing Anulom Vilom and Bhramari during the pandemic, drawn by Ayurveda's emphasis on breath. Within weeks, I experienced fewer seasonal infections and a quieter mind. These easy techniques have now become my lifetime armour." Yashwant Kumar Pathak, says "As a person who works long stressful hours, I used to get sick frequently. Daily practice of Kapalabhati and deep breathing has increased my endurance and brought my allergies down. Ayurveda's knowledge of breathing has totally revolutionised my health." Breathing is life's most natural act, yet when done consciously, it becomes the most powerful medicine. Ayurveda shows us that immunity is not built in a day, it is cultivated daily, one mindful breath at a time.
