Kasi Delivery hands motorbikes to 20 young township entrepreneurs

Daily Maverick3 days ago
In a bid to tackle youth unemployment and boost township economies, 20 young entrepreneurs from across Gqeberha received motorbikes through the Kasi Delivery Youth Empowerment Programme.
The energy was electric in Veeplaas on Tuesday, August 5 as 20 brand-new motorbikes were officially handed over to youngsters through the Kasi Delivery Youth Empowerment Programme.
The event brought together key development players, including the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the Eastern Cape Development Corporation, the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency, Zero4One, Harambee and local business, Daku Spar.
Kasi Delivery helps young people obtain their driving licences and trains them in service delivery. Once trained, they operate their own delivery businesses under the Kasi Delivery brand, contributing a portion of their profits to support the next group of aspiring entrepreneurs.
Each partner reaffirmed their shared commitment to uplifting township economies, empowering young people and building sustainable local businesses.
Addressing the crowd, Eastern Cape MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism Nonkqubela Pieters said, 'These township entrepreneurs are no longer confined to the margins. They now have the tools and the platform to lead change on their own terms.
'Once spectators of opportunity, they are now active players in growing the local economy. This aligns with our mission to build an inclusive economy where no one is left behind.'
Pieters confirmed that the handover formed part of a broader provincial commitment to deliver 50 motorbikes, with 40 already handed over.
'An employed youth means decreased crime. This is about improving the Kasi (township) economy. We insure these bikes for a year, and then the entrepreneurs take over. We are building sustainability,' Pieters said.
'Make my dream come true'
For Kwanele Jebe from New Brighton, the handover marked the start of a long-envisioned mission. 'I've been unemployed for years. But now, I can make my dream come true, to deliver medical treatments to vulnerable community members who struggle to reach clinics,' said Jebe, who was inspired by his elderly relative's challenges accessing healthcare.
'Mobility is a privilege many don't have. I want to bridge that gap,' he said.
Another recipient, Thandokazi Nkosana, said she had studied at Lovedale College, but struggled to find work until she approached Kasi Deliveries.
'I'm the breadwinner at home, and now I can finally put food on the table. These bikes are the thin line between hunger and survival. I think it's also very important to note the inclusivity – women can do it too, and it's Women's Month! ' she said with a giggle.
'Restoring dignity'
The Eastern Cape Development Corporation's Ayanda Malabar said the programme went beyond economic stimulus; it was about restoring dignity. 'We are here to equip young people with the means to be independent, confident contributors to their communities,' he said.
At the centre of this success story is Kasi Delivery's founder Theo Gora, who proudly shared the company's progress.
'All our drivers make a minimum of R4,000 per month. Demand is growing and we're ready to expand to other regions in the province,' Gora said, adding that the next step was a custom-built app to complement their current WhatsApp-based system.
'We bridge the gap between suburbs and townships. Someone in Summerstrand may be afraid or lazy to drive to Zwide for traditional food like ulusu, that's where we come in. We unlock access and boost township businesses in the process.'
'Resilience, innovation'
Acting Executive Director for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture Wandisile Makwabe praised the resilience and innovation of the local youth.
'The pandemic exposed two urgent needs: access to food and access to opportunity. Our youth didn't wait for handouts; they created solutions,' Makwabe said. 'A group of young innovators from our townships built a food delivery app tailored for communities often excluded by platforms like Uber Eats. They filled a gap that mattered, and they did it with vision, courage and purpose.'
Makwabe emphasised that this was a prime example of development driven from within the community.
Member of the mayoral committee for economic development, Councillor Bassie Kamana, who delivered the vote of thanks, reinforced the power of this moment.
'To the young people here today, your passion is inspiring. The provision of motorbikes is not just a gesture; it's a sign of what we can achieve together,' he said. 'The future is in your hands, and it is bright.' DM

The financial burden on South African women: a silent struggle

Discover how South African women are navigating financial challenges as primary decision-makers in their households, according to new research from 1Life Insurance. This Women's Month, we explore the pressures they face and the resilience they show in managing their finances. Image: In honour of Women's Month, 1Life Insurance set out to uncover the true state of South African women's relationship with money - how they earn it, spend it, and secure their futures. The findings are staggering! Women are leading their families financially, often without support, and under intense pressure to make ends meet. Of the women surveyed, nearly half (48%) are single, and the majority are the primary financial decision makers in their households. Many are not just supporting their biological children but are also financially responsible for extended family members. Alarmingly, 40% of them are doing it alone, with no partner or co-parent. These results are a testament to the pressure women are facing when it comes to bearing the household load, and if we take a closer look at their financial concerns, there is no doubt that something has got to change if we want to better support these breadwinners and household leaders. In fact, the research indicates that insufficient income (43%) and debt or high living expenses (21%) are limiting them from becoming financially secure, with groceries and essentials (32%), rent (17%), and school fees or child related (17%) expenses making up the top 3 monthly expenses. From this, you can see that with 63% of their money going to essentials, women are not splurging but rather focusing on what matters most to simply make ends meet. What is concerning, however, is that the death of a loved one and financial crises make up almost 40% of life's most difficult experiences for South African women. Yet only 26% of women have life cover, 5% have dread disease, and 3% income protection in place, and so we have to ask ourselves… 'if something had to happen to me tomorrow and my family lost my income – how would they survive?' It is this shift in mindset that needs to take place to create a safe financial landing for South African women, especially those doing it alone! The good news is that despite these results, a very positive reflection of self-improvement has come through in the research, where women have cited financial independence & planning & as well as career advancement, as two key areas of personal development (62%), followed closely by self-love, self-awareness and breaking generational family cycles (55%). It is no secret that women have had to bear the financial burden for the better part of the last decade, with the shifting responsibilities and social dynamics facing us, but today there is not only a movement of women actively facing their financial struggles but a keen understanding of where they want to be and how they are going to get there - a sign of true resilience that can be celebrated this Women's Month. * Nyembe is the communications manager at 1Life Insurance. Multi-million rand tourism boost for Limpopo

Limpopo province has a new tourism development to boast about. A 30 million boutique hotel in the heart of Polokwane was launched today (6 August) amid much fanfare. Lesetja Mukwevho realised her dream of opening the Atrium Boutique Hotel which she co-founded with her husband, Joseph. Their hotel aims to serve the mid to high end market, something that was lacking in Polokwane. Mukwevho owns a majority 60% share in the venture, a celebrated fact as South Africa marks Women's Month. Funding for the establishment was secured from multiple institutions. The National Empowerment Fund (NEF) contributed R10 million, the Tourism Transformation Fund provided a R5 million grant and the Tourism Equity Fund loaned a sum of R9.8 million. The balance was paid by the Mukwevho's. The launch event highlighted the strides women are making in business in South Africa. The Deputy Minister in the National Department of Tourism, Maggie Sotyu were among the dignitaries in attendance. In her keynote address Sotyu said the new establishment would play a key role in meeting conferencing and accommodation needs in the province. 'Significantly, the hotel is recognised within the Municipality's Integrated Development Plan (IDP) as a catalytic project for advancing tourism growth and infrastructure in Polokwane, reinforcing its strategic alignment with both local and national development priorities. 'The significance of women in the tourism sector is multi-dimensional, impacting economic development, gender equality, community empowerment, and the cultural richness of destinations. When structures are inclusive and equitable, tourism can be a powerful tool for empowering women economically, offering both income and agency,' said Sotyu. During her address Sotyu informed guests of a R100 million cash injection into the Tourism Transformation Fund. The additional funds will source tourism projects in the pipeline and bolster black empowerment within the sector. The Atrium Boutique Hotel comprises 26 luxury rooms, a restaurant that seats 100, a 100 capacity conference centre, a 15 seater boardroom and bar. The establishment created 56 job opportunities thus far. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 11. Empower your inner leader: A Shero's journey to overcoming self-sabotage

Strategist and coach Aneesa Theron. Image: Supplied. On 30 August a Women's Month event is set to cut deeper than surface celebration. SHE Leads A Shero's Journey - Break Free from Self-Sabotage to Empower Your Inner Leader, will be held at InuWell at the V&A, a sanctuary for transformation, chosen with intention. Led by neuroscience based leadership strategist and coach Aneesa Theron, the event is for women across corporate, entrepreneurial and public sectors, who are ready to release perfectionism, people pleasing, imposter syndrome and burnout, to reclaim their power. Aneesa, founder of CRAFT Advisory Services, brings evidence-based tools rooted in neuroscience, systems thinking, and positive psychology to individuals and organisations seeking authentic meaningful change. Her clients span corporate teams, founders, and leadership programs across sectors. The event comes at a time when employee wellbeing, psychological safety, and authentic leadership are no longer 'soft skills,' but critical growth factors for teams and economies. We are planting seeds for women who are ready to lead authentically from within, and in companies that are ready to invest in real, human transformation. With rising disengagement, mental health decline, and overextended teams, this work is no longer optional. 'Women are the backbone of society, but we can't keep pouring from an empty vessel,' Theron says. 'This is personal,' Theron says. 'I didn't just study the science, I lived the survival. Raised in volatility, I became a people pleaser, saviour, and high performer to survive. These masks came at the cost of my voice and wellbeing. This event mirrors the very journey I took to break free, and now I empower others to do the same.' Video Player is loading.
