Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani led the tributes to Japanese baseball legend Shigeo Nagashima following his death on Tuesday aged 89.
Known as "Mr. Pro Baseball", Nagashima starred for Japan's most popular team, the Yomiuri Giants, winning nine straight Japan Series titles from 1965 to 1973.

He formed a lethal partnership with Sadaharu Oh, who holds the world record for hitting the most home runs, and the pair are credited with cementing baseball's status as Japan's favourite sport.
Their batting exploits captivated a Japanese public enjoying new economic prosperity out of the ruins of World War II, with families tuning in to watch games on black and white TV sets.
Nagashima's outsized personality and easy charisma made him a popular public figure and symbol of a confident new Japan.
He hit a dramatic walk-off home run to seal a win for the Giants in the first professional game ever attended by Japan's emperor in 1959.

"May your soul rest in peace," Ohtani wrote on Instagram to his 9.5 million followers.
Nagashima retired in 1974 after a 17-year playing career during which he won the Central League batting title six times and was home run king twice.
He played in 2,186 games and hit 444 home runs.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary said Nagashima was "a sunny person".
"He left so many brilliant records in the world of professional baseball for many years, and gave bright dreams and hopes to society as a national star," he said.

Despite initially rejecting the idea of moving outside Europe, Benjamin Pavard could change his mind. Indeed, Galtier is trying to convince the 29-year-old to accept Neom's proposal and switch to Saudi Arabia. Talks are ongoing as the former Lille boss continues to push for the Frenchman's transfer. However, they've failed to drum up any serious interest from Europe. Therefore, a transfer to Saudi Arabia is Pavard's best chance to leave San Siro by the end of the summer. Meanwhile, Inter would use the money from Pavard's sale to sign a new center-back.

India plans to ban online games played with money, citing addiction risks

By Aftab Ahmed and Aditya Kalra NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India's government plans to ban online games played with money, a proposed bill showed on Tuesday, in what would be a heavy blow for an industry that has attracted billions of dollars of foreign investment. Citing psychological and financial harm it says can be caused by such games, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 says that no person "shall offer, aid, abet, induce or otherwise indulge or engage in" the offering of online money games and such services. The 13-page bill, which has not yet been made public but has been reviewed by Reuters, describes an online money game as one played by a user by depositing money in expectation of winning monetary and other enrichment. The Indian market for such gaming is set to be worth $3.6 billion by 2029, venture capital firm Lumikai says. Endorsements by top Indian cricketers and other marketing efforts have boosted appeal and investor interest of real money gaming apps such as the popular fantasy cricket games operated by startups Dream11 and Mobile Premier League. Dream11 commands a valuation of $8 billion while Mobile Premier League is valued at $2.5 billion, PitchBook data shows. The Indian government has long been concerned about how such games are addictive. India's IT ministry, which has drafted the bill, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. MPL and Dream11 declined to comment. In fantasy cricket games on Dream11, users create their teams by paying as little as 8 rupees (10 U.S. cents), with a total prize pool of 1.2 million Indian rupees ($14,000). The apps become more popular during the Indian Premier League season, one of the world's most popular cricket tournaments. The bill states that anyone who offers such money games could face a jail term of up to three years and a fine. "Such games often use manipulative design features, addictive algorithms ... while promoting compulsive behaviour leading to financial ruin," the bill said. The Senegal international had opened the scoring for his team before being sent off just before halftime. Al Nassr faced Al-Ittihad in this first semi-final of the 2025 Saudi Super Cup, hosted in Hong Kong from August 19 to 23. This clash between two Saudi football giants delivered plenty of drama, featuring a showdown between Sadio Mané and Cristiano Ronaldo against Karim Benzema, although the latter did not start the match. Sadio Mané opens the scoring and kick-starts his season The former Liverpool winger wasted no time putting his side in front in the opening minutes. Set up by Marcelo Brozović, Sadio Mané netted the match's first goal in the 10th minute. In the 25th minute, the Al Nassr forward tried to win back possession in the opponent's half, but his challenge was seen as a dangerous studs-up tackle on an Al-Ittihad defender. The referee wasted no time in reaching for the red card, despite protests from Mané's teammates. This sending-off disrupted the team's balance, who were level with their opponents after Steven Bergwijn's equalizer (16th minute). Down to ten men, the Yellows stood firm under pressure. João Félix restored Al Nassr's lead in the second half (61st minute), capitalizing on some fine work from Cristiano Ronaldo. The Riyadh club held their ground until the final whistle, despite relentless pressure from Al-Ittihad. This victory sends Al Nassr through to the final, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final between Al-Qadsiah and Al-Ahli.
