Police probe hazardous kite string incident in Kepong
City Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, said the case is classified under Section 80 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The provision criminalises placing any road hump, rope, wire, chain, tackle, or similar apparatus across a road in a manner likely to cause danger to persons or damage to vehicles using the road. This is unless a person can prove they had the lawful right to do so and had taken all necessary means to give adequate warning of the danger.
Upon conviction, the perpetrator may be liable to a maximum fine of RM2,000 or to a maximum imprisonment term not exceeding six months, or both.
"Preliminary investigation found that on July 20, 2025, at about 6pm, a 27-year-old victim was riding a motorcycle in the middle of the road when he unknowingly hit a kite string, which got stuck on his body and then his neck before the string broke.
"The victim then stopped on the side of the road and suffered burn-like injuries to his neck," he said in a statement today, adding that the victim also sought medical care at a clinic after the incident.
The victim did not fall off his vehicle during the incident.
Earlier, the New Straits Times reported that a video had been circulating online showing a motorcyclist sustaining neck injuries after riding into a stray kite string.
Under the viral video, social media users voiced concern about the suitability of kite-flying in city areas near roads.

Pas-led rally participants march towards Dataran Merdeka
KUALA LUMPUR: Participants began assembling at Dataran Merdeka this morning for the Pas-led rally, with groups steadily making their way towards the iconic square. At around 11.20am, a crowd gathered along Jalan Tun Perak and started marching in the direction of Dataran Merdeka. Leading the procession was a pick-up truck that doubled as a makeshift stage for speakers addressing the rally. Checks by the New Straits Times (NST) showed that policemen were seen ensuring that participants marched only on the left lane of the road heading towards Dataran Merdeka. They were heard chanting slogans calling for the prime minister to step down. Meanwhile, as of 11.45am, the crowd expected to gather at Central Market — comprising non-governmental organisations (NGOs), youth groups, and social media influencers — had yet to form, with the area remaining relatively quiet. A check by the NST found that police were already on-site earlier in the day to monitor the situation, with the overall atmosphere remaining calm. Many passers-by were seen dressed for a day out, with some heading to nearby shops and attractions at Central Market. The crowd included visitors attending a Tourism Selangor event held at the venue. Separately, checks showed an increased police presence at various public transportation stations. A group of policemen was seen at the Bangsar LRT Station at around 11.45am. A police roadblock was also spotted along Jalan Bangsar, just below the LRT station.

Nurse killed after SUV crashes into her car in Keningau
KENINGAU: A 47-year-old nurse was killed after the car she was driving was rammed by another vehicle at Jalan Patikang, near the Patikang Laut junction, yesterday. In the 4.10pm incident, the victim, Hilen Tingu, who was attached to Keningau Hospital, succumbed to her injuries and died at the scene after her Perodua Axia was struck on the right side by a Toyota Land Cruiser. District police chief Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai said preliminary investigations showed both vehicles were travelling from the Agudon roundabout towards the Bakiau roundabout. "Upon reaching the scene, the victim is believed to have turned right into the Patikang Laut junction when her vehicle was hit from behind by the Toyota Land Cruiser, driven by a 62-year-old man. "The impact caused her car to be dragged to the left shoulder of the road, and she was pinned in the driver's seat," he said when contacted yesterday. He said firefighters extricated the victim from the vehicle, and she was confirmed dead by a medical officer from Keningau Hospital's emergency department. The driver and two passengers of the Toyota Land Cruiser sustained only minor injuries. The body was sent to the hospital's Forensic Unit for a post-mortem. "The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
