One killed, two missing after six swept over Oregon waterfall
Oregon
One person has died and two people remain missing after a group of six people were swept over a waterfall in Oregon on Saturday afternoon, a local sheriff office said.
The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office said it rescued three people from the Deschutes River who were transported to the hospital, while another person was declared dead at the scene.
Emergency responders used drones to look for survivors near Dillon Falls after receiving an emergency call in the afternoon and plan to resume search efforts on Sunday after pausing overnight.
Dillon Falls has a 15-foot (4.5-metre) drop that turns into 'churning rapids in a quick, step ladder-like pattern', according to Visit Central Oregon.
The falls over the Deschutes River are near the city of Bend in the Deschutes National Forest, a popular spot for visitors.
Each summer, thousands of people boat, kayak or float on inner tubes on the river, which boasts whitewater areas as well as trout and salmon fisheries.
Officials have yet to name the victims so they can notify family members before.

Toyota reports a 37% drop in profit, cuts its forecast due to Trump's tariffs
TOKYO (AP) — Toyota's profit plunged 37% in the April-June quarter, the company said Thursday, cutting its full year earnings forecasts largely because of President Donald Trump's tariffs. The Japanese automaker said it based its report on the assumption that Trump's tariffs on exports from Japan, including autos, would be 12.5% starting this month. As of now they stand at 15%. The world's top automaker also makes vehicles in Mexico and Canada. Toyota's profit in the last quarter totaled 841 billion yen, or $5.7 billion, down from 1.33 trillion yen in the same period the year before. Its quarterly sales rose 3%. The status of those exports is unclear since Mexico and Canada are beneficiaries of the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement, renegotiated from a 1990s pact during Trump's first term in office, that eliminated most tariffs and trade barriers between the three countries. Toyota Motor Corp.'s April-June profit totaled 841 billion yen ($5.7 billion), down from 1.33 trillion yen in the same period of 2024. Quarterly sales rose 3% to 12 trillion yen ($82 billion). Toyota said the tariffs cost its quarterly operating profit 450 billion yen ($3 billion). Cost reduction efforts and the negative impact of an unfavorable exchange rate also hurt its bottom line. The company, which makes the Camry sedan and Lexus luxury models, forecast a 2.66 trillion yen ($18 billion) profit for the full fiscal year ending in March 2026, down from an earlier forecast for a 3.1 trillion yen ($21 billion) profit. Toyota earned nearly 4.8 trillion yen in the previous fiscal year. 'Despite a challenging external environment, we have continued to make comprehensive investments, as well as improvements such as increased unit sales, cost reductions and expanded value chain profits,' Toyota said in a statement that outlined its efforts to minimize the impact of the tariffs. At the retail level, Toyota sold 2.4 million vehicles globally, with sales growing in Japan, North America and Europe from the previous year, when global retail totaled 2.2 million vehicles. Analysts say Toyota is likely among the worst hit by the tariffs among global companies, even compared with other Japanese automakers. ___ Yuri Kageyama is on Threads: Sign in to access your portfolio

Offshore wind farm approval hailed as opportunity
Developers have said it is an "important moment" after a floating offshore wind project received full planning consent. White Cross, located 52km off the north Devon coast, will feature six to eight floating wind turbines, capable of powering about 135,000 homes, said developers Flotation Energy and Cobra. The decision to bring the electricity cable from the 100 megawatt project ashore at Saunton Sands sparked significant backlash over environmental damage, disruption to tourism, and increased heavy vehicle traffic. "In response to feedback, we have adapted our plans to minimise environmental and social impacts," said Sam Park, senior project manager. North Devon councillors granted consent for the onshore infrastructure in May, while the Marine Management Organisation issued a Marine Licence for offshore construction on 16 July. Mr Park said: "This is an important moment for the White Cross Offshore Windfarm, and for floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea. "This gives us a valuable opportunity to harness pioneering technology to help deliver the energy transition in the South West." The windfarm's cables will land at Saunton Sands and run underground for five miles (8km) to a new substation near East Yelland. The company said "advanced trenchless technology" will be used to avoid surface disruption in sensitive ecological areas such as Braunton Burrows Special Area of Conservation and the Taw-Torridge Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest. Work is expected to start on the cabling in 2027 and the wind farm in 2028, according the developers.
