Cycling great Vos wins 1st stage of women's Tour de France with brilliant late attack
The 38-year-old Dutchwoman overtook her Visma–Lease a Bike teammate Pauline Ferrand-Prévot approaching the line, and then held off Mauritian rider Kim Le Court in the closing meters of a grueling uphill finish.
Ferrand-Prévot looked set to win the stage, but the Frenchwoman attacked too early from 600 meters and could not withstand the late surge from Vos, who punched the air with her left fist as she crossed the line.
Moments later, Vos hugged an exhausted-looking Ferrand-Prévot, the Paris-Roubaix winner.
'I didn't now if Pauline was still hanging in the finish, but in the end I sprinted a bit with Kim,' Vos said, praising her teammate's effort. 'I'm really grateful to the team and to Pauline.'
The hilly 78.8-kilometer (48.9-mile) route from Vannes to Plumelec in Brittany featured two small climbs and was completed in 1 hour, 53 minutes, 3 seconds by Vos — a multiple world champion, a former Olympic road race champion and a silver medalist at last year's Paris Games.
Former Olympic time-trial silver medalist Marlen Reusser was one of 10 riders to crash some 30 kilometers from the end. She continued for a while but was clearly struggling and had to abandon the stage.
Sunday's second stage from the port city of Brest to Quimper stays in Brittany and is slightly more hilly and longer at 110.4 kilometers.
The nine-stage race, which ends Aug. 3, began a day before the end of the men's Tour, set to be won for a fourth time by Slovenian star Tadej Pogačar by a comfortable margin.
The women's race could be far closer.
Last year provided the smallest winning margin in the history of the women's and men's races, with Polish rider Kasia Niewiadoma beating 2023 champion Demi Vollering by four seconds, and Pauliena Rooijakkers only 10 seconds off the pace in third place.

Kobe Bryant will always be remembered as a Lakers legend and one of basketball's all-time greats. But in February 2009 — in the middle of his 13th NBA season — Bryant appeared on the cover of ESPN the Magazine wearing another team's uniform and playing an entirely different sport. Now, more than 16 years later, Barcelona players will be wearing Bryant-inspired uniforms. Revealed Tuesday by Nike and Barca, the team's 2025-26 away kits will feature a number of nods toward the late NBA legend and his famous Mamba Mentality. The colors are variations of the Lakers' purple and gold. A snakeskin pattern is featured on the shorts and portions of the jersey. Bryant's "Kobe Sheath" logo appears prominently, including on the upper right section of the jersey where the Nike Swoosh would normally be placed. "Born from a shared obsession with relentless self-improvement, the partnership brings the Kobe Sheath to professional football for the first time through a collection that captures the dedication and values central to Kobe's legacy and Barça's DNA," Nike said in a press release. Cubs' Ian Happ says he won't need IL stint after fouling a ball off his shin
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ won't require a stint on the injured list after fouling a ball off his shin against the Milwaukee Brewers. Happ wasn't in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale but said he could be available if necessary. X-rays taken on Happ's shin were negative. 'Nothing serious,' Happ said before the game, adding that he did feel 'a little sore and stiff.' The incident occurred Tuesday during the eighth inning of the Cubs' 9-3 loss to the Brewers and caused him to exit the game. Happ also had said Tuesday he felt lightheaded as a result of the pain coming from his shin. 'It was something like, if you feel like you're going to pass out or throw up on the field, you probably shouldn't continue the at bat," Happ said before Wednesday's game. Happ said he generally doesn't wear shin guards when he's at the plate. That likely will change for at least a little bit. 'I don't love the way they feel,' Happ said. 'I don't like the bulkiness of them, so I try not to (wear them). But when I hit right-handed now for a week or two, I'll have one on. And then once it goes away, we'll do it again.' Although Happ avoided a stint on the injured list, the Cubs did make a move Wednesday by calling up catcher Moisés Ballesteros from Triple-A Iowa and designating utilityman Vidal Bruján for assignment. Ballesteros was batting seventh as a designated hitter in the Cubs' lineup Wednesday. 'It was basically just trying to put the best lineup out there today, essentially,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'In moving on from Bruján, moving forward, we're probably going to have to make some other changes to the roster just to get more outfield depth. But for today, it made sense.' Ballesteros, 21, has batted .332 with a .393 on-base percentage, .496 slugging percentage, nine homers, 57 RBIs and four steals in 86 games with Iowa. He went 3 for 18 with three RBIs in five games with Chicago earlier this season. He said that earlier stint in the big leagues taught him to be more patient. 'As much as we want to get out there and do things too perfect, we've just got to stick to what you do and just try not to do too much,' Ballesteros said through an interpreter.
