Essendon forward Harrison Jones says his horrific-looking ankle injury has turned out better than first feared, but it remains to be seen how long he'll be out of action.
Jones, Jordan Ridley (hamstring) and Jade Gresham (adductor) were injured on Thursday night in a costly 9.11 (65) to 9.8 (62) victory for the Bombers over North Melbourne.
The Kangaroos were also left counting the cost, with defender Jackson Archer set to miss some eight weeks with a high grade left hamstring strain.
Jones was taken off on a stretcher and taken to hospital following an awkward landing that put his left ankle at a horror angle.
The 24-year-old was in good spirits when he briefly spoke to the media on Friday to give an update on his situation.
"I'm OK. I got two X-rays last night, no major breaks. It's a lot better than it could have been," Jones told reporters.
"I think I was in shock to be honest. I sort of looked down and saw my foot was the other way.
"I sort of just sat there. It all happened pretty quick."

AFL: Gold Coast's finals campaign hit by unusual round 24 schedule
Gold Coast will be forced to tackle what looms as a maiden finals campaign with a shorter rest than the other seven contenders after the final round fixture confirmed an 'unconventional' finish to the season. The Suns' rescheduled clash with Essendon, which wasn't played in the Opening Round due to the impact of Cyclone Alfred, will be played on the Gold Coast on the Wednesday after the scheduled finish to the regular season. It will come after the Suns have to travel to Adelaide for a Friday night clash with Port Adelaide and means Gold Coast will prepare for its first finals tilt with a shorter pre-finals break than the other seven finalists. 'While it's unconventional, we're looking forward to rounding out what has already been a historic home-and-away season for the club here at People First Stadium on a Wednesday night,' Suns chief executive Mark Evans said. While Essendon coach Brad Scott on Tuesday said he was reluctant to send players into the off-season early, his injury-plagued group will need to play two games in six days. The two matches that are poised to shape the eight will be played on the Sunday, with Western Bulldogs hosting Fremantle and Brisbane welcoming Hawthorn. The Bulldogs and Dockers could be playing for a spot in the eight, while the Hawks' upcoming fortnight will decide the importance of their bout with the Lions. The Saturday features a trio of games that won't shape the eight, but the Geelong-Richmond match could determine star Cat Jeremy Cameron's pursuit of 100 goals. 'Round 24 is set to deliver an exciting finish to the home-and-away season, with several matches likely to influence the final eight,' AFL head of strategy and scheduling Josh Bowler said. 'The round will start on Thursday night and finish the following Wednesday to provide the Gold Coast Suns and Essendon sufficient days' break between matches, with their rescheduled Opening Round match being played during round 24 in addition to their respective clashes against Carlton and Port Adelaide. 'To avoid a clash between the Western Bulldogs' round 24 AFL match and their round 2 AFLW match, we have also adjusted the start time of the AFLW match between Richmond and the Western Bulldogs on Sunday, 24 August, and subsequently the AFLW match between Essendon and the West Coast Eagles. 'The revised start times give Bulldogs fans the opportunity to watch both their club's teams play on the same day, and we thank everyone involved in working through these changes.' AFL 2025: West Coast Eagles young gun Elijah Hewett delivers ultimatum
West Coast Eagles youngster Elijah Hewett is calling for greater accountability and selection pressure on those unwilling to compete. Hewett has been one of the Eagles' rare positives in their otherwise poor, one-win season. But after another big loss to Melbourne on Saturday, a visibly dejected Hewett offered an honest review of West Coast's effort. 'If you're not competing and don't want to win, then you can't really play for this side. We've got to hold each other accountable during the week,' he said. 'We've got the opportunity to be a part of something great and nothing is more fulfilling to me than a team bottom of the ladder working its way to the top. 'I've been put in a special position to play for the team I have loved growing up and taking it to the top with teammates I love. 'It starts off right now with the game review, figuring out what went wrong and what went right. I think what went wrong today was a bit of intent, a bit of role stuff, execution. We've got to figure it out. 'We've got to be stronger at the ball. There was too many times we pulled up and didn't put our head over the footy. We've got to figure that out and be tougher.' Hewett, 21, has played in just four wins across his 31-game career. He says the pain of this year, with just the solitary win against St Kilda, has cut the group deep. 'Just not getting wins, you play footy to win, you don't play footy to play,' he said. 'There's only so long you can kind of keep going without getting a win. It's just good to fuel momentum at least getting a win on the board. 'We've had one the whole season, so it's been really tough. We've got to stay locked in and find the positives week to week. 'They (the Eagles young players) are incredibly invested … it's quite emotional to be honest, quite upsetting not getting the results we want, but we'll stick fat. 'Guys have the right intent, they want to get better, I can trust that.'
