Standouts on and off field: 3 finalists for Indianapolis City Male Athlete of the Year

The Marion County Athletic Association will soon name its City and County Athletes of the Year, an award that dates to 1950 and grew to include girls' achievements in 1979.
The awards are geared toward athletic achievement, but almost every winner over the years has exhibited impressive credentials in and out of their athletic, academic and personal areas. Generally, multi-sport athletes are given consideration over single-sport athletes, though in some cases a single-sport athlete has been so outstanding that he or she has been selected as the winner.
Here are the three finalists for City Male Athlete of the Year (Bishop Chatard's Sam Feeney won last year):

LSU football injury update: Kelly talks status of transfer cornerback Ja'Keem Jackson

LSU football head coach Brian Kelly gave an update on the injury status of cornerback Ja'Keem Jackson during fall camp. 'He had a slight hamstring, probably a grade one," Kelly said. "So we wanted to be certain that when we brought him back in that we didn't have any reoccurrences.' Holding Jackson out of practice at this point seems precautionary. Ahead of a crucial year for the junior, the Tigers are ensuring he's at full strength before he returns to full speed work and preparations for the week one game at Clemson. Jackson joined LSU as part of the nation's highest-ranked transfer portal class in 2025. His decision to come to Baton Rouge marked a reunion with defensive back coach Corey Raymond, who coached Jackson at Florida. Through two seasons with the Gators, Jackson played 13 games with 11 tackles, four pass breakups and one quarterback hurry. He started the season opener last year but suffered a season-ending ankle injury just two games in. According to the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings, Jackson was the No. 11-ranked cornerback in the signing class. Jackson will certainly be a part of LSU's cornerback rotation, which has improved depth in 2025 and should be the best secondary of the Brian Kelly era.

Tigers' A.J. Hinch makes scathing comments on Tommy Kahnle's struggles

Tigers' A.J. Hinch makes scathing comments on Tommy Kahnle's struggles originally appeared on The Sporting News The Detroit Tigers have been floundering a bit over the last month of baseball. After the All-Star break, the Tigers' lead in the AL Central has dropped to just 6.5 games over the Cleveland Guardians. While things have been a bit better as of late, with back-to-back series wins over the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Angels, there's one player whose struggles have led to a few of the team's losses during their rough last month. Evan Woodberry of MLive Media Group shared comments from Tigers manager A.J. Hinch on the struggles of Tommy Kahnle in recent weeks. Hinch's comments were scathing, and he didn't hold back in criticizing the veteran reliever. "He doesn't get to pitch for free," Hinch said of Kahnle. "The situation is going to dictate whether the innings are there for him. We try to get him in as low-leverage or low-pressure situations as possible so he can work on things... But we've got to compete on the field. This is not practice." It's a brutal string of comments from Hinch on Kahnle. The 36-year-old right-hander started off the year strong, but has cratered in recent outings. Through June, across 34 games, he had a 1.77 ERA, eight saves, 11 holds, and allowed four home runs while striking out 31 and walking nine. His beginning of the year was great, but across the next 15 outings, he's been significantly worse. In less than half the outings he had to begin the year, he's allowed four home runs, walked 13, struck out just eight, and has an ERA of 16.36. While the comments from Hinch are brutal for Kahnle, based on his performance, it's not unwarranted. Kahnle has been one of the worst relievers in baseball since the beginning of July, and his season ERA jumped up to 5.27 after such a brutal stretch. There could be a reason behind his struggles this season: his usage. He's pitched 46.2 innings this season, which is the most he's pitched since 2019 with the New York Yankees. MORE: Tigers top prospects could be impacted by $130 million Roman Anthony Red Sox contract With a month and a half of the 2025 season left, he's already pitched the fourth-most innings he has in a season in his career. Combined with his age, the Tigers reliever could be burnt out. The 11-year veteran might not be in his best shape come the postseason if he continues to pitch. Instead of trotting him out there, the Tigers should find a way to dramatically limit his innings. When he's on, he's a very solid reliever. But his struggles lately are too much, as Hinch's comments indicate he's just about done experimenting with Kahnle. The veteran reliever's struggles are too detrimental, and the Tigers could pivot in another direction. It's a tough decision, especially after how great he was to begin the year. But, based on Hinch's comments, Kahnle is on thin ice in Detroit and could see his time with the team come to an end soon. New signings star in Man City opening win and Richarlison shines for Tottenham

Tijjani Reijnders and Erling Haaland starred as Manchester City opened its Premier League campaign by crushing Wolverhampton 4-0 on Saturday. On a great day for City's new signings, Reijnders played a part in the first three goals — scoring one himself — and Rayan Cherki came off the bench to grab a late fourth. Coach Pep Guardiola made Reijnders a priority signing from AC Milan to compensate for playmaker Kevin De Bruyne's departure. He also snapped up the technically gifted Cherki from Lyon, where he made his debut at the age of 16. Reijnders prised the Wolves defense open with a delightful flick over the defense to allow Rico Lewis the space to pick out Haaland to score his first from a low cross in the 34th minute. Three minutes later, Oscar Bobb played Reijnders in down the left and the Netherlands midfielder arrowed a superb first-time shot into the bottom right corner from just inside the penalty area. City's third in the 61st came when Reijnders expertly took down a high ball, swapped passes with Bobb down the right and pulled the ball back for Haaland to finish with a crisp drive. Just six minutes after going on, France international Cherki bamboozled the Wolves defense and picked his spot from 20 meters out. Elsewhere, Newcastle lacked a cutting edge without its star striker Alexander Isak and drew at Aston Villa 0-0. Tottenham looked far sharper, dispatching newly promoted Burnley 3-0 with Brazil forward Richarlison scoring twice. Isak was left out as he tries to push for a move to defending champion Liverpool. New signing Anthony Elanga looked dangerous on the right of Newcastle's attack, but the visitors could not make the most of their possession. Villa's Ezri Konsa was sent off in the 66th minute for pulling back Anthony Gordon as he raced through on goal. West Ham lost at promoted Sunderland 3-0, and Fulham equalized deep into stoppage time for 1-1 at Brighton. Mohammed Kudus set up Richarlison from the right flank for both of his goals, the second of which was an exquisite scissor kick in the 60th. Brennan Johnson latched onto Pape Sarr's pass shortly after to make it 3-0 for Europa League winner Tottenham, which lost midweek to Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. Forward Eliezer Mayenda and center half Dan Ballard scored with headers in the second half for Sunderland before Wilson Isidor sealed the win with an injury-time goal. Matt O'Riley's penalty early in the second half for Brighton punished a foul by Fulham's Sander Berge on Georginio Rutter as he ran into the penalty box. But Brighton failed to deal with a corner and Rodrigo Muniz fired in the equalizer in the sixth minute of injury time. A moment's silence was observed at those Premier League games in memory of the former Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Diogo Jota. Before facing City, Wolves fans displayed a giant tifo of Jota, who played two seasons in the Premier League with the West Midlands club before joining Liverpool in 2020. A banner under the tifo in his memory read 'We'll remember you when you walk in fields of gold,' and fans at Molineux Stadium chanted his name after a moment's applause was held while a Portuguese flag was flown. They chanted his name again in the 18th minute, in reference to the jersey number he wore at Wolves. On Friday, Liverpool players and fans paid moving tributes to Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, at Anfield before and during the league-opener against Bournemouth. The Portuguese brothers died in a car crash in Spain last month.
