Prototype jet breaches sound barrier in historic flight
A test aircraft built by Boom Supersonic, a US start-up, has broken the sound barrier for the first time during a flight over California's Mojave Desert, potentially ushering in a new era of faster air travel, the company said in a statement.
Boom Supersonic's XB-1 jet became the first privately developed aircraft to reach Mach 1.1 (approximately 770mph or 1,240kph) on Tuesday.
The aircraft, flown by chief test pilot Tristan 'Geppetto' Brandenburg, achieved supersonic speeds three times during the flight. Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom Supersonic, called the event
'a big day for all of us, for America, for aviation, and for human progress.'
'XB-1's supersonic flight demonstrates that the technology for passenger supersonic flight has arrived,'
Boom stated.

Scholl added.
The test flight occurred in the same airspace where, in 1947, US Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier, flying the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft at Mach 1.05 at an altitude of 45,000 feet.
The achievement is seen as a major step toward the development of Boom's commercial passenger aircraft, the Overture. Designed to carry up to 80 passengers, it is expected to fly at twice the speed of today's subsonic airliners, according to Boom.
Boom Supersonic has already secured 130 orders for the Overture from major airlines, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines.
The Overture is poised to be the first large commercial aircraft designed for net-zero carbon emissions, operating on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Despite this advancement, supersonic planes like the Overture face challenges such as high fuel consumption and sonic booms, which limit their ability to reach supersonic speeds over populated areas.

The XB-1's milestone marks the first time a civil aircraft has gone supersonic over the continental United States since the Concorde's retirement.
The Concorde was a groundbreaking supersonic passenger airliner developed jointly by Britain and France. It made its first flight on March 2, 1969, and entered commercial service in 1976.
Capable of cruising at over twice the speed of sound (Mach 2.04) at altitudes up to 60,000 feet, it significantly reduced transatlantic travel times, flying from London to New York in about three hours. However, due to high operational costs, low passenger numbers, and a fatal accident in 2000, the Concorde was retired in 2003.

US approves F-16 support package for Ukraine
The US has approved a $310.5 million deal to sustain Ukrainian-operated F-16 fighter jets provided by Kiev's European backers. In 2024, Ukraine reported the loss of another F-16, saying it crashed while repelling a Russian air strike. The DSCA announcement comes after the Pentagon said it is sending 'disused and completely non-operational F-16s to Ukraine for parts.' US and India finalize terms for trade talks
US Vice President J.D. Vance has announced that the US and India have agreed on terms for bilateral trade negotiations, calling it a roadmap to a final deal. Vance is currently in India, where he has held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other key officials. South Korean car giant registers multiple new patents in Russia
South Korean auto giant Hyundai has registered at least eight new trademarks with Russia's intellectual property service, Rospatent, this month, according to TASS. Hyundai suspended operations in Russia in March 2022 after the introduction of sanctions against Moscow, related to the Ukraine conflict. The manufacturer cited the resulting difficulties with parts supplies as the reason for its decision. The filings suggest that Hyundai could be preparing for a return to the Russian market. The new trademarks grant the company the right to manufacture and sell a wide array of vehicles in Russia, from passenger cars to buses, tractors, and heavy trucks. The registration also covers key auto components, including tires, shock absorbers, engines, and wheels. The registered patents reportedly include a range of models, such as Hyundai H-1, N Performance, N Line, Hyundai Axis, Ellecity, Xcient, Hyundai H100, and Hyundai Coupe. The variety of names points to potential activity across both commercial and passenger segments, including performance and luxury sub-brands. The rights to use the Hyundai trademarks in Russia will remain valid until 2034, according to the filings. A similar move was previously made by another South Korean automaker, Kia, which has filed at least six trademark applications with Rospatent. Hyundai and its affiliate Kia, once among the three best-selling car brands in Russia, joined a mass international corporate withdrawal amid Western pressure and Ukraine-related sanctions on Moscow. Hyundai Motor Group sold 100% of its Russian assets, including its St. Petersburg plant, for a symbolic 10,000 rubles ($123), while securing a buyback option valid for two years. It means the group must make a decision on restarting production at the facility before the end of 2025. Other major foreign brands have also been positioning themselves for potential reentry and asset reacquisition in Russia. Last month, LG Electronics confirmed it has resumed operations at its home appliance plant in Moscow, which produced washing machines and refrigerators. Italian household appliance manufacturer Ariston also recently announced its return to Russia after exiting the market in 2022.
