US and India finalize terms for trade talks
US Vice President J.D. Vance has announced that the US and India have agreed on terms for bilateral trade negotiations, calling it a roadmap to a final deal.
Vance is currently in India, where he has held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other key officials. Washington and New Delhi aim to substantially increase bilateral trade, with a goal of exceeding $500 billion by the end of the decade. The target was announced by President Donald Trump and Modi during the latter's visit to the US in February.
'I believe this is a vital step toward realizing President [Donald] Trump's and Prime Minister Modi's vision, because it sets a road map toward a final deal between our nations,' Vance said on Tuesday in the city of Jaipur.
The US also wants a deeper defense partnership with the South Asian power, the vice president stated, including co-production of munitions and equipment such as javelins and striker combat vehicles.
'We want to work together more. And we want your nation to buy more of our military equipment, which, of course, we believe is the best in class. American fifth generation F-35s, for example, would give the Indian Air Force the ability to defend your airspace,' Vance said.
When Modi came to the White House earlier this year, Trump noted that the US would like to increase weapons sales to India, and would eventually offer it its F-35 fighter jets.
He made the statement days after the F-35 faced off against Russia's Su-57 fighter at India's largest air show, Aero India, in Bangalore. Moscow presented the Su-57 in India for the first time, sparking intense interest from experts and the general public, according to Indian media reports.
Defense analysts say that the Su-57 boasts a number of advantages, including cost and opportunities for technology transfer for the Indian Air Force, which has relied on Russian systems for decades.
Vance also said the US wants to 'help India explore its own considerable natural resources,' including offshore natural gas and critical mineral supplies. During Modi's February US visit, Trump suggested that an easy way to balance trade would be to increase US exports of oil and gas to India – something Washington sees as a means of reducing New Delhi's reliance on Russian oil, as well as gas imports from the Middle East.

Modi inaugurates world's highest rail bridge in Kashmir (VIDEO)
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated two railway bridges that are a part of a new link connecting the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country. It is the first time he has been to the region since the deadly Pahalgam attack on tourists, which triggered a diplomatic and military clash between New Delhi and Islamabad. During his speech on Friday, Modi highlighted the importance of developing Kashmir's infrastructure. The region has been a point of contention between India and Pakistan for decades. The prime minister opened the Chenab bridge – labeled by Indian authorities the world's highest railway bridge – and Anji bridge, India's first cable-stayed rail bridge. Both are parts of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Line project, a 272-kilometer long railway link that Modi hailed as Jammu and Kashmir's 'new strength' and a 'testament to India's growing capabilities.' The Chenab bridge, built over the river of the same name, towers 359 meters above the riverbed and rises 35 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower. It was constructed at an estimated cost of approximately $173 million, according to the official statement. The Anji bridge, a cable-stayed railway bridge constructed in a difficult Himalayan terrain, is 331 meters high and is anchored by 96 high tensile cables. The total length of the cables used in the bridge is 653 kilometers, the statement noted. ⚡️PM Modi Waves the 🇮🇳 Tricolour to Inaugurate World's Highest Rail Bridge in J&KThe marvel of engineering that is the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link is built across 943 bridges and through 36 major tunnels - covering 90% of the journey. That includes the Chenab Bridge… the vision of # Chenab Bridge is the world's highest railway arch bridge will give a boost to socio-economic development of the J&K region while improving its connectivity with other parts of #BemisaalBharat. Modi also announced new trains would run between Jammu's capital Srinagar, and Katra, where Vaishno Devi temple, one of the most visited and revered Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, is located. It marks the completion of a 42-year-old project to link Kashmir with the rest of the country via railway. A test run on his route was carried out by the railway authorities in December last year. At the majestic Anji Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir. The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link running through the rugged Himalayas was built at a cost of nearly $5 billion. It includes 36 tunnels spanning 119 kilometers and 943 bridges that allow travel through valleys and mountain passes by train, while previously connectivity in the region was only possible using dangerous roads or by air. The dedication of the rail link 'marks a new chapter in mobility, trade and tourism for Jammu and Kashmir,' New Delhi said.

AI CEO issues stark warning
Artificial intelligence could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within the next five years, the CEO of American AI research company Anthropic, Dario Amodei has warned. In a statement to Axios published on Wednesday, Amodei, who co-founded Anthropic and is a former OpenAI executive, said he hopes to jolt the US government and fellow developers into preparing for the consequences of rapid automation. AI could spike unemployment in the US to 10-20% in the next one to five years, he warned. AI development companies are already working on systems that could soon replace workers in technology, finance, law, consulting and other white-collar professions, particularly entry-level positions, Amodei claimed. The public and politicians are still 'unaware' that a major shift is about to happen and insisted that companies and officials needed to stop 'sugar-coating' what lies ahead, particularly for younger workers. Earlier this month, a report by the Linux Foundation, commissioned by Meta, found that open source AI is already transforming the economy by boosting efficiency, innovation, cost savings, and revenue gains. However, Amodei has expressed concern that people could continue to stay ignorant of the threat of being replaced by AI, especially if the US government chooses to stay silent on the issue out of fear of spooking workers or falling behind China. Soon, 'almost overnight,' business leaders will see savings in replacing humans with AI and implement a change 'en masse.' They will stop opening new jobs or backfilling existing ones, and replace human workers with automated alternatives, Amodei claimed. He has proposed several mitigation strategies, including a special index to track AI's impact across occupations, and briefings for lawmakers to raise awareness. He also suggested a 'token tax' — a system where a percentage of AI-generated revenue would be redistributed by the government. Amodei's warning comes as a number of major companies have recently started laying off a considerable amount of workers, which some believe is being done in anticipation of major shifts due to AI. Earlier this month, Microsoft fired some 6,000 workers, mostly engineers, despite reporting strong sales and profits. Walmart has cut 1,500 corporate jobs to 'simplify operations' while Crowdstrike - a Texas based cybersecurity company - has slashed 500 positions citing 'a market and technology inflection point, with AI reshaping every industry.'

India clears way for own fifth-generation fighter jet
Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the 'execution model' for developing an Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) with an investment of $175 million. The Aeronautical Development Agency will spearhead the program through industry partnerships, according to a government statement on Tuesday. AMCA is the South Asian country's ambitious project to develop a multi-role combat aircraft with stealth capabilities for the Indian Air Force and Navy. In the development of the project, equal opportunities are being offered to both private and public sectors on a competitive basis, according to the Defense Ministry. Participants can bid independently, as joint ventures, or as part of a consortium. This marks a significant departure from the traditional practice of awarding advanced military R&D projects exclusively to state-owned agencies. The AMCA is a single-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, multi-role stealth fighter designed to perform a wide array of missions, including achieving air superiority, carrying out ground strikes, suppressing enemy air defenses, and waging electronic warfare. The fighter jet program received in-principle clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, last year. Modi has made indigenous arms production one of his administration's core goals. India's state-backed Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) plans to roll out the first prototype of the AMCA by 2027. The prototypes will then undergo developmental and weapon trials, with mass production expected to start by 2035. The Indian Air Force intends to buy at least 125 AMCAs in two different configurations, officials stated earlier. The announcement comes against the backdrop of a military stand-off between India and Pakistan earlier this month, which tested the Indian military's combat aircraft capabilities. New Delhi used both foreign weapons, including warplanes and other systems of Russian and French origin, as well as domestically developed ones, against Pakistan. India's Air Force has long relied on Russian-designed warplanes, including the Su-30MKI and MiG-29 fighter jets. India has manufactured the Su-30MKI since 2004 under a Russian license. State-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has manufactured over 220 of these aircraft, which are considered the backbone of the Indian Air Force's fighter fleet. Earlier this year, Russia also showcased its Sukhoi Su-57 Felon stealth fighter, which made its debut at India's largest defense show, Aero India. The US displayed its F-35 at the same event. Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport suggested that, given the existing collaboration between Moscow and New Delhi, India could quickly upgrade its current production lines of Russian-designed fighter jets to assemble fifth-generation warplanes. Rosoboronexport previously stated that it had offered India the option of manufacturing export versions of the Su-57 domestically, if India agreed to import the jet. Experts, however, believe that India is more likely to pursue development of a fifth-generation fighter indigenously.
