F1: Piastri out to boost title bid in Budapest, scene of first win

Khaleej Times2 days ago
Oscar Piastri returns to the scene of his first victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend seeking to stretch his lead in the title race over his McLaren teammate Lando Norris.
The 24-year-old Australian, with six wins from 13 races this year, has a 16-point lead over Norris, but he is well aware of the potential pitfalls ahead.
"I'm looking forward to going back to where I had my first win," said Piastri.
"It's a great city and a cool track and a fun weekend so it will be nice, but once we are in the cars and out on track all that will be forgotten."
His victory last year came with the help of team orders.
Having taken the lead from pole-sitter Norris at the start he fell behind during the pit-stops.
McLaren asked Norris to give him the position back, gifting him his maiden triumph in a manner that left the Briton feeling mistreated.
This time, Norris is out to ensure he wins for himself to trim Piastri's advantage.
Second in Belgium where Piastri passed him following a rolling start on a drying rain-affected track, Norris has been less consistent than the metronomic Melburnian.
His slightest errors have been highlighted while the measured Piastri rarely makes mistakes.
A similar scenario is not impossible this weekend with McLaren dominant after taking 10 wins and targeting their 200th win before Formula One takes its summer break.
After the rainstorms in the Ardennes forest at high-speed Spa-Francorchamps, the Hungaroring circuit 25km north of the capital represents a very different challenge – a sinuous and slow track with one straight dubbed "Monaco without the barriers".
'One to forget'
It also offers very different weather with very warm and sunny conditions expected, although there are thunderstorms threatening, making it a twisting and technical challenge for teams and drivers.
The race joined the world championship calendar in 1986 when travelling behind the Iron Curtain into eastern Europe was still considered adventurous, but the first sole nominated Hungarian Grand Prix was held 50 years earlier in Nepliget, a Budapest park.
Ferrari's seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, in urgent need of a good weekend with a podium finish after "one to forget" as he described his Belgian experience, has won a record eight times at the Hungaroring and also taken a record nine poles.
This could be his chance to secure a first Ferrari podium and lift some of the pressure on the Maranello team.
But the track has a reputation for throwing up surprise winners, often maiden triumphs, and is fondly remembered also by two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin who was 22 when he became then the youngest driver to take pole and win a Grand Prix in 2003.
He followed that by taking the drivers' title two years later to become the sport's then-youngest world champion at a venue where Briton Nigel Mansell also clinched the title in 1992.
This weekend's contest will be Alonso's record 22nd in Hungary.
Four-time champion Max Verstappen is set to start his 200th race for Red Bull.
The Dutchman won in 2022 and 2023, but is no longer enjoying imperious superiority with Laurent Mekies at the helm for the second race weekend following the sacking of Christian Horner.

Charles Leclerc secures Ferrari's first pole position of season at Hungarian GP

Charles Leclerc handed Ferrari pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix with McLaren's Formula One leader Oscar Piastri alongside on the front row. McLaren's Lando Norris, Piastri's closest title rival, qualified third with George Russell lining up fourth for Mercedes. The pole was Ferrari's first in a Grand Prix in 14 rounds this season. Leclerc punched the air in delight as he climbed out of the car after beating Piastri by 0.026 seconds and the other McLaren of Norris by .041s. Leclerc had consistently been the best of the rest behind the McLarens in practice but remained well off Piastri and Norris' pace. That changed in qualifying, with the help of gloomy, windy conditions that worked against the McLarens. Still, pole came as a shock. 'What?' Leclerc exclaimed over the radio when he was told he had qualified first. The Monegasque driver later said: 'Today, I don't understand anything in Formula One. Honestly, the whole qualifying was extremely difficult. When I say extremely difficult, it's not exaggerating. 'It was difficult for us to get to Q2, it was difficult for us to get to Q3. In Q3, the conditions changed a little bit. Everything became a lot trickier, and I knew I just had to do a clean lap to target third. 'At the end of the day, it's pole position. I definitely did not expect that. Honestly, I have no words. It's probably one of the best pole positions I've ever had. It's the most unexpected, for sure.' It was in stark contrast to yet another frustrating day for Lewis Hamilton in the other Ferrari. Hamilton has won the Hungarian Grand Prix a record eight times but qualified 12th as the seven-time champion's troubles in his first season with Ferrari continued. 'Every time, every time,' Hamilton told the team over the radio after he qualified outside the top 10 for the second straight race. Defending champion Max Verstappen was only eighth after struggling with the balance of his Red Bull, and his teammate Yuki Tsunoda was 16th. That piles more pressure on the Japanese driver, who hasn't scored a point in six races. Hamilton's replacement at Mercedes, teenager Kimi Antonelli, has only scored once in his last seven appearances and he too failed to make it out of Q2, qualifying 15th. Aston Martin have been woefully out of sorts this year and are eighth in the constructors' standings. Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll failed to make it out of Q1 at the previous round. However, Alonso – who turned 44 earlier this week – and Stroll progressed to the final phase on Saturday, and will start fifth and sixth respectively. Alex Albon has enjoyed a strong season – he finished sixth last weekend – but he will line up from the back of the pack here after qualifying 20th and last.

Ferrari's Leclerc on pole for Hungarian GP

McLaren's Lando Norris will start from the second row alongside fellow Briton George Russell, who was fourth for Mercedes."I honestly have no words, it's probably one of the best pole positions I've ever had because it's the most unexpected for sure," said 27-year-old went late in the final minutes of a closely-contested session to clock a best lap in one minute and 15.372 seconds in changing conditions, leaving his rivals frustrated as they failed to improve on their first run took pole by 0.026 seconds ahead of series leader Piastri and by 0.041 seconds ahead of the Australian's team-mate and title rival Norris, with Russell 0.053 seconds adrift in a breathtakingly close finish. It was Leclerc's first pole of the year, his first in Budapest and the 27th of his career. It was Ferrari's first pole in Hungary since Sebastian Vettel in 2017. "The whole qualifying has been extremely difficult, and when I say that I'm not exaggerating," said Leclerc of the windy conditions at the Hungaroring."It was super difficult for us to get to Q2 and Q3. McLaren's Norris completes ‘double top' at Hungarian GP practice

Lando Norris completed a commanding 'double top' on Friday with the fastest times ahead of McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The 25-year-old Briton, who is 16 points behind Piastri in the drivers' title race, clocked a best lap in one minute and 15.624 seconds to outpace the Australian by 0.291 seconds after a tense second session at the Hungaroring circuit. Charles Leclerc was third for Ferrari, adrift by nearly four-tenths, ahead of the Aston Martins of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso, and Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari. George Russell was seventh for Mercedes ahead of Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar, Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull and Kimi Antonelli in the second Mercedes. All this left four-time champion Max Verstappen, grumbling throughout about his car's poor balance and performance, down in 14th place, 1.167 seconds off the pace and three tenths adrift of his team-mate. Lando Norris of Britain prepares for the second free practice. AP To make matters worse for the Dutchman, who described his car as 'undriveable', he faced a likely investigation into his disposal of a cloth towel from his cockpit during the session. From the start, it was clear that the duelling McLaren title protagonists were in no mood to take the session lightly as they traded best laps and, in a final late incident, ran close to making contact as Norris locked up and Piastri swept past him around Turn One. On a bright, dry afternoon, Nico Hulkenberg - who had missed the first session to give reserve driver Paul Aron an outing for Sauber - was first out and within five minutes ran wide and scattered gravel across the track. As Norris and Piastri dominated, endorsing the clear impression that a McLaren intra-team duel was in prospect for Sunday's race, Verstappen was down in 10th, adrift by a second, and reported, when asked about his car's balance, that it was like 'driving on ice'. His teammate Tsunoda was a tenth faster in ninth. Verstappen's pedestrian session was punctuated by an unusual late incident when he was filmed throwing a cloth, or towel, from his cockpit. He was expected to face a stewards' investigation. Lando Norris steers during the second practice in Mogyorod. AFP And showing signs that he was feeling the pressure, Norris endured 'a moment' when he slid wide on the grass at the final corner and recovered with 15 minutes remaining on used softs. Like Piastri, the winner here 12 months ago, he switched back to mediums signalling the fight for fastest lap was over. Piastri has developed into a genuine title contender over the last year. 'I have a lot of confidence in myself that I can do it,' the Australian said of his title chances Thursday. 'The pace in the last few weekends, especially (Belgium), I've been very confident in and very proud of. I'm more than capable of continuing that for the rest of the year.' McLaren can reach some milestones this weekend, with a potential 200th win in F1 for the team. It could also be Piastri and Norris' fourth one-two finish in a row, a feat McLaren last managed in 1988. Piastri took the win last year in Hungary, but only after McLaren had to plead over the radio with Norris to 'do the right thing' and let Piastri past, something the British driver was reluctant to do. Piastri had been leading but McLaren's pit strategy - which would normally favor the leader - had put Norris ahead. Piastri thinks the team can still take positives from that situation. 'I think it underlined the good nature in the team. It was obviously a slightly awkward situation, but it highlighted that we will do the right thing in all circumstances -- well, ideally all circumstances -- when we're on track,' Piastri said.
