The Cincinnati Bengals paid top dollar and then some to maintain their elite wide receiver tandem. They signed Ja'Marr Chase to a record deal for a non quarterback while securing Tee Higgins with his own handsome deal.

These contracts kept Higgins off the free agent market and prevented any future contract conflict with Chase. However, they have come at a cost elsewhere on the roster.
Monday, the latest of these cap casualties came through the wire as the Bengals released veteran linebacker Germaine Pratt. Pratt posted some impressive numbers but struggled considerably last season on a porous Cincinnati defense.
The move costs the team $2.3 million in dead cap but adds roughly $5.8 million in cap space.
The decision puts Pratt in a tough position, now searching for a new team late in the offseason after many of the initial roster decisions have been made. As a result, Bengals reporter Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic sounded off on the decision with a post to X.
"A move that was inevitable six months ago finally happens. What a ridiculous charade that it took this long.

"Pratt is responsible for one of the most memorable moments in team history and was a centerpiece of great, championship defenses. He deserved better on the way out."
That play came in the 2021 AFC Wild Card when Pratt intercepted Derek Carr to seal a 26-19 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The win marked their first ever playoff victory at Paycor Stadium and is recognized by Bengals fans as one of the most important in franchise history.
Pratt requested a trade back in February though Cincinnati presumably never found a landing spot for the veteran. Now, both sides go their separate ways as Pratt becomes one of the top defenders available and the Bengals return to another aching issue on the defensive side with the ongoing Trey Hendrickson conflict.

Cubs Might Find Shocking Trade Candidate in Orioles' Charlie Morton
Cubs Might Find Shocking Trade Candidate in Orioles' Charlie Morton originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Several names have been tossed around as potential fits for the Chicago Cubs' unsteady rotation: Mitch Keller, Andrew Heaney, Zach Eflin, etc. There are several quality hurlers the Cubs can choose from, but there is another emerging name that has surfaced, a pitcher who has had some stunning recent success. And that pitcher is – Charlie Morton? Let's back up a little. Advertisement At age 41, having pitched 18 years in the Majors and throwing to a laggardly 5.63 ERA for the Baltimore Orioles this year, it would seem Morton is anything but 'emerging.' But none of this tells the full story. According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, Morton is quickly becoming a compelling trade chip. 'Don't look now, but the symbol of the Orioles' early collapse, right-hander Charlie Morton, is emerging as a legitimate trade candidate,' Rosenthal wrote in The Athletic. 'Morton, 41, lost his spot in the rotation after posting a 10.89 ERA in his first five starts. But since returning to the rotation for good on May 26, his ERA in six starts is 2.90. He also has struck out 37 in 31 innings. The biggest concern for a team interested in acquiring Morton might be paying the balance of his $15 million salary. At the deadline, he still would be owed nearly $5 million.' Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer talks to the media after introducing pitcher Shota Imanaga (not pictured) during a press conference at Loews Chicago Hotel. Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Morton may be too far past his prime to post the 3.05 ERA he put up in 2019, but it was only in 2023 when he finished with an ERA of 3.64. He is far from being a risk-free option, but if he can keep up his resurgence, he might be a solid mid-rotation arm once again. Dodgers' Max Muncy Matches a Record Set by Jimmie Foxx in 1938
Dodgers' Max Muncy Matches a Record Set by Jimmie Foxx in 1938 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As of Wednesday, Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy has notched a series of impressive feats that have snowballed into one accomplishment so rare, it has only been done once in an MLB season. While it took a Hall-of-Famer the course of an entire season to do it, Muncy did it in under a month. Advertisement In a post on X, OptaSTATS pointed out that since May 31, Muncy had recorded three games of 6+ RBIs, three multi-home run games, two games with 7+ RBIs, two games with multiple home runs of the 3-run or more variety, and two grand slams. OptaSTATS noted that, 'The only other player in MLB history to do all of that over an entire season was Jimmie Foxx during his 1938 MVP campaign.' Hitting .250/.375/.454 with 12 home runs, chances are Muncy won't be an MVP this year, but since donning prescription eyewear on April 30, we have seen a new Muncy (and not the one with the A's). Prior to his eyesight revelation, Muncy was hitting .180 with no home runs. In the month of June alone, Muncy is hitting .328/.459/.642 with six home runs entering Friday's bout against the Royals. Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy (13) looks on during batting practice before a game against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Aiken-Imagn Images In the blink of a perfectly seeing eye, Muncy's bat exploded, and all trade rumors replacing him have ceased. A hot streak such as this isn't too uncommon for Muncy, who often has experienced hot and cold streaks. Whether he can sustain his torrid pace with his newfound eyesight or not remains to be seen, but every Dodgers fan can truly appreciate the history he has made since the end of May. Bengals risk being only NFL team with 1st-round pick unsigned
Not that the Cincinnati Bengals pay much attention to outside public opinion, but the team is now one of just two franchises yet to sign their first-round pick this year. The Bengals with Shemar Stewart and the Denver Broncos with cornerback Jahdae Barron are the two teams left standing without a signature from their first-round picks. Advertisement Jacksonville shoved the Bengals into this bucket over the weekend by signing Travis Hunter, the No. 2 overall pick. RELATED: Bengals, Shemar Stewart nuclear option includes 2026 NFL draft route The Bengals had to watch as Stewart bashed the organization publicly before leaving minicamp early recently. According to reports, the Bengals want to reset contractual language regarding guarantees, starting with Stewart as the first. The defensive end and his reps, naturally, don't want to be the first. It's hard to imagine the standoff bleeds too far into training camp, but it's equally hard to imagine the Bengals care that they're just one of two teams yet to wrap up what should be nothing more than a minor offseason bit of work.
