Eviction drive Intensifies in Kotkhai: Over 1,220 apple and pear trees felled

Shimla, July 13 (UNI)The court-monitored forest land eviction drive in Kotkhai area of Shimla district in Himachal Pradesh gained further momentum today, with the Special Operation Procedure (SOP) team felling 472 fruit-bearing trees in Village Chaithla of Gram Panchayat Pandali
The eviction drive was undertaken following the Himachal Pradesh High Court's strict directives to remove illegal apple orchards from encroached forest land.
According to official information, the trees belonged to nine individuals who had allegedly encroached upon government forest land and planted commercial orchards.
In today's operation, the SOP team cut down 418 apple trees, 53 pear tree and one peach tree
Officials from the Revenue Department stated that the trees were between 10 to 35 years old, indicating long-term illegal occupation of forest land.
The operation was halted around 4:10 PM due to rainfall. However, the district administration confirmed that law and order remained peaceful throughout the day, and further updates will be communicated as the situation develops.
This action follows Saturday's drive in the same region where 93 apple trees belonging to Dinesh Tajta were removed. 664 apple and pear trees from the land encroached by Pratap Chauhan were cut
Total trees axed in two days now stands at 1,229, comprising of 973 apple tree, 117 pear trees and one peach tree
These evictions are part of the enforcement of the July 2, 2025, High Court order in CWPIL No. 17 of 2024 and CWPIL No. 9 of 2015. The Court had directed the Forest Department to immediately remove all apple orchards from previously encroached forest land across Himachal Pradesh and recover costs from the encroachers as arrears of land revenue. It had also issued bailable warrants against those obstructing the implementation.
The Forest Department and district administration, working under enhanced police security, are pressing forward with the removal despite adverse weather, ensuring compliance with the High Court's order. UNI ML SSP

Punjab & Haryana High Court Acquits Late MLA Om Prakash Hitler's Sons In 30-Year-Old Murder Case

The court set aside the 2004 conviction for the teenager's death. Om Prakash Hitler was an archrival of former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala In a significant judgment, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has acquitted three sons of former Haryana MLA Om Prakash alias 'Om Prakash Hitler" in a 30-year-old murder case, citing serious doubts over the credibility of the prosecution's evidence and the possibility of political vendetta. The division bench comprising Justices Gurvinder Singh Gill and Jasjit Singh Bedi set aside the 2004 conviction of Manoj Kumar Sihag, Sanjay Sihag, and Sandeep Sihag, who were sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly exhorting their father, Om Prakash, to shoot a 13-year-old boy, Jeet Ram, during a wedding celebration in February 1995. The fourth accused, Om Prakash, passed away during the pendency of the appeal. The incident dates back to February 26, 1995, when Jeet Ram, a teenager attending a wedding hosted by Om Prakash Hitler in village Chautala, sustained gunshot injuries and later died. An FIR was promptly registered under Section 304-A IPC for causing death by negligence, based on the victim's father Madan Lal's statement that the death resulted from accidental celebratory firing. An untraced report was accepted by the magistrate in 1996. However, over four years later, Madan Lal moved a fresh application in 1999, alleging that the death was not accidental but a deliberate murder committed by Om Prakash and his sons, following a verbal altercation at the event. This led to a reinvestigation and subsequent framing of murder charges under Sections 302 and 302/109 IPC. In 2004, the Sessions Court convicted all five accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Om Prakash and Darbara Singh, another co-accused, later died during the pendency of the appeal. The High Court expressed serious reservations about the timing and reliability of the prosecution's key witnesses, Duli Chand and Bhajan Lal, who surfaced only in 1999, over four years after the incident. The bench noted that both individuals were politically aligned with then-chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, a political rival of the accused, and had pending or past enmity with Om Prakash Hitler. The court observed that the initial FIR made no mention of any of the present appellants being responsible, and even in later statements, the credibility of witnesses appeared compromised. 'Apparently, the statement of this witness has been procured belatedly at the behest of the investigating agency possibly on account of political interference," the HC remarked. Furthermore, inconsistencies in ballistic evidence and the post-mortem report cast doubt on the prosecution's claim that a licensed .12 bore DBBL gun allegedly used by Om Prakash had caused the fatal injury. The firearm was only entered into the accused's licence record months after the incident. 'The evidence brought on record cannot be said to be of such sterling quality so as to unequivocally point towards the guilt of the accused," the bench ruled, emphasising that the delay in naming and examining key witnesses raised serious concerns about the integrity of the investigation. Setting aside the conviction and sentence passed by the Sessions Court in 2004, the High Court acquitted Manoj Kumar Sihag, Sanjay Sihag, and Sandeep Sihag of all charges. view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 18:27 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina condemns Gopalganj violence, calls it pre-planned conspiracy by NCP-CA Md Yunus

Dhaka, July 17 (UNI) Post the violent clashes in Bangladesh's Gopalganj region between members of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the now-banned Awami League, which led to four AL members getting killed and two dozen injured, in firing by the army and police, ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has slammed the incident, claiming that the attack was a pre-planned conspiracy by Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus and his "mob" gang. Issuing a statement, the former premier called upon the citizens to unite in the spirit of progressive, democratic, modern, and non-communal ideals to "crush the tyranny of murderer-fascist Yunus", 'the godfather of mob terrorism', and to protect Bangladesh, reports Daily Republic. Extending her condolences to the departed, and wishing speedy recovery to the injured, she also expressed her gratitude to the 'brave people of Gopalganj—born of a heroic land—for standing up and resisting Yunus.' The NCP comprises student members who had orchestrated the July-August protests of last year which led to her ouster on August 5, 2024. Accusing the NCP and the Yunus administration of attacking Bengali identity itself, by attacking the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the memorial museum of the 1971 Liberation War, and 'desecrating' the national flag, anthem, and constitution, Hasina accused the two parties of perpetrating widespread 'genocide, police killings, rape, robbery, mugging, and looting.' 'The public enemy, murderer-fascist, anti-national, and patron of terrorism, Yunus — through his mob terrorism and the so-called NCP—has instigated newly emerged militant-terrorists who, following the pattern of August 5, again mobilised under the banner of a so-called 'March to Gopalganj' programme with the intent to demolish the resting place of Bangabandhu in Tungipara, the very heart of Bengali identity,' she added. She further critiqued the NCP and CA Yunus' attack on Mujibism (the tenets of Bangladesh's political identity), and said 'Bangabandhu and Bangladesh are one and inseparable. An attack on either will not go unanswered by the Bengali nation. And today, the people of Gopalganj did not sit silently. In the struggle to protect Bangladesh and Bangabandhu, the brave people of Gopalganj, despite all odds, defied tear gas, bullets, and repression, and defended Bangabandhu's mausoleum. 'The mercenary forces of the murderer-fascist Yunus opened fire indiscriminately on innocent civilians in Gopalganj. In response, several have been martyred by law enforcement gunfire, and countless others have been seriously injured. This despicable terrorism by the state-sponsored forces and goons unleashed by murderer-fascist Yunus surpasses even medieval barbarity. 'I strongly condemn, protest, and denounce this horrific massacre and the state-patronised terrorism,' she said.

Citizen groups release open letter condemning ‘colonial conservation' model in Nagarahole

Several citizen groups came together to release an open letter in front of the Wildlife Conservation Society office in Bengaluru expressing concern regarding the ongoing tensions inside the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve. The letter expressed solidarity with the 52 families of Karadikallu who have been demanding the recognition of their forest rights. The signees of the letter condemned 'the historical violence and threats the communities continue to face in the name of conservation.' They termed the actions of the Forest Department 'deliberate attempts to deny the communities their rights'. 'Anti-people and anti-environment' On June 18, 2025, around 250 Forest Department officials, with the police personnel and armed special tiger task force members, demolished six makeshift huts of the Jenukuruba tribal families in Karadikallu. This was following the re-entry of the tribals into the forests of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve in May 2025 'to reclaim their ancestral land'. The Jenukurubas have been in a long-drawn dispute with the Forest Department officials who, according to them, have repeatedly rejected their claims under the Forest Rights Act. 'Underlying these actions is a model of conservation witnessed in Nagarahole over the past decades, touted nationally and globally as a 'successful model', led by organisations like Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and prominent conservationists Ullas Karanth, Krithi Karanth, late K.M. Chinappa, that is viciously anti-people and anti-environment,' read the letter, which alleged that the model has turned Nagarahole into a militarised conflict zone. 'Fact-finding missions and widespread documentation on media and social media highlight that 'forest conservation' in forests like Nagarahole has come to mean violence, militarisation, persecutional AI-based, and digital surveillance, forced evictions, displacement and deprivation for the tribal and other vulnerable forest communities who have lived and nurtured the forests for centuries,' it further said. 'Criminalising natives' The letter said that several portions of the forest have been replaced by timber plantations, and eco-tourism has been popularised to allow entry of tourists and resorts into the forests, while denying tribals their customary rights. It also noted that the conservation model criminalises local forest communities by terming them 'encroachers'. 'It has been widely documented that what is termed by the WCS and the Forest Department as 'voluntary relocations' is anything but that... while conservationists like Chinnappa seek to minimise human interference in the forest to restore biodiversity, the latest science shows that lands managed by indigenous communities tend to be the most biodiverse, more than areas managed under 'wildlife reserves' or 'protected areas',' it said. The letter has been signed by the representatives of Community Network Against Protected Areas, Fridays For Future, All India Students' Association Karnataka, and Peoples' Union for Civil Liberties, among others.
