Michael Appleton is in talks with Shrewsbury Town over a new long-term deal as manager.The 49-year-old was appointed on a contract until the end of the season after Gareth Ainsworth's sudden departure to Gillingham last month.He had nine games to save them from relegation but was unable to keep the Shrews in League One, having inherited a side which was already nine points from safety.They were relegated on Good Friday to end a 10-year spell in the third tier and will finish bottom.Appleton wants to stay and there is a belief a deal will get done and he has already spoken of his desire to extend his time in Shropshire.He told BBC Radio Shropshire this month: "We're due to sit down next week, I think it's Tuesday, to discuss what potentially could happen. It's something that hopefully will be a positive discussion."When I first came in, the first interview, it had been a while. As an individual, you've got to find out if that fire's still burning, that passion. What I have found out is that it's burning more than ever."I love being on the grass, that's what I do best. But I've enjoyed the other side of it, trying to build and shape the team in a different way. The feedback I've been getting from players, staff and fans has been positive."Former Manchester United midfielder Appleton has also managed Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn , Leicester, Lincoln, Oxford, where he earned his first promotion, and Charlton.

Port Vale sign Shrewsbury midfielder Shipley
League One newcomers Port Vale have signed Shrewsbury Town midfielder Jordan Shipley on a two-year follows the conclusion of Shipley's contract with Salop after making 125 appearances since joining in 27-year-old earned two promotions with Coventry City before linking up with the Shropshire side, including helping the Sky Blues reach the Championship in 2020."Jordan's signing represents another really strong addition to the squad and we're all pleased to have him on board," Port Vale boss Darren Moore told the club's website., external"He's another player that has played regularly at this level and above, so I have no doubt he will strengthen us and we'll look forward to welcoming him to Vale Park when the players return for pre-season training."

Hamilton Accies part company with Jamie Barjonas as player exodus continues
The League One outfit have said their goodbyes to more players this week Jamie Barjonas has become the latest player to leave Hamilton Academical as the club prepares to begin pre-season training on Monday. Crisis-hit Accies, who are still waiting to hear from the SPFL if their switch to Broadwood Stadium this summer has been ratified, have seen a number of players depart in recent weeks after their relegation to League One. The club was hit with a 15-point deduction for breaching multiple SPFL rules and they have since announced their academy has left the club's spiritual home at New Douglas Park for a new location in the town. Midfielder Barjonas was out of contract at the end of May and won't be having his deal at Accies renewed. His exit follows that of Connor Murray earlier this week after he opted to join Northern Ireland Premiership side Coleraine, where he spent a spell on loan in summer 2024. This summer Accies have so far lost skipper Sean McGinty and Euan Henderson to Lanarkshire rivals Airdrie, while goalkeeper Charlie Albinson and striker Nikolay Todorov have triggered relegation release clauses. So far, winger Steven Bradley is the only signing extension the club has announced. Their released and retained list is still to be published. Meanwhile, it is understood midfielder Barry Maguire also has a relegation release clause but is yet to decide if he will be going or staying, with the club eager for him to stick around. Accies boss John Rankin will report back for duty with his players on Monday as preparations begin for the 2025/26 campaign, but they will do so shrouded in uncertainty. The proposed move to Broadwood has still to be officially sanctioned and the league fixtures are due to be released on Friday.
