Prop Tom Clarkson called up by British & Irish Lions as front row cover in Australia
The Lions said there were no injury issues with the three tightheads they have: Tadhg Furlong, Will Stuart and Finlay Bealham.
Clarkson was summoned only to 'provide additional front row cover,' the Lions said.
The Lions have only four more matches left on tour, the three-test series against Australia beginning next Saturday in Brisbane and a midweek match against a First Nations and Pasifika XV the following week in Melbourne.
Clarkson has eight caps for Ireland and started in the recent tour wins over Georgia and Portugal, against which he scored his first test try.
Clarkson's arrival will increase the number of Leinster players in the Lions squad to 14, and the Ireland contingent to 18.
The Lions have been seeking reinforcements lately. Fellow Ireland and Leinster back Jamie Osborne joined the squad on Sunday, and England hooker Jamie George was on his way from Argentina.

‘I feel young again': Running back James Butler hitting new highs with B.C. Lions
VANCOUVER – James Butler doesn't mind standing outside of the spotlight. And on a B.C. Lions offence featuring the likes of quarterback Nathan Rourke and receivers Justin McInnis and Keon Hatcher, a running back might skirt attention. Not Butler. The 30-year-old American has been a star for B.C. this season. He leads the league in rushing yards with 474 and will look to add to the total Saturday when the Lions (3-3) host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-1). Last week, Butler amassed a career-high 171 rushing yards, 35 receiving yards and a touchdown as B.C. downed the Edmonton Elks 32-14. 'I feel young again, wearing my college number (20),' the running back said. 'It's easy for me to just fly under the radar and just try to be the little spark I can be.' Butler's success follows a difficult 2024 campaign where the University of Iowa product saw action in just 10 games for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, tallying 522 rushing yards and two TDs. The numbers were well off the career-high 1,116 yards and seven majors he logged for the Ticats in 2023 and he was released by Hamilton in January. Just hours later, Butler signed with the Lions, the team where he started his CFL career in 2021 before breaking out with a 1,060-yard showing in 2022. The move reunited him with Rourke and the duo wasted little time in picking up where they left off. 'For us, there's so much trust,' said the Canadian QB, noting that Butler has found a way to up his game this season. 'I think he's been playing out of his mind. He's been playing better than I think he did in '22. … A lot of the times, I'm just watching. I've got the best seat in the house for watching him get to work.' The admiration goes both ways. 'I feel like when you've got No. 12 back there, he just gives you a chance. Nate just gives you a chance, and he just makes plays,' Butler said. 'We always knew he's going to be destined for a great thing. 'So just being there, being back with him is nice. Even when I was with Nate (back in 2021 and 22), I was a little bit younger. So I just feel younger. I feel young again. It's nice.' Butler and Rourke will be in for a challenge Saturday when the Lions go up against the Riders. Saskatchewan is coming off its first loss of the season after dropping a 24-10 decision to the Calgary Stampeders last week. The Lions have already gone up against the Roughriders once this year, taking a 37-18 loss in Regina back on June 28. Despite the final score, B.C. felt the game easily could have had a different result if they'd done a few things differently, Butler said. 'I don't remember the score, but I never felt like we were really out of it, except maybe towards the end of the game,' he said. 'So I just feel like if we take care of the ball, I just feel like it'll be a different game.' The Riders will be without a star returner Mario Alford for the contest. The speedster left the game against Calgary in the first quarter due to an injury and did not practice with his teammates this week. 'That's Super Mario, man. That's a tough one to lose,' said Riders head coach Corey Mace. 'Certainly he's been playing out of his mind, I thought, to this point in the season. It just sucks. But ultimately, it sucks for him.' Alford will be replaced in the lineup by Drae McRay, a first-year receiver out of Texas Tech. The game will be an opportunity for a rookie who showed 'fearlessness' in pre-season play, Mace said. Brian Harman hunts down another British Open title with early lead at Royal Portrush
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — Brian Harman took dead aim in a mild breeze and surprising sunshine Friday at Royal Portrush for a 6-under 64 that sent him into the weekend hunting another British Open title. He was called the 'Butcher of Hoylake' when Harman won the claret jug at Royal Liverpool two years ago because the British press was fascinating by the Georgia native's love for hunting. Now it's about his golf, and it was superb. Harman played bogey-free, only once having to stress for par as Royal Portrush allowed for some good scoring in weather that again did not live up to its expectation. Not that anyone was complaining. Temperatures were warm, at least by Irish standards. The breeze was noticeable without being overly punishing. 'They're very different golf courses, but the golf is similar,' Harman said. 'You've got to be able to flight your golf ball. You've got to know how far everything's going. Then you can't get frustrated. You're going to end up in funny spots where it doesn't seem fair, and you just have to kind of outlast that stuff.' Among those who finished, Harman at 8-under 134 was three shots clear of a group that included Harris English (70), Harman's former teammate at Georgia; Rasmus Hojgaard of Denmark (68), Tyrrell Hatton of England (69) and Robert MacIntyre of Scotland (66). Rory McIlroy broke par for the second straight round and lost ground. Thousands of spectators followed him along hills ands knobs. There were cheers, but not many roars as McIlroy went around in 69. He wasn't at his best in the opening round and was pleased to be only three behind. He was at least five shots back going into the weekend. But at least he's still playing, after a terrific rally to miss the cut by one shot at Royal Portrush in 2019. 'I didn't have this opportunity six years ago, so to play an extra two days in this atmosphere in front of these crowds, I'm very excited for that,' McIlroy said. 'I feel like my game's definitely good enough to make a run.' Scottie Scheffler played in the afternoon. He hit his shot down the middle of the fairway, his next one to 6 feet, his third one in the hole for a birdie. And then out came the umbrellas and some of the heaviest rain of the week. It lasted only a few holes. Harman had a five-shot lead after 36 holes at Hoylake when he won in 2023, and he wound up winning by six with a game so steady that no one made a serious run at him. He is likely to have a little more company this time around. But his game looked to be as superb as ever. He was putting for birdie on just about every hole. He was never out of position. Harman opened with an approach to 3 feet on the first hole and drilled his second shot on the par-5 second to 18 feet for a tap-in birdie. He finished with another dandy, an approach to 8 feet on the 18th hole. 'I'm not trying to be heroic or do anything crazy. I know that I've got the game to do it, and it's just a matter of executing and staying in my own head,' Harman said. Among those chasing is Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, making yet another case that he could be the first American playing captain the Ryder Cup since 1963. Bradley is coming off a win at the Travelers Championship. Now he appears to be finally figuring out links golf. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Bradley has missed the cut the last five times and his best finish in 11 appearances is a tie for 15th in 2013 at Muirfield. 'It was nice because I really wanted to play the weekend for the first time in, like, years,' Bradley said. Conway rides his luck to lead New Zealand to comfy T20 win over Zimbabwe
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — If Devon Conway was a cat, he used eight of nine lives to lead New Zealand over Zimbabwe by eight wickets in Twenty20 cricket on Friday. Conway was dropped on 1, should have been run out on 34, survived a strong lbw appeal and miscued shots all over Harare Sports Club that happened to land safely. He ended up hitting the winnings runs, pulling Trevor Gwandu to the midwicket boundary for New Zealand to win with 6.1 overs to spare. Zimbabwe was made to bat first and scored only 120-7, and New Zealand replied with 122-2, Conway top-scoring with an unbeaten 59 off 40 balls, his first T20 half-century in 17 months. 'Got a bit lucky early and fortunate I got through that period,' Conway said. 'It was nice to spend some time in the middle.' New Zealand has two wins from two games in the T20 tri-series with South Africa. Zimbabwe opening batters Wessly Madhevere and Brian Bennett greeted the New Zealanders aggressively. But the run rate was falling from eight an over even before Bennett, 20 off 19, gave Henry his first wicket at the end of the powerplay. New Zealand could count on three spinners to Zimbabwe's one, and Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra put the brakes on the home side. The only other decent scorer was Madhevere, who backed away to hit Adam Milne to the off side and lost his off stump after 36 off 32 balls. Henry took 3-26 and Santner and Ravindra a wicket each. When New Zealand batted, Blessing Muzarabani dropped Conway in the first over but made up for it by dismissing Tim Seifert in the second. As Conway rode his luck, Ravindra was on the charge with three consecutive boundaries off Gwandu and a six over deep backward point. His 30 off 19 lifted New Zealand more than halfway to the target. Conway didn't look comfortable until he was in the high 30s, but he and Daryl Mitchell, 26 off 19, steered New Zealand home by a wide margin.
