Gqeberha teen dies by suicide amid Facebook cyberbullying claims

A 14-year-old Grade 8 learner from Kariega in the Eastern Cape has died by suicide. Social media users are pointing to alleged Facebook cyberbullying as a possible factor.
SAPS Kamesh confirmed that officers received a call from the Trauma Unit at Kariega Provincial Hospital on Tuesday, 13 May, around 21:30.
When they arrived, hospital staff informed them that the girl's father had found her hanging from the roof of their home in the Moegesukkel informal settlement, Kariega.
Her family rushed her to the hospital, but she died shortly after arrival. The young girl was later identified as Shemeeque Davis. TEEN COMMITS SUICIDE AFTER ALLEGED FACEBOOK POST
Police did not find a suicide note. They opened an inquest docket and confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
Social media users have claimed that the girl was targeted in a Facebook group in the days leading up to her death. They have shared posts suggesting she faced bullying and ridicule, which sparked outrage and calls for accountability.
Police have not confirmed the cyberbullying allegations or linked them to her death.
Davis was a learner at Uitenhage High School, which mourns her passing. In an official statement, the school said:
'It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of one of our Grade 8 learners. As a school community, we extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.'
The bodies of 19-year-old Hailie-Jade Coboza and her 40-year-old mother, Lusanda, were found two weeks ago in their home in Sakhasonke Village, Walmer Location, Gqeberha.
SAPS Walmer officers responded to reports of gunfire at the scene. While investigating, detectives uncovered key leads that led them to search local hospitals.
At Dora Nginza Hospital, police arrested the first suspect, who was receiving treatment for a leg injury.
Further investigations led police to a residence in Greenshields Park, Gqeberha, where they arrested three more suspects.

Fabulous reads: A tangled thriller of truths and lies

The Woman on the Ledge, Ruth Mancini, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9781529909807 The Woman on the Ledge is a gripping, revenge-filled mystery thriller with an unreliable narrator. It will keep you on your toes with the unexpected plot twists. Just as you think you have things figured out, Ruth Mancini will pull the rug from right under you. The story follows Tate Kinsella, a thirty-something struggling actress working an office temp job at a bank in London. Her life takes a dramatic twist after she stops a woman, Helen, from jumping to her death at an office Christmas party. The next day, however, a second suicide attempt seems to have been shockingly successful. But things are not as they seem, and turn from bad to worse when it appears that the woman who died was not only murdered but is actually the wife of one of Tate's bosses – a man she is said to be having an affair with, and not Helen. In fact, police are unable to find a single shred of evidence to prove that Helen ever existed. When police start to poke holes in Tate's statements she is quickly named the primary suspect. Also read: Fabulous reads: Chris Carter delivers gore, grief, and grit Although Tate protests her innocence, all the evidence points to her being the murderer. There was a fair amount of repetition as Tate backtracks and makes amendments to her accounts, which was somewhat irksome. However, Ruth Mancini manages to deftly weave these alternative accounts into the storyline. I suspect that there will be a few that find the motive and true plot a bit trite. Personally, I would like to read inspiring stories with strong female characters where the women do not have to endure abuse. – Mariclair Smit 3/5 stars For more from Northglen News, follow us on Facebook , X or Instagram. Outrage as Joslin Smith's mom Kelly 'finds love' in prison

Kelly Smith – the mother of missing girl Joslin Smith – has reportedly found love whilst in prison, and South Africans are engaged. Earlier this month, the Saldanha Bay woman and her former partner, Jacquin 'Boeta' Appollis, and pal Steveno van Rhyn were sentenced to life for trafficking and kidnapping. Joslin disappeared on 19 February 2024. She has yet to be found. According to various social media users, reports have emerged that Kelly Smith has allegedly found love with a man behind bars. The rumoured prison fling developed whilst Kelly and the man were being held in police custody cells in Langebaan. At the time, Kelly was attending her trial for trafficking and kidnapping her daughter, Joslin Smith, at the Saldanha Bay Multipurpose Centre, sitting under the Western Cape High Court. She is now serving her time in Pollsmoor Prison, where she is likely to appeal her sentence. Kelly's rumoured partner is facing charges of business robbery. On social media, content creators were shocked at the revelation. TikToker Bleskop Brille shared: 'We do not want to know about Kelly's love life, true or not. We want the truth about Joslin! Another, Ash Baby, posted: 'Kelly is a true narcissist, like Judge Nathan Erasmus said. She will manipulate everyone and everything to get her way.' A third, Facebook user 'Coloured Girls Rock,' posted: 'Kelly has a new boyfriend, and she's in jail, sending love letters to some dude. I don't even know if she's got perfume to spray on the envelope. She shouldn't be allowed to even speak to people till she tells us where Joslin is.' @bleskopbrille We don't want to know about Kelly's love life! True or not! We want the truth of Joslin! Boeta has no love lost now if this is true, so he can talk and say what really happened to Joslin Smith!! #bleskopbrille #whatdoyouthink #kellysmith #joslinsmith #missing #missingchildren #humantrafficking #colouredpeople #afrikaanstiktoks #tiktoksouthafrica #fyp #fypp #trendingontiktok #goviral #foryourpagetiktok ♬ original sound – Bleskop brille Others left comments like: 'Kelly can't even provide for or protect her kids, but she can find love. For what – to have more kids?' 'Kelly is living her best life in prison.' 'She must stay infamous – where is Joslin? At the time of her arrest, Kelly Smith was in a relationship with fellow convicted trafficker, Jacquin 'Boeta Appollis', who was portrayed as a 'father figure' to Joslin Smith. The missing girl's biological father is Jose Emke, who reportedly ended their 'abusive' relationship. It's unclear when Kelly and Boeta parted ways. However, reports have indicated that Kelly miscarried Boeta's baby whilst being held in police custody in Pollsmoor Prison last year.
