Man United Bigger Than The Club World Cup! US Record Crowd Recorded For Friendly vs West Ham
Manchester United's 2-1 win over West Ham at MetLife Stadium set a new U.S. soccer attendance record with 82,566 fans. Bruno Fernandes scored both goals.
Manchester United's 2–1 victory over West Ham United at MetLife Stadium on Saturday wasn't just a showcase of pre-season Premier League football—it was a historic night for U.S. soccer attendance.
A staggering crowd of 82,566 fans packed the stadium, setting a new record for the largest attendance at a football match in the United States in 2025.
The turnout eclipsed the previous high set earlier this year during the FIFA Club World Cup final, which drew 81,118 spectators.
The match, part of United's U.S. pre-season tour, saw The MetLife Stadium, home to the NFL's New York Giants and New York Jets, transform into a sea of red and claret as supporters turned out in full force.
On the field, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes stole the spotlight with a commanding performance, scoring both goals in the victory. The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder was clinical and composed, reminding fans why he was named United's Player of the Year last season.
The match was competitive throughout, with West Ham pulling one back in the second half, but the result remained in United's favor. The quality of play, combined with the electric crowd atmosphere, created a memorable experience for all in attendance.
Saturday's attendance milestone underscores the surging interest in European football among American audiences. With elite clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich regularly including the U.S. on their pre-season itineraries, fan engagement has soared.
Events like the Club World Cup, which made its U.S. debut this year, and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup—hosted jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico—are contributing to a soccer boom in the region. MetLife Stadium, which will host matches during the 2026 World Cup, continues to prove itself as a prime venue for the sport's biggest occasions.
Following the record-breaking night, Manchester United will continue their U.S. tour with upcoming fixtures on the West Coast.

Clubs in Europe's top division in rugby league vote to add more teams from 2026
HEADINGLEY, England (AP) — Clubs in the Super League, the top-tier of European rugby league, have voted to increase the number of teams in the competition to 14 from next season. HT Image The future structure of the league was discussed during a meeting at Headingley, north England, on Monday, with a proposal agreed to immediately open up two additional places, provided certain conditions are met. 'The 12 existing Betfred Super League clubs have today voted to extend the competition to 14 teams for the 2026 season, subject to conditions,' a statement from Super League (Europe) Limited read. 'This would be done by combining the Club Grading System introduced to determine Super League membership as part of the sport's long-term strategic partnership with IMG in 2022, with an independent panel to be chaired by Lord Jonathan Caine, who was recently elected as a member of the Rugby Football League Board, and the Strategic Review Sub-Committee. 'The top 12 clubs under grading at the conclusion of the 2025 domestic season will therefore be joined by two clubs recommended by that panel — provided the panel judges there are two applications of sufficient merit against the set criteria. 'Further details of the composition of the panel and the timing of the process will be confirmed in due course.' The Super League currently includes eleven teams from England and one side based in France — Catalans Dragons. The new proposals could see Championship teams such as Toulouse Olympique, Bradford Bulls, York Knights and London Broncos considered for a place in the expanded 14-team top-flight. Salford Red Devils, meanwhile, could see their Super League spot for 2026 reviewed given the club's ongoing financial issues.

Pep Guardiola reveals plans after Manchester City stint, hints at decade-long break
Pep Guardiola has confirmed he plans to step away from football management once his time at Manchester City comes to an end - and has hinted that his sabbatical could last up to 15 years. The 54-year-old Spaniard, who extended his contract with City last year to remain at the club until 2027, opened up about his future in an interview with GQ Spain, saying he has "more than decided" about taking a lengthy break from the game to focus on know that after this stage with City, I'm going to stop - that's for sure. It's decided, more than decided," Guardiola said. "I don't know how long I'll stop for - a year, two, three, five, ten, fifteen - I don't know. But I will leave after this spell with City because I need to stop and focus on myself, on my body."The Manchester City manager, widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches of his generation, has enjoyed a historic spell at the Etihad Stadium. Since joining in 2016, he has led the club to 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, a Champions League crown, and global success in the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. However, the 2024-25 season marked a rare low point under Guardiola's leadership. City ended the campaign without a major trophy for the first time in eight years - finishing third in the Premier League, falling short in the Champions League, and losing the FA Cup final to Crystal on the scrutiny that comes with the job, Guardiola said: "I've spent four or five months this year in every away stadium with the crowd chanting, 'You'll be sacked in the morning.' There's no other profession - not architects, teachers, doctors, or journalists - where 60,000 people ask you to lose your job."Despite the criticism, Guardiola defended his team's performance over the past season. "It hasn't been that bad. We reached the FA Cup final and finished third - we didn't finish 12th," he said. "Even when I was winning, I didn't feel we were anything special. Now that we haven't won, I don't feel like a failure either."Guardiola remains optimistic about City's future, suggesting that the struggles of the past year could help lay the foundation for long-term success. "This season has been healthy for us. Success can confuse you. I think it will be good for the next five or ten years. And next season, we'll do better."Manchester City begin their 2025-26 campaign away at Wolves on August 16, with Guardiola set to lead the side for what could be his final chapter at the club. Beyond that, the Catalan coach appears ready to step away from the spotlight - perhaps for much longer than expected.- EndsMust Watch

'Don't Know How Long I'll Stop For': Pep Guardiola Confirms Break From Football After Man City Exit
Pep Guardiola reiterated his belief that he will take a significant break from football after his tenure at City ends in 2027. Pep Guardiola is a man of his word. The Manchester City boss has yet again confirmed that he will take a significant break from football management after his tenure at the Etihad ends. The 54-year-old Spaniard, who has become the most successful manager in Manchester City's history, has collected 18 trophies during his reign, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League crown. Though his current contract runs until 2027, Guardiola made it clear in a new interview with GQ Spain that his departure from the club will also mark a pause in his managerial career. 'I know that after this stage with City I'm going to stop, that's for sure," Guardiola said. 'It's decided, more than decided." 'I don't know how long I'll stop for — a year, two years, three years, five, ten, fifteen — I don't know. But I will leave after this spell with City because I need to stop and focus on myself, on my body." In May, Guardiola had already hinted at his City exit, stating that he intended to leave once his current deal expires. Despite signing a contract extension as recently as November, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is clear about stepping away when this chapter closes. 'I've spent four or five months this year in every away stadium with the crowd chanting, 'You'll be sacked in the morning. They're going to fire you'," he noted. 'There's no other profession — architect, teacher, doctor, journalist — where 60,000 people ask you to lose your job." Last season proved testing both on and off the pitch. City were plagued by injuries, including a major blow in September when Ballon d'Or winner Rodri suffered a right ACL injury. The club suffered its earliest Champions League exit since the 2012–13 campaign and finished third in the Premier League, far from the dominance they've shown in previous years. Guardiola acknowledged that a downturn was inevitable. 'When you win six Premier Leagues, there comes a time when you go down. It's human nature… It's a process that had to happen. It took longer to happen, and when it did, it went deeper than we could have imagined." Despite the recent setbacks, Guardiola remains optimistic about the upcoming season — and about Manchester City's long-term prospects. 'Speaking on behalf of Manchester City, it has been very healthy for us," he said. 'Because success can confuse you. It hasn't confused us for many years, but this year the players have been injured a lot." He added that the adversity could serve as a springboard for future success. 'I think it will be very good for the next five or ten years. And next year, we'll do better." Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
