Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla to lead key experiments aboard ISS, boosting India's space presence
In a proud moment for India, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will conduct a series of groundbreaking scientific experiments in space as part of an international mission. Speaking on Tuesday, Dr. Singh — Minister of State for Science & Technology and the PMO — said Shukla's involvement in this high-profile mission reflects India's growing stature in global space exploration. Captain Shukla will lead studies on physical, cognitive, and physiological responses in microgravity, including the effects of prolonged electronic display exposure — crucial for planning long-term space missions. He will also explore skeletal muscle dysfunction and test potential therapies to counter its impact. One of the most anticipated experiments involves extremophiles like Tardigrades, resilient organisms that can survive harsh space environments. These tests could offer insights into the possibility of life beyond Earth. Shukla is one of four astronauts selected for India's ambitious Gaganyaan mission, slated for launch in early 2027. Before that, he will fly to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard the Axiom-4 mission, with Group Captain Prasanth Nair as his designated backup. This collaboration is the result of discussions held during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States. Dr. Singh credited space sector reforms post-2014 — including opening the Sriharikota launch center to the public and welcoming private participation — as pivotal in India's ascent in NewSpace leadership. Highlighting India's goal of becoming Atmanirbhar in the space domain, Dr. Singh called these scientific missions 'game-changers' for the nation's space ecosystem. He also revealed that India's space economy is set to surge from $8 billion to $44 billion by 2047, aligning with the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision. Beyond space, the Minister emphasized India's renewed focus on deep ocean exploration through the Deep Ocean Mission, and clean energy via nuclear research and Bharat Small Modular Reactors — all contributing to India's commitment to Net Zero emissions by 2070.

Astronaut Shukla's experiments on ISS of immense importance for future missions: Jitendra Singh
'It is a matter of pride for all Indians that Shubhanshu Shukla will be part of this international space mission. His role will be just as significant as anyone else involved,' the minister said. In an interview with PTI Videos, Singh said Shukla is set to travel to the ISS as part of Axiom Space mission next week and his role will be just as significant as of the other three astronauts participating in the commercial mission. New Delhi, Jun 3 (PTI) Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla will perform scientific experiments on the International Space Station that hold immense importance for future space missions, including the Gaganyaan project, Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh said on Tuesday. Shukla is part of the Axiom-4 mission which is expected to lift off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, US, no earlier than June 8 and will spend 14 days onboard the International Space Station (ISS). 'While Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian astronaut to go to space, it was a Soviet mission with limited scope for conducting experiments since India's space technology was in its early stages. However, the situation today is different,' Singh said. Axiom-4 mission has lined up 60 experiments to be conducted by the four-member crew onboard the ISS, including seven planned by ISRO and five others that Shukla will participate in for NASA's human research programme. Union minister Singh said the experiments that Shukla will be conducting on the ISS are of immense importance for future missions – be it the Gaganyaan project or the Bharat Antariksh Station planned by India. Shukla will study physical, cognitive and physiological responses in space as well as the impact of utilizing continuous electronic displays in microgravity, an important aspect for future long-duration space missions, the minister said. Singh said Shukla's research will also focus on skeletal muscle dysfunction in space and the evaluation of therapeutic strategies to counter these effects. Shukla will carry out experiments on the revival, survival, and reproduction of extremophiles such as tardigrades – known for their resilience in extreme conditions. Besides Shukla, the mission pilot for the Axiom-4 mission, the other crew include Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary, marking both European nation's first travel to the ISS in history and the second government-sponsored human spaceflight mission in over 40 years. CBSE allows class 10th Basic Math students to opt for Standard Math in class 11th
In a significant move aimed at enhancing academic flexibility, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that students who studied Basic Mathematics (code 241) in Class 10 will be permitted to opt for Standard Mathematics (code 041) in Class 11 for the academic session 2025-26. This decision continues the relaxation first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic and extended in subsequent years. Background: Two levels of mathematics In 2020, CBSE introduced two levels of Mathematics for the Secondary School Examination. These are: Mathematics (Standard): Designed for students intending to pursue Mathematics at the senior secondary level and beyond. Mathematics (Basic): For students not planning to take Mathematics at higher levels. Under the original guidelines, students who opted for Basic Mathematics in Class 10 were restricted to studying Applied Mathematics in Class 11. CBSE policy update for session 2025-26 Recognising the evolving educational landscape and the need for greater academic flexibility, CBSE has decided to continue the relaxation allowing Basic Mathematics students to choose Standard Mathematics in Class 11. However, this is contingent upon the school principal or head of the institution ensuring that the student possesses the necessary aptitude and ability to handle the subject's rigor. Furthermore, CBSE has emphasised that once subjects are finalised in the List of Candidates for board examinations, no changes will be permitted. Therefore, students and parents are advised to make informed decisions regarding subject choices. Implications for students This policy change offers students increased flexibility in shaping their academic trajectories, particularly benefiting those who may have initially chosen Basic Mathematics but later decide to pursue fields requiring a stronger foundation in Mathematics. It aligns with the broader objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for a more holistic and flexible educational approach. CBSE's decision to allow Basic Mathematics students to opt for Standard Mathematics in Class 11 reflects a commitment to accommodating diverse student needs and aspirations. By providing this flexibility, the board supports students in making choices that align with their evolving academic interests and career goals. Ready to empower your child for the AI era?
