Henry Seitz Named National Merit Finalist
Spring Hill High School senior Henry Seitz has been named a National Merit Finalist, an honor awarded to less than 1% of high school seniors nationwide for exceptional academic achievement.
SPRING HILL, Kan. - March 21, 2025 - Spring Hill High School senior Henry Seitz has been named a National Merit Finalist, placing him among the top 1% of high school seniors nationwide in this prestigious academic competition.
The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes students with exceptional academic ability and potential for collegiate success. Seitz advanced from Semifinalist to Finalist status after meeting rigorous scholastic requirements and earning high scores on the PSAT/NMSQT.
'We are incredibly proud of Henry for this outstanding achievement,' said Spring Hill High School Principal Marc Williams. 'This recognition reflects his dedication to academic excellence and the strong support system of educators, family, and peers at Spring Hill High School.'
More than 1.3 million students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program each year, but only about 15,000 earn the distinction of Finalist. Seitz will now be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, which will be awarded later this spring.
'This is a remarkable accomplishment that speaks to Henry's hard work and commitment to learning,' said Dr. Link Luttrell, superintendent of Spring Hill Schools. 'We celebrate his success and look forward to seeing what he will accomplish in the future.'

U-46 plans to cover cost of high school juniors taking the ACT in fall
School District U-46 will pay for high school juniors to take the ACT test in the fall in an effort to familiarize students with the exam, meet dual-credit application requirements and potentially boost scores. The standardized tests will cost $121,862 according to a proposal endorsed Monday by the U-46 school board and to be formally approved June 16. 'This is a new initiative to stay in alignment with the Illinois State Assessment for 11th-graders,' said U-46 Assessment Director Matthew Raimondi, who spoke about the plan prior to the meeting. The state requires all 11th-grade students and any untested 12th-grade students take the ACT with Writing exam as part of the spring state assessment in order to graduate. That test features a 40-minute written essay session, according to the ACT website. 'For many years previously, the SAT was part of the graduation requirement in Illinois,' Raimondi said. 'Now, by offering the ACT to juniors in the fall, it provides students the opportunity to get familiar with the format before the mandatory ACT in the spring.' The district had considered offering the PreACT to juniors in the fall but opted against it because Elgin Community College and other community colleges do not accept its scores for admitting qualifying dual-credit students, he said. PreACT scores also aren't considered for scholarship opportunities, such as those offered by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. 'The actual ACT does count for dual credit, directly aligns to the state test, is college reportable and allows for students to submit a 'Super Score,'' Raimondi said. A Super Score lets students to submit their highest score from each test subject from different test dates when applying to college, he said. According to a memo provided as part of the Monday meeting agenda, 'a student who performs best in English and reading in the fall and in math and science in the spring may submit an ACT superscore combining their top section scores for college admissions.' After taking the ACT test in the fall, based on their performance, students will have access to targeted activities to build their subject skills in preparation for taking the mandatory ACT in the spring, the memorandum said. 'We are excited to offer this new opportunity for our students and help them prepare for the spring test,' Raimondi said prior to the meeting. The district has been providing the PSAT, which aligns with the state test, and offers dual-credit opportunities, both of which can lead to scholarship opportunities through the National Merit program, he said. 'We are planning to continue to offer the PSAT to 10th-graders and 11th-graders in the fall,' Raimondi said. With the state and the federal government requiring high school students to take so many tests, Superintendent Suzanne Johnson said staff would provide school board members with a calendar of when during the 2025-26 school year U-46 will be offering the various assessments.

Richland senior named National Merit Scholar
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Richland High School senior Boyi Chen has been named a 2025 National Merit Scholar and collected one of the 2,500 competitive scholarships available throughout the country. 'I am incredibly honored and grateful to receive this scholarship,' Chen said in a statement. 'This support will be invaluable as I pursue my career goals in the medical field.' The National Merit Scholarship program is an annual academic contest that recognizes talented high school students across the nation. Students qualify for the competition by completing the PSAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, and those who score highest move on to the semifinalist round, representing the top 1% of high school seniors in the country. Chen was a semifinalist in 2024, but did not advance. Students move on to the finals by submitting a detailed scholarship application, writing a compelling essay, maintaining good academic records, and providing an SAT or ACT score that confirms the PSAT or NMSQT results. Because Chen was accepted as a scholar this year, he earned a $2,500 scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Foundation. Winners are chosen by a panel of college admissions officers and high school counselors who examine each application. 'We are incredibly proud to celebrate Boyi's outstanding accomplishment in being named a National Merit Scholar and receiving this significant scholarship,' Richland High School Principal Timothy Regan said in a release. 'This award is a direct reflection of Boyi's remarkable intellect, relentless hard work, and the unwavering support of our dedicated faculty and staff.' Regan added that Chen's success serves as inspiration for everyone at Richland, and they are 'excited to see the incredible impact' that will have on his future endeavors.

Seitz to launch Diocese environmental plan during special Mass on Sunday
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Bishop Mark J. Seitz will celebrate a special bilingual Mass Sunday, May 25 and will sign and inaugurate the Diocese's environmental action plan. The Mass will be at 11 a.m. May 25 at St. Luke Catholic Church, 930 E. Redd Road. The Mass will mark the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si', Pope Francis' landmark encyclical on care for 'our common home,' and the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi's 'Canticle of the Creatures,' the Diocese said. As part of this diocesan celebration, Seitz will officially sign and inaugurate the Laudato Si' Action Plan for the Diocese of El Paso. 'This new plan will guide the local Church's commitment to the values of Laudato Si' and Laudate Deum, deepening efforts toward environmental stewardship and solidarity with the poor across all ministries and institutions,' the Diocese said. The Mass will bring together representatives from local parishes, Catholic organizations, and environmental advocacy groups, including the Care for Creation Ministry at St. Luke, the Texas Chapter of the Laudato Si' Movement, and New Mexico–El Paso Power and Light, the Diocese said. 'Pope Francis reminds us that care for the Earth is inseparable from care for the most vulnerable,' Seitz said. 'This plan invites every person, parish, and diocesan structure to reflect on our impact and take real steps to live more sustainably and faithfully.' Released on May 24, 2015, Laudato Si' called for an 'integral ecology' that recognizes the deep connections between the environmental crisis and global inequality, the Diocese said. In 2023, Pope Francis continued this message with Laudate Deum, which addressed the growing climate emergency and the moral urgency of collective action. The Diocese's new action plan will provide tools and guidance for all Catholics to engage in concrete steps, the Diocese said. These actions can include creating special ministries, evaluating use of resources and adopting sustainable practices, the Diocese said. The Laudato Si' Diocesan Action Commission is available to assist parishes and organizations looking to implement or expand environmental initiatives, the Diocese said.
