Grand Kyiv Ballet takes flight with ‘Swan Lake'

Boston Globe20-02-2025

The csárdás is omitted from the act three lineup of national dances and the beginning of act four is abbreviated; running time Wednesday was just over two hours, with one 20-minute intermission. There's some reduction in forces, but six couples for the first act waltz and polonaise is ample, and so is the contingent of 18 swans in act two and the quartet of foreign princesses hoping to wed Siegfried. The adjustments that have been made to the Petipa/Ivanov choreography are not significant. As is common in Slavic productions of 'Swan Lake,' the court has a Jester to comment on the action; Siegfried's Tutor, however, is absent.

The scenario offers some novel touches. Before receiving his birthday-present crossbow, Siegfried is knighted (by whom it's not clear) and given a medal by his princess-regent mother. When he enters in act two, swinging the crossbow in search of swans, Rothbart sneaks up behind him and stalks him. At the end of that act, Siegfried does not swear eternal fidelity to Odette. She bourrées off, drawn by Rothbart's invisible power; only then does Siegfried decide, making the two-finger troth mime, and once again, as the curtain falls, Rothbart appears behind him, as if to say, 'We'll see about that.'

Act one is pleasing, if a shade underpowered; Grand Kyiv's 'Swan Lake' comes to life when the 18 swans enter in act two, crisp and quiet in their pas emboîtés and sautés en arabesque. Svitlana Svinko's grounded Odette is as much woman as swan, wary of Siegfried more as a man than as a hunter. From the outset, there's a touch of the tragic about her. Svinko shows off feathery sissonnes, dreamy développés, a razor-sharp passé-relevé sequence, and, even at a slow adagio, superb control in attitude and arabesque on pointe. Her Odile is arch and authoritative; standing unsupported on pointe for a few seconds is no problem. As Siegfried, Daniel Kish serves up high-flying cabrioles and scissor jumps, neat double tours, and eye-catching tours à la seconde, but what for me stands out is confident, unobtrusive partnering that makes Svinko look good at every turn.
Other highlights include a flawless quartet of cygnets, a Spanish dance with deep backbends, a zippy Neapolitan, and a back somersault from the Jester. The fourth act includes a quartet of black swans, perhaps referring to Siegfried's perfidy; that's a Slavic tradition, and so is the conclusion, where Siegfried frees the swans by tearing off one of Rothbart's owl wings. Tchaikovsky's score rises from B minor to B major at this point, so it seems only right that Odette should rush into Siegfried's arms as dawn breaks and the curtain falls.

Yamal brilliance clinches La Liga title, domestic treble for Barcelona

Wonder kid Lamine Yamal again starred in a 2-0 win over Getafe that clinched the La Liga title and a domestic treble for FC Barcelona on Thursday, sealing a stellar debut season for coach Hansi Flick and breakout campaigns by Yamal and Ballon d'Or contender Raphina. This was Lamine Yamal's season. Advertisement So it just had to be the teenage phenom who scored the decisive goal to clinch Barcelona's 28th Spanish league title. And what a goal it was for the player who still wears dental braces and sports a new dyed-blond hairdo. The 17-year-old struck the winner in Barcelona's 2-0 victory at crosstown rival Espanyol on Thursday when he slid past two defenders outside the area and whipped one his now trademark left-footed curlers into the corner of the net. It was a perfect culmination to Yamal's last 10 months. After helping Spain win the European Championship last summer, Yamal excelled for Barcelona this campaign with his goals, dribbling and playmaking as he confirmed his status as the next big star of global soccer. Along with Raphinha, Pedri and company, and Barcelona was unstoppable. Advertisement 'I always try my best and today I was lucky it went in,' Yamal said. "I am very happy I could help the team and celebrate it.' Flick's team virtually ended Madrid's title defense when it beat its top rival 4-3 on Sunday, making it four of four clasico victories across all competitions this season. Liverpool are BIG admirers of €30m-rated Spanish jewel

Liverpool are facing uncertainty in the centre-back position. Although Virgil van Dijk has been secured to a contract until 2027, his defensive colleagues are not so sure of their futures. Ibrahima Konate is out of contract in 2026 and so far no breakthrough has been reached in talks over a new deal. If sporting director Richard Hughes doesn't succeed in tying him down then the Frenchman could well be sold this summer. Advertisement Also up for debate are Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez. Quansah, 22, could be sacrificed if the club manage to attract a decent fee while Gomez might well be sold having come close to joining either Aston Villa or Newcastle last year. If any of those three leaves then it opens a vacancy in the centre of Liverpool's defence. We've seen Jorrel Hato linked, along with Jarrad Branthwaite and others but there is another name now on the list and one which will be familiar to incoming Reds goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Liverpool like Cristhian Mosquera Cristhian Mosquera, 20, was outstanding for Valencia in LaLiga last season. The Spanish defender played 37 times for Los Che - ranking highly on FOTMOB for tackles won, duels won, interceptions and recoveries. Advertisement Mosquera has a contract which expires at the Mestalla in 2026 and this summer the club could be prepared to listen to transfer offers for their homegrown star. And now according to a new report on Caught Offside, Liverpool are tracking the youngster - although he could end up at RB Leipzig as a stepping stone before going to the Premier League. 'Liverpool are big admirers of Mosquera, who is also on Chelsea's radar and whose asking price would be in the region of €30m,' a report reads. Mosquera likely to go to Leipzig 'Tottenham, Crystal Palace and West Ham have also been monitoring Mosquera, but it's currently felt that he's leaning towards a move to RB Leipzig. Advertisement 'The player and his representatives feel he could be best served by a move to the Bundesliga before perhaps joining a top English club later.' Leipzig have successfully offloaded players like Konate, Naby Keita and Dominik Szoboszlai to the Reds over the years and if Mosquera follows suit then in the years ahead they could be back once again.
