I saw the Brad Pitt movie F1 last week, and it was excellent. Thrilled to see it turn up in today's Connections: Sports Edition. That green category is pretty simple, but if you need help with the puzzle, read on for hints and the answers.
Connections: Sports Edition is out of beta now, making its debut on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 9. That's a sign that the game has earned enough loyal players that The Athletic, the subscription-based sports journalism site owned by the Times, will continue to publish it. It doesn't show up in the NYT Games app but now appears in The Athletic's own app. Or you can continue to play it free online.

NFC South 2025 preview, plus

Inside: Key questions, breakout players and positions to watch in the AFC East, plus expected win totals for each team. This article is from Scoop City, The Athletic's NFL newsletter. Sign up here to receive it directly in your inbox. In 2024, the NFC South dressed nicely but struggled to stop anyone, finishing as the NFL's only division without an above-average defense in points allowed per game. If defense wins championships, the teams in this division don't have a shot at a Super Bowl. Or do they? Let's preview the NFC South. (BetMGM's 2025 expected regular-season win totals in parentheses, and all stats per TruMedia unless otherwise noted.) Key question: Can defense become a strength again? Their typically stout unit was plagued with injuries and inefficiency, finishing 16th in points against and 18th in yards allowed, their lowest marks since 2019. They addressed their edge position with former Pro Bowler Haason Reddick, still only 30, and should have an improved secondary with coveted rookie CB Benjamin Morrison and a healthy S Antoine Winfield Jr. They're each a key reason why the Buccaneers are listed among The Athletic's film guru Ted Nguyen's five defenses ready to break out. Advertisement Position to watch: Receiver. Will Mike Evans pass Jerry Rice's all-time record with a 12th consecutive 1,000-yard season? How does Chris Godwin, who was leading the NFL in receptions, receiving touchdowns and yards after the catch prior to a gruesome Week 7 injury, bounce back? (The story of Godwin's trying year is worth your time.) Add last year's third-round pick, Jalen McMillan, and this year's first-round pick, Emeka Egbuka, and you have plenty to follow with the league's deepest receiver room. Breakout coach: OC Josh Grizzard. Baker Mayfield's eighth offensive coordinator in as many seasons (oof), Grizzard was promoted from passing-game coordinator after the Bucs lost their OC to a head coaching gig for the second straight season. The relatively unknown Yale graduate is expected to maintain the system that produced one of the league's top offenses, which finished top four in both rushing and passing yards. Don't be surprised if Grizzard receives head coaching interviews after this season. Better than 2024? Yes. Their offense is almost fully intact, with the biggest loss being former OC Liam Coen. Defensive upgrades make this team poised for another 10-win season, especially after six of last season's eight losses (including playoffs) came in one-score games. Having one of the 10 easiest schedules should help them get back to the postseason, where the range of outcomes feels wide for a team that beat the Commanders, Lions and Eagles last year, but lost to the Dak Prescott-less Cowboys. Key question: Do they finally have a pass rush? Atlanta ranked 31st in sacks in 2024, which was actually an improvement for them. The Falcons rank 32nd across the past five, 10 and 20 seasons in total sacks. They used the draft's first round to add edge rushers Jalon Walker (pick No. 15) and James Pearce Jr. (No. 26), along with signing edge Leonard Floyd, 2016's No. 9 pick, to a one-year deal. Advertisement Position to watch: Safety. Their defense, below-average in nearly every passing category in 2024, ended the season by allowing 400-plus total yards to both the Commanders and Panthers. New DC Jeff Ulbrich is implementing a lighter, 3-4 base with a focus on stopping aerial attacks. Star S Jessie Bates III, returning S DeMarcco Hellams and rookie Xavier Watts (second behind Shedeur Sanders on the list of the draft's biggest steals) should play important roles. Breakout player: QB Michael Penix Jr. The Falcons were Ted's most likely offense to break out, thanks to the arm and processing of Penix, who looked like a franchise quarterback in his three-game stint. Surrounded by a top-10 offensive line, a star running back in Bijan Robinson and a talented group of receiving options, plus an offensive coordinator who impressed in year one, Penix has his teammates and coaches expecting a big season. Better than 2024? Yes. Before (current backup) Kirk Cousins' sudden decline, this team was 6-3 with a win against the Eagles. Armed with a rising QB and improved defense, this team should again challenge Tampa Bay for the division title. If Penix is better than advertised and their young pass rushers impress, watch out; the fourth-easiest schedule makes 10 wins a possibility, unless Raheem Morris again forgets when to use a timeout. Key question: Is their defense any better? The Panthers allowed the third-most points per game (31.4) of any team in the past 20 years (!!), yet DC Ejiro Evero kept his job. Star DT Derrick Brown hopes to be back for Week 1 after missing nearly all of 2024, and he'll be joined by free-agent signings DT Tershawn Wharton, S Tre'Von Moehrig and multiple new edge rushers. Linebacker remains a question. Position to watch: Receiver. Veteran Adam Thielen has spoken about the team as 'finally sick of being the same old, same old Panthers.' Critical to that is the development of quarterback-friendly target Tetairoa McMillan, this year's No. 8 pick, and Xavier Legette, a 2024 first-rounder who struggled to separate as a rookie but has a D.K. Metcalf-like run-after-catch ability. The Athletic examined what McMillan's film shows about his fit in Carolina. Advertisement Breakout player: TE Ja'Tavion Sanders. The Texas product joins Bryce Young as one of eight Panthers entering a pivotal year, as the 22-year-old now must compete with 2025 fifth-round pick Mitchell Evans. A 2024 fourth-rounder, Sanders has a goal of playing in the Pro Bowl this season, and realistically could double his numbers from his injury-plagued rookie year (33 receptions and 342 yards). Better than 2024? Depends on Young. Now protected by one of the league's best offensive lines, Young and his remarkable improvement have his teammates, coaches and even skeptical Charlotteans hopeful for a third-year breakout. If Young builds off his late-season surge, a No. 1 receiver emerges and their defense can be just average, this looks like a playoff team (in 2026). Key question: Who is their quarterback? 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler's highly publicized 0-6 record misses crucial context; Chris Olave missed most of those games, and all but one was against a playoff team. Still, the 24-year-old didn't show major promise in those starts, so new HC Kellen Moore chose the sneaky athletic but oft-injured Tyler Shough, 26 years old in September, in the second round of this year's draft. Neither Rattler nor Shough has separated himself this offseason, according to Saints tight end Foster Moreau, who said it remains 'anyone's job for the taking.' Not ideal. Position to watch: Cornerback. Trading stud CB Marshon Lattimore to Washington changed the nature of their secondary, as did losing CB Paulson Adebo to the Giants in free agency. Their top corner is now 22-year-old sophomore Kool-Aid McKinstry, who is joined by 2025 fourth-round pick Quincy Riley, fourth-year veteran Alontae Taylor and journeyman Isaac Yiadom. Signing free agent CB Asante Samuel Jr., who is familiar with DC Brandon Staley's system, would help. Breakout player: OT Taliese Fuaga. After the Saints used their 2025 first-round pick on left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., Fuaga can switch back to his natural role as right tackle, where he starred at Oregon State. With strength at both bookends and the league's best center in Erik McCoy, the line could emerge as an elite unit. Better than 2024? No, not yet. This team finished 4-4 after firing former HC Dennis Allen, but a full reset was needed. The Saints brought in Moore and respected DC Brandon Staley, improved the offensive line and secondary, and Derek Carr's retirement helped them get cap flexibility for the first time in years. Don't expect a quick turnaround, but, as usual, everything depends on quarterback play. Shough sounds ready: 'I think for me and what I've been through: I've been carted off the field, I've been booed, I've been an MVP, I've been a starter, I've been a backup to (Justin) Herbert. I'm like, throw some s— at me, you're not going to faze me if we start off 0-2 or I f— suck. It's going to be fine.' 📫 Enjoyed this read? 5-time Pro Bowl free agent CB urged to join Rams

The Los Angeles Rams still need some cornerback help after an offseason where they returned their entire 2024 lineup. L.A. also didn't draft any new cornerbacks or trade for any veterans despite interest in Jalen Ramsey, who ended up being sent to the Pittsburgh Steelers. There are a few other options out there for the Rams if they want another veteran, including five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro Stephon Gilmore. While it's unclear if Gilmore or the Rams are interested in each other, former Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Warren Herring urged Gilmore to come to L.A. on a recent episode of "The Money Down Podcast." 'Come over to LA. We like you in the blue and gold," Herring said. "You did it to us once. Now, get us one. You owe us one. We need some veteran presence in the room. We'd love to have you.' Herring is referencing the 2018 Super Bowl, when Gilmore and the New England Patriots beat the Rams, 13-3. Gilmore had an interception and five tackles in that game. While Gilmore, who'll be 35 in September, didn't say which teams he's interested in signing with, the veteran noted that "it's got to be the right situation for me. So, I'm not just going to sign anywhere." Gilmore, who's played for the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers over the past four years, has 32 career interceptions, 149 defended passes and 617 combined tackles in 180 games over 13 NFL seasons.

NHL Rumors: Bruins Targeted New Maple Leafs Forward

The Boston Bruins made several new additions to their roster so far this summer. While this is the case, they were also reportedly interested in a recently acquired Toronto Maple Leafs forward. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Bruins were one of the teams interested in Matias Maccelli before he was traded by the Utah Mammoth to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Advertisement "I heard there were three or four teams that were in on Maccelli," Friedman said. "I think Boston was one, and I think Edmonton was one." With Maccelli being a 24-year-old winger who has had past success in the NHL, it is not particularly surprising that the Bruins had him on their radar. It is no secret that their forward group needs more offense, and landing a winger like Maccelli could have helped things a bit on that front. While Maccelli posted just 18 points in 55 games last season with Utah, he is a prime bounce-back candidate heading into 2025-26 with the Maple Leafs. Just back in 2023-24 with the Arizona Coyotes, he recorded 17 goals and 57 points in 82 games. He also recorded 11 goals and 49 points in 64 contests with Arizona back in 2022-23, so there is no question that he can be an impactful forward when playing at his best. Nevertheless, Maccelli would have had the potential to be a strong addition to Boston's middle six. However, the Bruins will instead be facing him more often now that he has been traded to Toronto.
