Angel Reese makes WNBA history with latest double-double streak as Sky fall to Lynx

Yahoo3 days ago
Angel Reese is on a double-double streak once again.
The Chicago Sky star recorded her 10th-straight double-double on Tuesday night in their 91-68 loss to the Minnesota Lynx. That made her the first player in WNBA history to rack up multiple streaks of at least 10 straight games with a double-double.
Reese's current streak dates back to their loss to the Atlanta Dream on June 22, when she had 10 points and 19 rebounds. There are actually just five games this season in which Reese has fallen shy of that mark. She entered Tuesday's game averaging 14 points and 12.6 rebounds per contest.
Reese went on a 15-game double-double streak last year in her rookie campaign with the Sky. She averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game last summer and finished in second in the Rookie of the Year race behind Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. They Sky went just 13-27 last season, missed the playoffs and parted ways with head coach Teresa Weatherspoon.
Reese dropped 11 points and 11 rebounds in their blowout loss to the Lynx on Tuesday night, which marked their first game back from the All-Star break. She secured her double-double midway through the fourth quarter after driving in and sinking a tough contested layup in the paint.
Reese also picked up her seventh technical foul of the season in the loss. If she's assessed another one, she'll face an automatic one-game suspension from the league.
But despite her double-double, the Lynx still rolled to the dominant win. All five of their starters finished in double figures, with both Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride putting up 19 points a piece. They shot nearly 45% from the field as a group and held the Sky to just 12 points in the third period while breaking the game wide open. That pushed the Lynx to 21-4 on the season, and a perfect 13-0 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
Kamilla Cardoso also had a double-double for Chicago with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Kia Nurse finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Those two, along with Reese, were the only players to hit double figures for the Sky.
The Sky now sit at 7-16 on the season, which is the third-worst record in the league ahead of only the Dallas Wings and Connecticut Sun. Reese and the Sky will be back in action next on Thursday against the Seattle Storm.

Pirates unveil plans final bobblehead night giveaway of the season

The Pittsburgh Pirates have unveiled plans for the team's final bobblehead night of the season. The team announced that the final bobblehead night of the season in September will feature outfielder Bryan Reynolds. Pirates' bobbleheads are a hot commodity as fans have lined up hours before gates opened for the first two giveaways of the season that featured star pitcher Paul Skenes and Pittsburgh's own Mac Miller. The final bobblehead night of the season will be September 6 when the Pirates host the Milwaukee Brewers. The team says the first 20,000 fans in attendance will receive the bobblehead, which features Reynolds wearing a shirt with the sleeves cut off. "One thing's for sure, he likes sleeveless shirts… even on his bobbleheads," the team said in a video announcing the plans for the giveaway. Tickets for the game are available online. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. at PNC Park.

Commanders rookie cornerback is confident: 'I love guarding any receiver'

The Commanders really need a cornerback to step up in 2025. For starters, three corners from the 2024 team were not invited back for 2025. Free agent Michael Davis was a major disappointment, playing only sporadically late in the season. Davis, age 30, has yet to be signed, and his NFL career may be in jeopardy. Benjamin St-Juste repeatedly struggled, and it didn't help him that officials across the league were also determined to call St-Juste for holding, too often. The 27-year-old St-Juste is a physical player, and the Chargers signed him in March. Emmanuel Forbes, though selected 16th overall in the 2023 NFL draft by Ron Rivera, was so unimpressive that the Commanders did not even wait until the end of the season to release Forbes. They released Forbes, giving his roster spot to someone else. Forbes was claimed by the Rams and spent the offseason trying to bulk up. The Commanders responded by drafting cornerback Trey Amos (61 overall) in the 2025 draft. Following Friday's practice, Amos was quickly surrounded by some of the media. "I like going against everybody, man. It's like being in love with the game," Amos told reporters. "I just love guarding any receiver, any day. This is a me vs. me. You know, the dog mentality. Just going hard every day, no matter who's in front of me. Just having that having that mindset where no one catches the ball on you. Not being hard on yourself, but just understanding, that's your job. You gotta do what you have to do." At least Amos does seem to be more concerned about getting started on the right foot about doing his job, rather than talking about how great he is going to be, or trying to be cool. Wouldn't it be great if the Commanders in back-to-back years landed reliable corners (Mike Sainristil 2024 and Trey Amos 2025)? Not a single first-round draft pick of Rivera's (2020-2023) is on the roster in only the 2025 training camp. That is such a poor drafting record, resulting in the need to sign more veterans who can make an immediate impact. Perhaps GM Adam Peters has drafted another good corner in Amos. Time will tell, but the early returns are promising. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Commanders rookie CB Trey Amos excited to face NFL's best receivers

Georgia football injury, suspension report entering fall camp

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart updated the status of several ailing Georgia players during SEC media days. Overall, Georgia is pretty healthy entering fall camp. The Bulldogs don't appear to have a season-ending injury yet, but Georgia does have a pair of players recovering from knee surgeries in punter Brett Thorson and defensive back Ondre Evans. Perhaps Georgia's most important injury is at punter. Thorson is rehabbing a knee injury he suffered in the SEC championship, but has still earned preseason All-American honors this summer. "Thorson's coming back. He's done a good job," Smart said at SEC media days. "I can't sit here and tell you if he'll be the starting punter. It depends on his health. But he's starting some punting." Georgia is expected to start fall camp in early August as the Bulldogs prepare for the Aug. 30 season opener against the Marshall Thundering Herd. Georgia will not have to release an official injury report until Week 3's SEC opener at Tennessee, so the Bulldogs and coach Smart will likely be pretty hesitant to share details on injuries as usual. Expected to be ready for fall camp Running back Roderick Robinson (ankle) Offensive tackle Monroe Freeling (shoulder) Wait and see Tight end Jaden Reddell (ankle tightrope surgery) Outside linebacker Quintavius Johnson (ankle tightrope surgery) Punter Brett Thorson (knee) Defensive back Ondre Evans (torn ACL) Facing possible suspension Offensive lineman Jahzare Jackson (arrested) Kirby Smart is unlikely to publicly announce a suspension Jackson, but his arrest was significant and could even result in him being dismissed from the program. Former Georgia wide receiver Nitro Tuggle and offensive lineman Marques Easley were both arrested in the spring and left via the spring transfer portal, so we'll see if things unfold in a similar manner with Jackson.
