BREAKING NEWS Australian airports thrown into chaos as flights are DELAYED to Bali after volcano erupted

Daily Mail08-07-2025
Hundreds of Aussie holidaymakers' travel plans have been thrown into chaos after Indonesia 's Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano erupted.
The eruption on Monday sent ash and other volcanic material as high as 18 kilometres into the sky, causing at least five Virgin and Jetstar flights from Australia to be cancelled.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, which has erupted for a second time in as many months, also caused multiple delays at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport.
The chaos continued on Tuesday morning as more flights from Australia were delayed or cancelled.
Virgin Australia has delayed two scheduled morning departures out of Brisbane and Melbourne to Denpasar until later on Tuesday.
'Our team of expert meteorologists is closely monitoring conditions and ash cloud activity following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi yesterday,' a Virgin Australia spokesperson said.
'We encourage guests travelling to or from Bali today to closely monitor their flight status via the Virgin Australia website or app.'

Do YOU have 'tipping torment' when abroad? Half of holidaymakers fear awkward faux pas

Almost half of holidaymakers are not confident about tipping restaurant staff or taxi drivers when abroad, new research reveals. Some 46 per cent of adults battle so-called 'tipping torment' when it comes to gratuities as they fear an awkward holiday faux pas, data from trade association ABTA shows. Just 7 per cent of travellers are 'very confident' about a country's tipping culture and always know what is expected. Holidaymakers travelling to long-haul destinations are the most unsure, the research suggests. Some 64 per cent of travellers to the United Arab Emirates are not confident when tipping here. Gratuities of 10 to 15 per cent are generally expected in restaurants, taxis and hotels. In Japan, 57 per cent are unsure. Tipping isn't customary in Japan and can even be considered impolite. Meanwhile even travellers to Britain's holiday favourites such as Germany, Portugal and Spain are not confident with some 41 per cent, 40 per cent and 37 per cent unsure about the tipping culture. In Greece it's 40 per cent, 37 per cent in France while for Italy 38 per cent of visitors are unsure. Travellers to these destinations are not obligated to tip but rounding up a bill or leaving 5 to 10 per cent in restaurants is typical. Visitors to France will find service charge is typically included in their bill but it is still polite to leave small change or round up for good service. In Greece a generous 10 to 15 per cent is expected. Graeme Buck, director of communications at ABTA, said: 'Tipping practices vary widely around the world, so it's no surprise many holidaymakers feel unsure. 'In some countries, like the US, tipping is essential, while in others, like Japan, it's not expected at all. 'A little preparation before you travel can help you feel more confident and avoid awkward situations' Research the local customs before you travel and check the typical amounts you should be paying. Cash is king in many parts of the world and is preferred for some services like taxis, so it's wise to carry local currency with you.

Holidaymakers with pet separation anxiety simply pack the pooch

It's not a dog's life if you are a pet in Britain. Our national capacity to spoil our furry friends extends to taking them on holiday with us, according to research. A study has found that growing numbers of people are taking their dogs — and sometimes other animals — on trips because they cannot bear to be separated from them. The study found that roughly one in four (26 per cent) of owners have taken their pets on foreign holidays, and the trend is driven by young people. Half of 24 to 34-year-olds have travelled abroad with their animals, compared with less than one in ten over-55s (9 per cent). Londoners are the most likely to take their pets with them. Holidaymakers may not have noticed the trend because the law forbids pets, except guide dogs, from travelling in the cabin of aircraft to and from the UK. However, most flag carriers, such as British Airways and Air France, have long-established pet cargo schemes. You won't see touring pets in the cabin of the aircraft, they have their own area ALAMY The research found that two thirds of owners would like to be able to travel on a plane with their pets, a practice that is allowed for animals below a certain size and weight on many European and American routes. Most owners who take their dogs with them on holiday to Europe use ferries and Eurotunnel, which both accept animals. Pets are allowed to leave and return to the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme, provided they meet the entry and exit requirements, such as having a microchip, a rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate. The certificates must be issued by a vet within ten days of travel. Ferries and Eurotunnel allow for fuss-free travel, but get the paperwork in order ALAMY The survey of more than 1,200 pet owners by the Co-op found that more than half (56 per cent) of those who take their pets abroad do so because 'they're part of the family'. However, roughly one in eight (12 per cent) said they do so because pet boarding facilities are too expensive. Most licensed kennels charge £17 to £20 per dog per day. Rates in London are often far higher — up to £90 a night for standard kennels and even £120 a night for high-end 'canine country clubs'. A third (33 per cent) of owners said they take their pets along because it ensures they will stay active on holiday, but one in three (31 per cent) said they 'couldn't bear the thought of leaving them at home' and would miss them too much. Another factor is that veterinary services are considerably cheaper on the Continent. An investigation by The Times in 2023 found that some procedures are up to three times more expensive in the UK than in France. • 13 of the best dog-friendly Airbnbs in the UK The Co-op says owners need to be careful when travelling abroad with pets because most standard insurance policies do not cover them for emergency treatment overseas. Andrew Nevitt, of Co-op Insurance, said: 'If you are taking your pet abroad, it's important that you ensure you have the correct documentation and they have had the necessary vaccines.' He added: 'Having the right insurance policy in place is also crucial as it will provide you with peace of mind that, should your pet require any treatment, any vet bills will be covered.'

Aussie influencer sparks split rumours after unfollowing boyfriend on Instagram just weeks after celebrating their daughter's first birthday

Aussie influencer Lauren Bullen has sparked rumours of a split from her French partner Liam, just weeks after celebrating their daughter's first birthday. The travel blogger, known to her millions of followers as gypsea_lust, has noticeably unfollowed Liam on Instagram - and he appears to have returned the favour. The pair, who are based in Bali, haven't been seen together on social media in recent months, prompting fans to speculate their relationship may be over. It wouldn't be the first time the couple have parted ways. They previously broke up around 18 months before announcing they were expecting their daughter, Lumae, in March last year. At the time, Bullen addressed the break-up in an emotional Instagram post. 'I'm far from ready [to talk about this] but Liam and I are no longer together,' she told followers. 'I know the majority of you come from a place of loving and caring, but I'm reminded every time I open Instagram to see your messages,' she continued. 'I shared so much of my relationships so I know I somewhat owe an explanation.' The couple reunited before the birth of their daughter, and celebrated little Lumae's first birthday just last month. But their recent social media activity - or lack thereof - has led fans to question whether they've gone their separate ways once again. Lauren has not publicly addressed the rumours. She last made headlines in 2023 after being labelled 'tone deaf' for complaining about cancelled flights during a volcanic eruption in Bali. Bullen had been living in Bali with Liam and their daughter Lumaé Rose. They had organised a trip to Australia this week but were unable to travel as Jetstar and Virgin Australia cancelled all flights due to ash clouds from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in Indonesia. 'Anyone have info on flight cancellations in Bali? I have a very important weekend in Australia,' she wrote. 'I need to get to Australia by Friday for my bestie's bachelorette. So I have to just wait and reassess tonight or tomorrow and then somehow wrangle a ticket because right now prices have rocketed to $2-3K a person economy.' Fans slammed the influencer for her 'extremely tone deaf' post after it was re-shared to the Influencer Updates AU Instagram page. Lauren has built a successful career off her curated travel content and dreamy lifestyle photos, but fans have noticed her personal life has taken a backseat online in recent months. Bullen has been approached for comment.
