KUALA LUMPUR: The police have stepped up patrols near the embassies of the United States and Iran following the ongoing conflict between the two countries.
Wangsa Maju OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Lazim Ismail said police have increased their presence near the embassies since the conflict between the two countries started.
'We are focused on increasing our presence near both locations to deter any untoward incidents from happening. So far, the situation is under control,' he said when contacted yesterday.
'Our action going forward will depend on the development of the conflict between the two countries,' he added.
He advised the public not to resort to any rash action that is against the law.
'The public should refrain from taking any action that might jeopardise the safety of others. Stern action will be taken against any lawbreakers,' ACP Mohamad Lazim said.
It was previously reported that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Malaysian political leaders stood together in their condemnation of the military strikes by the United States on Iran, describing the attacks as a violation of international law and a threat to global stability.
The leaders are calling for immediate international action, including interventions by the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
During a function in Kuching on Sunday, Anwar urged the international community to apply pressure on Israel to stop its aggressive actions.
He said lasting peace could only be achieved if Israel ceases its violent conduct towards other countries.
PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang urged the UN Security Council and the OIC to take firm action to stop what he called an uncivilised act of aggression.
He warned that failure to act could further destabilise the Middle East and endanger prospects for global peace.
US President Donald Trump said early Sunday that his forces bombed three Iranian nuclear sites in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan.
The attacks marked the latest escalation in a US-backed Israeli military assault against Iran that began on June 13, which in turn prompted Teheran to initiate retaliatory strikes against Israel.

A glimpse into a life of nomadic resilience

PUTRAJAYA: A symbol of nomadic resilience and cultural heritage took centre stage here yesterday as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Zhaparov, attended a traditional Kyrgyz Yurt ceremony on the sidelines of the latter's official visit to Malaysia. The ceremony featured the Boz Ui, a traditional Kyrgyz yurt, which captivated the Malaysian audience with its unique circular structure, felt coverings and timber framework, an enduring testament to the ingenuity of Kyrgyz nomadic life, Bernama reported. Literally translated as 'Gray House' in the Kyrgyz language, the Boz Ui has for centuries served as the primary shelter for Kyrgyz herders traversing the expansive steppes, valleys and mountainous regions of Central Asia. Both Anwar and Zhaparov stepped into the Boz Ui together, accompanied by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Putrajaya Corporation president Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud, marking a moment of cultural exchange and solidarity. Designed for seasonal migration, the yurt is both functional and symbolic, durable enough to withstand extreme weather yet portable enough to be dismantled and reassembled as families follow their livestock across pastures. The ceremony offered a rare glimpse into the lifestyle of the Kyrgyz people and served as a gesture of friendship and mutual appreciation between the two nations. The ceremony was part of Zhaparov's two-day maiden official visit to Malaysia to reciprocate Anwar's official trip to the Kyrgyz Republic in May 2024. Zhaparov's visit also saw both nations signing a series of memoranda of understanding (MOUs) and exchange of notes (EoN) in areas such as tourism, health, higher education, digital transformation and cybersecurity. The three MOUs on tourism, digital transformation and cybersecurity, and trade were exchanged by Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan with Kyrgyz Republic's Minister of Economy and Commerce Bakyt Sydykov and Minister of Digital Development and Innovative Technologies Azamat Jamangulov. Mohamad also exchanged two EoNs in the field of training of diplomats and youth as well as one letter of intent for a treaty on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters with his counterpart Zheenbek Kulubaev and Kyrgyz Republic's Minister of Culture, Information and Youth Policy Mirbek Mambetaliev. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir exchanged the MOU in the field of higher education with Kyrgyz Republic's Minister of Science, Higher Education and Innovation Baktyiar Orozov, while the MOU on health was exchanged between Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and his counterpart Erkin Checheibaev. Two additional MOUs were exchanged between the National Institute for Strategic Initiatives under the President of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia, and between the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic.

North Korea opens landmark coastal Wonsan tourist zone

SEOUL: North Korea has completed construction of a massive tourist zone on its east coast, state media reported on Thursday, a key project driven by leader Kim Jong Un for years to promote tourism. With "great satisfaction", Kim attended an inaugural ceremony for the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area that could accommodate about 20,000 visitors and said the country would build more large-scale tourist zones swiftly, KCNA news agency said. Kim has been rebuilding the seaside city of Wonsan, a holiday destination for locals, to turn it into a billion-dollar tourist hotspot. Development plans for Wonsan have mushroomed since they were first announced in 2014. However, while tourism is one of a narrow range of cash sources for North Korea not targeted by United Nations sanctions, the reclusive state did not have a major foreign partner for the Wonsan project against the backdrop of sanctions over its weapons programmes. The tourist zone will open for domestic guests from July 1, KCNA said, without mentioning foreign tourists. North Korea sealed its borders in 2020 at the start of the pandemic but has been slowly lifting restrictions since 2023. It has allowed Russian tourist groups into the country but its capital and other parts of the country remain closed to regular tourism, though in April it held a marathon event hosting foreign runners. Moscow and Pyongyang, both economically and politically isolated, have drawn closer as North Korea has deployed thousands of fighters and supplied ammunition, artillery and missiles for Russia's Ukraine war. The Russian ambassador to North Korea and embassy staff were invited as special guests for the Wonsan ceremony, according to KCNA. The two countries have agreed to expand cooperation on tourism, restarting a direct passenger train service between their capitals for the first time since 2020. "Kim Jong Un expressed belief that the wave of the happiness to be raised in the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area would enhance its attractive name as a world-level tourist cultural resort," KCNA said.
