Beloved singer, 83, cancels concerts after suffering 'chronic and intense pain'
A beloved singer has been forced to cancel shows after facing 'unimaginable' pain that 'demanded immediate attention'.
Paul Simon rose to fame in the 1960s as part of the duo Simon & Garfunkel alongside school friend Art Garkfunkel.
After gaining a legion of fans releasing songs like The Sound of Silence and Bridge over Troubled Water, the American singer- songwriter went on to pursue a career as a solo artist in the 1970s.
Throughout his career, Paul has won 16 Grammy Awards and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, realising his most recent album Seven Psalms in 2023.
In April he kicked off his A Quiet Celebration Tour, which began in New Orleans and will travel throughout North America and Canada before ending in Seattle in August.
However, this weekend he had to pull the plug on two performances just a few hours in advance due to ongoing health issues.
Posting a statement online, his team explained that the 83-year-old could no longer play his scheduled shows at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia.
'Paul has been struggling with chronic and intense back pain,' it began. 'Today it became unmanageable and demands immediate attention. Unfortunately, we have to cancel these shows at this time, as we don't have the ability to reschedule them.'
'However, we are hopeful after this minor surgical procedure which has been scheduled in the next few days, Paul will be able to complete the tour as well as look into returning to make up these dates.
'In the meantime, please go to your point of purchase or local ticket provider for a full refund.'
Paul is next set to play at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center's Terrace Theater in Long Beach, California on July 7.
His tour features the live debut of his Grammy-nominated album, Seven Psalms, along with a 'celebration of his timeless classics'.
However when it was announced earlier this year, it was explained that he'd chosen 'intimate venues with optimal acoustics for this tour' as he had been dealing with 'severe hearing loss'.
The musician had previously announced his retirement from touring in 2018 due to hearing loss.
At the time he explained: 'I've often wondered what it would feel like to reach the point where I'd consider bringing my performing career to a natural end. Now I know it feels a little unsettling, a touch exhilarating and something of a relief.
'I love making music, my voice is still strong, and my band is a tight, extraordinary group of gifted musicians. I think about music constantly.' More Trending
Last year he explained he's now lost 94% of hearing in his left ear and has been told by doctors that there is no cure, which has also left him unable to play certain songs from his catalogue, including his 1986 hit You Can Call Me Al.
'I'm going through my repertoire and reducing a lot of the choices that I make to acoustic versions,' he said on CBS Mornings. 'It's all much quieter. It's not You Can Call Me Al, that's gone. I can't do that one.'
'I guess what I'm most apprehensive about would be if I can't hear well enough to really enjoy the act of making music.'

‘US podcasters' comments in no way reflect the Belfast I know and love': Deputy Lord Mayor on Cancelled co-hosts branding city ‘violent' and ‘crazy'
Tana Mongeau and Brooke Schofield are best known for their Cancelled podcast, where they share their unfiltered opinions on pop culture and often host 'cancelled' public figures. But the pair weren't impressed when they visited the city in May as part of their podcast tour. Speaking on their podcast, they said Belfast was 'crazy' and 'violent'. But Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast Paul Doherty has dismissed their remarks. 'These comments in no way reflect the Belfast I know and love,' he said. In their podcast, Brooke (28) said their trip began with witnessing a brawl between Celtic and Rangers fans, following a 1-1 draw in the Old Firm clash at Ibrox, outside a Belfast airport. 'We saw the most violent fight ever, the second we landed in Ireland. I think we were in Belfast,' she explained. 'It was over soccer. And first of all, it was funny — we were like 'haha'. I have a video and it looks like they are swinging in slow motion. They were obviously, clearly, drunk old men. 'We were laughing about it, because we were like: 'What is going on? Everyone is fighting.' 'And then all of a sudden one guy gets punched and gets knocked out so bad he hits his head so hard on the pavement. I was like: 'I think he just died.'' 'There were so many fights on the street in Belfast,' Tana (26) then told listeners. 'Paige [Camerlin, their friend] was walking down the street and she saw someone chugging a bottle of wine on their knees. [They] took the bottle away, popped a handful of pills, kept chugging. Belfast was crazy.' Brooke then described an encounter at their hotel that led her to believe that people in Belfast are 'violent'. 'We were taking our luggage out, putting a luggage cart out on the street, and some lady went by. I'm waving at her baby and she goes: 'God, you stupid f****** c****.' 'I was like: 'Oh, my God! They are so violent here.'' In response, Mr Doherty said Belfast is a great city, adding: 'What I see every day is not chaos — it's compassion. 'This is a city where people look out for one another, step up in times of need and pull together in solidarity. 'At Foodstock, I've worked with communities across Belfast through some of the toughest times, and what always shines through is our resilience, our humour and our kindness. 'That's the Belfast I am proud to call my home. 'Belfast is a city of artists, musicians, storytellers and community builders who inspire people the world over. To reduce us to tired stereotypes is lazy and wrong. 'People here will give you directions, a story, a laugh, and even the coat off their back. 'We're known the world over for our hospitality and warm welcome — and rightly so.' However, it wasn't just Belfast where the girls felt uncomfortable: Tana said she felt that European culture in general is less friendly than American culture. 'People just culturally don't do the same thing,' she said. 'Like, I think in America, when you catch someone staring at you, you smile and they smile back and they look away. People don't do that here.' Yet the podcasters said they thoroughly enjoyed their show here, praising their audiences in Belfast and further afield. 'In Ireland and Scotland, it feels like we have a strong community there,' Brooke said. 'Yes, the Ireland shows were so incredible,' Tana agreed. 'It was so cute. You'd notice in the audience girls [who] came alone, and by the end of the show they'd joined groups of friends. 'You could just see people making friends and holding hands. It was so sweet.'

Glastonbury fans fume act 'on wrong stage' and call for Olivia Rodrigo switch
Glastonbury fans were divided by the stage set up during Sunday night as some thought Olivia Rodrigo's headline Pyramid Stage set should have been replaced by another act Some Glastonbury fans shared their frustration over the stage set up during the final performances of the 2025 festival. Pop star Olivia Rodrigo landed the role of closing this year's event on the Pyramid Stage. She performed to a massive crowd as fans flocked to see the American star perform her hits such as Drivers License and Good 4 U. While she took to the iconic stage, The Prodigy also performed on the Other Stage. They also attracted a major crowd as the two artists have a very different fan base. However, some fans thought Olivia and the Prodigy should have switched stages. One fan fumed: "Prodigy should have been on the main stage, Olivia Rodrigo should have been relegated to this one!" Another added: "Here's a thought, The Prodigy right now, headliners of main stage maybe?? Swap old man Young for this awesome madness." Someone else commented: "The prodigy are utterly smashing this up, unreal. Should be on pyramid. Daft. One of the best live I've ever seen, just pure insanity for 90 minutes." However, a fourth teased: "The Prodigy fans kicking off because the BBC are showing Olivia Rodrigo instead. Call your kids and ask them to explain how iPlayer works x." Olivia, 22, rose to global fame for her hit single, Driver's License, topping the charts along with her songs Vampire and Good 4 You. The former Disney star previously performed at Glastonbury's Other Stage in 2022, going viral for bringing out British singer Lily Allen. They sang Lily's hit single, F*** You, after the pop-star condemned the US Supreme Court for overturning Roe v Wade and allowing individual US states to ban abortion. "I'm devastated and terrified that so many women and so many girls are going to die because of this," Olivia said on stage ahead of singing with Lily. "I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have showed us that at the end of the day, they truly don't care about freedom." Olivia revealed headlining Glastonbury was a "dream" for her. Posting on her Instagram story, the singer said: 'Headlining glasto has been one of my biggest dreams for so long. Truly can't believe this! So grateful and sooo excited. Hope to see you there.' Before her music career, she was an actor on Disney Channel, starring in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as well as the television series Bizaardvark, which follows two best friends as they create music videos and share vlogs on their website.

Taking to the stage in a short white corseted dress, the American looked in awe of the sheer volume of people who had came to see her on the Pyramid Stage. However, it was a surprise guest appearance that had fans gobsmacked. The American singer songwriter welcomed singer-songwriter Robert Smith to perform a double of duets. And it was their performance of Friday I'm In Love that had fans gasping. Prior to her huge closing set, Olivia spoke to the XM CBS channel in the United States. She explained how she sees Morissette and No Doubt frontman turned solo artist Gwen Stefani as a great inspiration for longevity in music. She said:"I love Alanis. She's so gracious too. I look at her and I talk to her and I'm like, that's how I want to live my life. I feel like she's got it right. "With Gwen I really love he way that she sort of straddled rock and pop in a really cool way. I think she's super adventurous and takes risks, so I really look up to her. But who's to say, I don't know. I don't know where I'm going to be tomorrow, let alone in five years.' She also teased a potential venture away from music in the near future. "I love telling stories in songs, and if there was a story that I felt like really resonated with me in a film, I would love to do that too," she said. "I don't quite know yet, but I'm very open to it."
