Yemeni coffee nominated for UNESCO heritage status
Non-profit organisation Qima Foundation has led the charge in an effort to gain UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Status for Yemeni coffee.
The Foundation, sister organisation of social enterprise Qima Coffee, says the move is a 'landmark step for the global coffee industry'.
The nomination was formally submitted by Yemen's Permanent Delegate to UNESCO Dr Mohammed Jumeh, and was developed by Qima Foundation alongside the country's Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.
'This is a historic moment for Yemen and for the coffee world. For centuries, Yemeni coffee has been a pillar of global coffee culture, and this nomination is a powerful recognition of the farmers and communities who have carried this legacy forward,' says Faris Sheibani, Founder and Trustee of Qima Foundation.
'We are honoured to have led this effort and to help safeguard one of the most significant cultural heritages in coffee.'
The submission details the rich cultural traditions, indigenous knowledge, and ancient agricultural practices of Yemen's coffee heritage. It also covers the extensive research undertaken by Qima Foundation.
'This nomination is a milestone on the path towards international recognition of Yemeni coffee as both a cultural and economic symbol,' says Dr Jumeh.
'It is an inheritance that stretches back centuries, with Yemen's historic ports, especially Mocha, serving as the original gateway for coffee to reach the world.'
This is the first time Yemeni coffee has been nominated for UNESCO heritage status. As of December 2024, UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list fetures 788 cultural practices in 150 countries.

Yemen's Houthis "warn" companies to leave Israel
The Houthis yesterday renewed their warning to all firms investing in Israel, urging them to leave immediately or risk bearing full responsibility for any potential losses. Mahdi Al-Mashat, president of the Supreme Political Council — the highest governing authority in the Houthi-led administration in Sanaa — called on all companies investing in Israel to take the Yemeni warning seriously and to withdraw quickly, stressing that the environment is no longer safe. His remarks were reported by Houthi-run media. 'Companies that remain in the Zionist entity after our warning will have to bear the consequences of their insistence and be held accountable for any losses they may incur,' he added. 'We may take additional decisions in the coming days, if necessary, which would place investment companies within the Zionist entity at real and serious risk.' 'The disregard shown by some investment firms for our forces' warnings makes their operations inside the entity a dangerous gamble, which could come at a heavy cost,' Al-Mashat added. He accused the Israeli occupation government of failing to protect the interests of private companies, saying: 'The criminal Netanyahu government does not care about the safety of investment companies. It gambles with their security to serve its own interests. A government that ignores the lives of its own captives will certainly not care about the safety of others' companies and investments.'

Due to Yemeni Forces' Blockade: Revenues from Israeli Port of Eilat Collapsed by 80% in 2024
Occupied al-Quds- Saba: The Israeli newspaper "The Marker" revealed that revenues from the port of Eilat collapsed by 80% in 2024, after ships stopped docking there following the blockade imposed by Yemeni forces on maritime navigation in the Red Sea in support of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government will vote next Sunday on a draft resolution for compensation conditional on the payment of a debt of 3.2 million shekels accumulated by the port owners. The draft resolution reveals the extent of the damage to the port due to the blockade imposed by the Yemeni armed forces, which has prevented ships from sailing through the Red Sea, forcing them instead to circumnavigate Africa to reach Israel's Mediterranean ports, Ashdod and Haifa. From the beginning of 2025 to mid-May, only six ships docked at the port. The suspension of operations placed 21 employees on unpaid leave, compared to only 16 ships docked last year. In 2023, port revenues reached NIS 212 million. In 2024, they decreased by approximately 80%, reaching NIS 42 million, compared to 134 ships docking at the port in 2023.
