Venezuela stuns Argentina with late home run in Chengdu World Games softball opener
CHENGDU, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela opened its men's softball campaign at The World Games 2025 with a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Argentina on Wednesday, thanks to a clutch two-run homer by infielder Pedro Flores in the final inning. The action took place under intense heat on the first competition day of the Games in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province. The challenging conditions took a toll, with one technical official collapsing from heat exhaustion during the afternoon game. Venezuela struggled to find their rhythm for most of the contest, but a towering shot to center field by Flores in the final inning turned the tide. Franklin Benitez scored on the play, sealing the narrow victory. "I think the pitcher was just trying to find the strike zone, then missed, and I took the chance. The home run came," Flores said. "We know every game here is going to be tough, but we take it one game at a time and try to go as far as we can." Venezuela entered Chengdu riding high after their title run at the WBSC Men's Softball World Cup in July in Canada, where they defeated New Zealand 3-0 in the final. "We were also in Canada just a month ago, and I hit a home run there too," Flores added. "Our goal here is to win the gold medal. We know the level is high because every team here has World Cup experience, but we feel no pressure." In other action, Singapore edged Australia 10-9. Earlier Wednesday, the scheduled opening games between the United States and Canada, and the Czech Republic and Japan were postponed due to flight-related issues. Men's softball is making a return to the World Games stage after first appearing at the inaugural edition in Santa Clara, California, in 1981. Now, 44 years later, the sport is back as one of the key competitions at this global multi-sport event. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams, featuring 240 athletes, are competing in Chengdu. The softball tournament is also the longest event on the World Games schedule, running for 10 days with 40 matches. The men's gold medal game is set for August 10, while the women's competition will take place from August 13 to 17.

Article content Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham appeared to have been grazed by a dildo thrown during action in Tuesday's game against the Sparks in Los Angeles. Article content The incident occurred late in the second quarter after the Sparks scored a basket and the Fever prepared to inbound the ball. Article content Article content As Cunningham approached the free-throw line, the object hit the floor and appeared to graze the forward's leg. She hopped up on one foot and held up her arms as she began to realize what had happened. Article content Sparks star Kelsey Plum then walked up to the bright-green object and kicked it off the court. Article content SOPHIE CUNNINGHAM GOT HIT BY A DILDO 😭 — BricksCenter (@BricksCenter) August 6, 2025 Article content Article content The players did seem to get a kick out of the situation, as Cunningham was seen laughing with members of the Sparks by the L.A. bench. Article content Cunningham had been one of several WNBA stars to speak out about the lurid objects being thrown on the court, worrying that someone could end up hurt. Article content 'Stop throwing dildos on the court,' she posted on social media site X last week. 'You're going to hurt one of us.' Article content However, Cunningham seemed to take the latest incident in stride, replying to the tweet earlier Wednesday morning with the comment: 'this did NOT age well.' Article content this did NOT age well. — Sophie Cunningham (@sophaller) August 6, 2025 Article content To make matters worse, the incident in L.A. wasn't even the only time that a sex toy hit the hardwood on Tuesday night. Article content During the game between the Dallas Wings and New York Liberty, another bright-green sex toy was thrown, but it didn't reach the court and landed at a fan's feet, according to a fan video. Article content So it was supposed to be 2 coordinated green dildo attacks tonight. This one at the Wings vs Liberty game almost hit a kid and didn't reach the court smh 💀 — Hater Report (@HaterReport_) August 6, 2025 Article content Article content This worrying trend began last week, when a bright-green sex toy was thrown onto the court during a key moment in a game between the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries. Article content During the final minute of last Tuesday matchup with the game tied 75-75, the object appeared to have been thrown from the stands, landing on the floor near the play before bouncing towards the sidelines. Article content Add another to the list of all-time WILD #WNBA, this time courtesy of a strange fan. With the Valkyries-Dream game tied at 75-75 under a minute left, some fan threw what appeared to be a green dildo toy onto the court. Yes, you read EXACTLY right😶🫥💀 🎥 @sluggahjells — The Whole Delivery (@TWDTV1) July 30, 2025 Article content Article content Perhaps the oddest thing about the incident was that the refs didn't immediately blow the whistle despite the item landing near several players. The officials waited until the ball went out of bounds before stopping play to have it removed. Article content A 23-year-old man identified as Delbert Carver, according to multiple reports, was arrested for throwing an object. Article content According to he was charged with disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure and criminal trespass. Article content New York forward Isabelle Harrison told the New York Post that the objects present a safety issue that players should not have to deal with. Article content 'I think you just have to continuously prioritize the players, because it's obviously safety, but also just so immature to me, like, I just hate that that's being attached to our brand and our name,' Harrison said. 'This is like, let's be professional here. I get the jokes, and things can be funny, but it just gets to a point. Lindsey Vonn hires former ski great Aksel Lund Svindal as coach ahead of Olympic season
KENNELBACH, Austria (AP) — Lindsey Vonn has added former ski great Aksel Lund Svindal to her coaching team as she prepares for next year's Winter Olympics. The 40-year-old American skier, who won the gold medal in the downhill at the 2010 Games, returned to the sport last year with a new titanium knee and plans on competing at the Milan-Cortina Olympics in Italy from Feb. 6-22. Vonn had to cut her career short in 2019 due to a series of crashes and injuries, but then she had two titanium pieces inserted into her right knee before her comeback. Svindal, a two-time Olympic champion, will begin coaching Vonn at a training camp in Chile later this summer, according to a statement released Wednesday by Head, her equipment supplier. 'To have him officially on my team as we push for the Cortina Games is a huge boost,' said the 82-time World Cup winner. 'This comeback is about pushing boundaries and proving what's possible, and I believe Aksel will help give me the extra edge I will need on this ambitious journey. I am grateful to have him on my team and I couldn't ask for a better partner.' Svindal won four Olympic medals and is a five-time world champion. He retired after winning silver in the downhill in his final race at the 2019 world championships. He said he was 'a bit surprised when Lindsey called me, but mostly honored.' Vonn concluded her comeback season with a second-place finish in a World Cup super-G in March. It was her first World Cup podium spot since March 15, 2018, when she finished third in a super-G. A year later, she earned downhill bronze at the world championships. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP skiing:
