Fatal mishap with explosive drone leaves 2 police officers dead in Haiti
Two Haitian police officers were killed and two others seriously wounded when an explosive drone accidentally detonated at a SWAT base near Haiti's capital, authorities in the Caribbean nation said on Wednesday.
Directed by Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, a task force has since March been operating explosive-laden "kamikaze" drones to help police fight powerful armed gangs that have taken control of most of the capital.
A private military company run by Blackwater founder Erik Prince is also taking part in the drone operations.
The prime minister's office said in a statement the accident took place on Tuesday night in the hillside town of Kenscoff — a flashpoint in the conflict due to its strategic location overlooking the diplomatic hub of Petion-Ville.
"A kamikaze drone, transported by residents in good faith, exploded on the site, killing two police officers and seriously injuring two others," his office said in a statement.
Citing several unnamed sources, the Miami Herald reported that six officers were hurt in the blast. The prime minister's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Local residents found the drone after its operators lost contact with the device due to poor weather, it reported, and brought it to nearby police. Shortly after, it exploded.

"We are taking all measures to ensure a thorough investigation into this tragedy," Fritz Alphonse Jean, a member of Haiti's transitional presidential council, said on social media.
Jean had recently served as the head of the transitional presidential council until Laurent Saint-Cyr moved into that role earlier this month.
Armed groups began attacking Kenscoff at the start of this year. Rights groups report mass killings, rapes, arson and kidnappings, and thousands have fled their homes. Earlier this month, a three-year-old boy and seven staff were kidnapped from a local orphanage, including Irish missionary Gena Heraty.
Over 3,100 have been killed in the conflict in the first half of this year, according to UN reports.
Some outside parties — including Canada's government — have voiced qualms about Haiti's use of drones to push back against the gangs.
Canada provided surveillance drones to help protect police in their duties in Haiti, Global Affairs Canada told CBC News last month.
But the Canadian-provided drones were not of a type designed for lethal use, according to the federal government.

Manitoba RCMP believe a missing Norwegian hiker who went missing last week was swept away in a fast-moving river. The backpack and rifle belonging to a Norwegian adventurer who went missing in northern Manitoba have been found, police say. An RCMP spokesperson told CTV News they are continuing to search the area for any trace of Steffen Skjottelvik, 23. 6 bodies recovered from Colorado dairy but no details released about the deaths

Rescue crews entered a confined space at the dairy Wednesday and recovered the bodies, the Southeast Weld Fire Protection District said. Weld County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Melissa Chesmore said her agency also responded Wednesday to an emergency at the dairy. 'We didn't find anything criminal in nature,' she said. 'It looks like an accident.' She didn't elaborate on the nature of the emergency or say where exactly the bodies were found, referring questions to state occupational safety regulators. Man, 77, found dead after boat capsized in Lake Winnipeg on Wednesday
A 77-year-old Winnipeg man was found dead on Wednesday, less than two hours after a capsized boat was discovered in Lake Winnipeg, police say. RCMP received a report about the capsized boat in the lake, about two kilometres northwest of the Balsam Harbour Marina on the southeastern shore, shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said in a news release. Shortly before 6 p.m., members of the East Beaches Fire Department found the body of the 77-year-old Winnipeg man who had operated the boat, just a short distance away from the vessel. The man was pronounced dead, police said. He was still wearing a life-jacket. The RCMP investigation into the man's death continues.
