Trump's New Cash Grab Is a Gold iPhone Lookalike That's Worse Than Any Budget Android

Gizmodo7 hours ago

If there's one thing we've learned over the years, it's that President Donald J. Trump loves two things: gold furniture and using his status as U.S. president to make money. And now, to everyone's detriment, Trump is apparently combining those two passions into a mobile device that you can buy with real American tender. It gives me no pleasure to introduce to you all: the Trump phone.
🚨BREAKING: The Trump family is LAUCHING a "Trump Phone" the phones will be made in the USA 🇺🇸

The T1, as Trump's family is calling it, will launch alongside an all-new mobile network, Trump Mobile, and comes with an aptly named '47 Plan,' which costs an even more apt $47.45 per month. You can use Trump Mobile with your existing device, apparently, but why would you do that if you could show everyone your appreciation for fascism with a whole-ass gold phone? Trump is also claiming the T1 will be 'made in the USA,' though I have doubts there's much truth to that. At most, it'll be assembled in America. There's a reason why Apple—with all of its resources—can't just make iPhones in America overnight or even within a few years.
Here's a statement from President Trump himself on the launch of the phone:
'Trump Mobile is going to change the game, we're building on the movement to put America first, and we will deliver the highest levels of quality and service. Our company is based right here in the United States because we know it's what our customers want and deserve.'
This isn't Trump's first attempt at a cash grab that leverages his status and fame as POTUS—he's already peddled gaudy gold sneakers, crypto, and NFTs—but for me, the T1 is by far the most egregious. Phones aren't just another product; they're a gateway into everything you do, say, and think. While Trump's team unsurprisingly doesn't mention privacy one single time in its announcement of the T1, there are lots of inherent concerns there. The good news is that this phone is so bad I don't really think most people, outside of Trump's diehard supporters, will be tempted to buy it, let alone use it every day.
Here's a list of quick facts about the $500 T1: It has a below-average 5,000mAh battery that Trump's team accidentally calls a 'long life camera' and there are no details on the processor, though if it's as quick as the person who wrote the press materials, I'm going to assume that it's not great. There's a tri-camera system with no ultrawide, though it does have a 50-megapixel main sensor and what can only be garbage 2-megapixel depth and macro cameras.
Oh, and the T1 runs Android 15. There's no mention of what apps are pre-installed, but if I were to guess… it's probably Truth Social. I'll grant you one free silent cry today in remembrance of a time before blatant conflicts of interest in the White House.
The phone, if it wasn't a depressing reminder that our country has no standards anymore, would be fine, but for obvious reasons, it's not that, so I've gone ahead and made a list of all the things I'd sooner buy over the Trump phone:
A mouthful of bees.
A massage from a fistful of poison ivy.
A five-night stay on Riker's Island.
A colonoscopy with no sedation.
A bath in molten lava.
A Cybertruck… Actually, that one is debatable.
I don't think anyone should buy this phone for lots of reasons, but one of the main reasons is it just doesn't seem like a good deal. There are tons of nice mid-range phones out there that are doing a lot more, and there's no reason for you to buy a stunt phone that will probably end up unsupported and underserved faster than you can misspell 'coverage' as 'covfefe.' That being said, if you suck, you can pre-order this device right now.

"Turning up the propaganda hose to full blast": Carlson attacks Fox News in Bannon interview

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson blasted his former employer on Monday, criticizing their decision to offer a show to broadcaster Mark Levin. Speaking to former Trump advisor Steve Bannon on his "Bannon's War Room" podcast, Carlson said that Levin was "screechy" and "not a calming presence." He suggested that Levin received his position due to pressure from Fox News host Sean Hannity. "Levin's the funniest because he's terrible on TV, and again, I never had any problems with him at Fox. He kind of controls Hannity in this weird way. I never understood what that was about. I never really cared to learn,' Carlson said. "Sean pushed, and they gave him some kind of weekend show that nobody watched.' Carlson said that Levin's show was like "listening to your ex-wife scream about alimony payments" and suggested that he's seeing increased airtime because Fox News is trying to lay the groundwork for American intervention in the Israel-Iran conflict. "What they're doing is what they always do, which is just turning up the propaganda hose to full blast and just trying to, you know, knock elderly Fox viewers off their feet and make them submit to where you want them to," he said. On Friday, Carlson accused Levin, Hannity, and Rupert Murdoch of being 'warmongers' for pushing President Donald Trump to involve the U.S. in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. On Monday, Carlson cautioned the Trump administration against choosing a side. "I'm really afraid that my country's gonna be further weakened by this. I think we're gonna see the end of the American empire,' he said. Trump responded to Carlson while speaking to reporters on Monday, calling the former agenda-setter irrelevant. "I don't know what Tucker Carlson is saying," he said. "Let him go get a television network and say it so that people listen."

US news consumers are turning to podcaster Joe Rogan and away from traditional sources, report shows

By Helen Coster (Reuters) -Prominent podcasters like Joe Rogan are playing a bigger role in news dissemination in the United States, as are AI chatbots, contributing to the further erosion of traditional media, according to a report released on Tuesday. In the week following the January 2025 U.S. presidential inauguration, more Americans said they got their news from social and video networks than from TV and news websites and apps - the first time that shift has occurred, the report said. Traditional U.S. news media increasingly risks being eclipsed by online personalities and creators, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism said in its annual Digital News Report, which is based on an online survey of almost 100,000 people in 48 markets, including the United States. The trend is particularly acute among young Americans. Over half of people under age 35 in the U.S. are relying on social media and video networks as their main source for news, the report found. Across the countries that the report surveyed, 44% of people aged 18 to 24 said these networks are their main source of news. One-fifth of a sampled group of Americans came across news or commentary from podcaster Rogan in the week following the presidential inauguration, the report found, while 14% of respondents said they had come across former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson discussing or commenting on news during that period. Carlson now generates content across multiple social media and video networks. Top creators during that period also included Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens and Ben Shapiro on the political right, and Brian Tyler Cohen and David Pakman on the left. The vast majority of the most followed commentators who discuss politics are men, the report found. 'These are not just big numbers in themselves,' wrote Nic Newman, Senior Research Associate at the Oxford, UK-based Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. 'These creators are also attracting audiences that traditional media struggle to reach. Some of the most popular personalities over-index with young men, with right-leaning audiences, and with those that have low levels of trust in mainstream media outlets, seeing them as biased or part of a liberal elite.' Despite their popularity, online influencers and personalities are seen as the biggest sources of false or misleading information worldwide, along with politicians, the report found. In the United States, politicians are considered the biggest sources of false or misleading information. Over 70% of Americans say they remain concerned about their ability to tell what is true from what is false when it comes to news online, a similar proportion to last year. That compared to 58% across all of the surveyed markets. AI is another emerging theme in news consumption, particularly for young people. Of respondents under age 25, 15% rely on AI chatbots and interfaces for news each week, compared to 7% of respondents overall, the report found. ChatGPT was the most mentioned AI service for news, followed by Google's Gemini and Meta AI. The trend is raising concerns about a potential loss of search referral traffic to publisher websites and apps, the report found, as chatbots eliminate the need for users to click on a story link. Text remains the most preferred way for people worldwide to consume news, although around a third say they prefer to watch the news online and 15% say they prefer to listen. Younger people are much more likely to prefer watching or listening to the news. Social media platform X, formerly Twitter, is also becoming a more popular source of news in the United States, particularly among right-leaning users and young men, with 23% of sampled Americans consuming news there - up 8 percentage points from last year. Rival networks like Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon are struggling to gain traction globally, with reach of 2% or less for news. Levels of trust in news across markets are currently stable at 40%, and unchanged for the last three years, the report found.
