Scientists stunned after rare species makes historic return to former habitat: 'It's hard to describe the feeling'

After making a historic comeback to the wild last year, the Guam kingfisher seems to be adjusting well to its new habitat.
According to Smithsonian Magazine, scientists discovered nests with eggs on Palmyra Atoll, the kingfishers' home for the time being. Martin Kastner, a biologist who worked on the reintroduction project, told Public Radio Guam why this was so monumental.
"These birds were raised in captivity until last year," he said of the kingfishers, which had been extinct in the wild since 1988. "Now they're foraging, nesting and even laying eggs on their own. It's an incredible step forward."
This is a step forward not only for the kingfishers but also for the entire planet — humans included. Every species plays a key role in maintaining biodiversity. Without a variety of life, ecosystems can get thrown out of balance, depleting natural resources such as fresh water, lumber, and medicines that humans rely on.
The Guam kingfishers' return is a definite cause for celebration.
Kastner shared in an ecstatic Instagram post that three mated pairs are currently incubating eggs, with a fourth showing signs that an egg might be on the way. In the fall, nine more kingfishers will be released onto Palmyra Atoll, with the long-term goal of reintroduction to their native habitat of Guam.
Such a goal is not completely unprecedented.
A South African family rewilded 67,000 acres of farmland, reintroducing big cats to the area for the first time in decades. In Saudi Arabia, the Persian onager was reintroduced to the wild after a century of absence from the country.
With conservationists' continued dedication, there's hope for the Guam kingfisher yet.
As Kastner wrote on Instagram about the newly discovered eggs, "It's hard to describe the feeling at that moment, when decades of expectation and effort by zookeepers, biologists, administrators, and most importantly the people of Guam, coalesce in an instant of joy and hope."
Should the U.S. invest in building more wildlife overpasses?
Absolutely
Depends on how we do it
Depends on where we do it
Nope

Ernst doubles down on Medicaid comment with sarcastic video ‘apology'

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) doubled down on a recent quip about Medicaid in a Saturday post on her Instagram story. 'Hello, everyone. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologize for a statement that I made yesterday at my town hall,' Ernst said in the clip, with a sarcastic tone. On Friday, the Iowa Republican was jeered after brushing aside life or death concerns about cuts to Medicaid, a public health insurance program for low income families and individuals with disabilities. 'See I was in the process of answering a question that had been asked by an audience member, when a woman who was extremely distraught, screamed out from the back corner of the auditorium, people are going to die,' Ernst said Saturday. 'And I made an incorrect assumption that everyone in the auditorium understood that, yes, we are all going to perish from this earth. So I apologize, and I'm really, really glad that I did not have to bring up the subject of the tooth fairy as well,' she continued. The Iowa lawmaker then encouraged viewers who want to see 'eternal and everlasting life' to 'embrace' Jesus Christ. During her Friday event in Butler, Iowa, Ernst promised that Republicans would 'protect' social services for the most vulnerable. She suggested that those who work and have opportunity for benefits elsewhere 'receive those benefits elsewhere' and leave taxpayer dollars for those eligible for Medicaid. Under the current GOP-House passed spending bill, millions would lose access to healthcare if passed by the Senate. 'Children will get hurt. Women will get hurt. Older Americans who rely on Medicaid for nursing home care and for home care will get hurt. People with disabilities who rely on Medicaid to survive will get hurt,' House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said during the debate on the bill, according to Politico. 'Hospitals in your districts will close. Nursing homes will shut down. And people will die. That's not hype. That's not hyperbole. That's not a hypothetical,' he added. Every Democrat who voted in the House, voted against the bill. Some Senate Republicans have pledged to make some edits to the legislation, objecting to changes to Medicaid, the proposed phaseout of clean energy incentives and an increase in the federal debt.

The Influence of Social Trends on UK Vaping Habits and Sales

Social trends exert a profound influence on consumer habits, and the UK vaping market is no exception. Over recent years, shifts in societal attitudes, lifestyle preferences, and cultural movements have redefined vaping from a niche practice to a mainstream alternative to smoking. Understanding these social undercurrents is essential for businesses seeking to align their products and marketing strategies with evolving consumer expectations. From wellness culture to digital connectivity, social trends create both opportunities and challenges that shape vaping habits and, ultimately, sales performance. In the fast-paced world of vape retail, maintaining a steady supply of popular products is key to satisfying customer demand and staying competitive. Retailers are constantly seeking ways to improve margins and streamline operations without compromising on quality or variety. One effective strategy is to bulk buy vapes, allowing businesses to access lower unit prices, reduce shipping frequency, and ensure they always have top-selling items in stock. This approach not only improves profitability but also enhances customer satisfaction by minimizing out-of-stock scenarios. With the right wholesale partner, bulk purchasing becomes a smart and scalable solution for long-term growth. A dominant social trend influencing vaping is the increasing emphasis on health and wellness. As public awareness of the harmful effects of smoking has intensified, many UK consumers have turned to vaping as a perceived safer alternative. This shift is not merely about cessation but part of a broader lifestyle realignment prioritising wellbeing. Vape products that emphasize harm reduction, natural or organic ingredients, and reduced chemical exposure resonate with this health-conscious audience. Marketing narratives focusing on personal health improvement and empowerment bolster brand appeal and foster consumer loyalty. Social media platforms and online vaping communities have transformed how consumers discover, share, and engage with vaping products. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and vaping forums serve as hubs for product reviews, tutorials, and lifestyle content, significantly impacting purchasing decisions. Influencers and peer recommendations shape trends, popular flavours, and device preferences. User-generated content creates authenticity and fosters a sense of belonging among vapers. Brands leveraging these channels with transparent and engaging communication can amplify reach and deepen customer relationships. However, social media scrutiny and regulatory monitoring require companies to maintain ethical standards and compliance in digital marketing. Youth culture has historically driven trends in the vape market, influencing flavour innovation, device aesthetics, and marketing styles. While underage vaping is illegal in the UK, young adults remain a key demographic, with social trends in fashion, music, and entertainment often dictating their preferences. Brands must balance appealing to adult consumers with regulatory imperatives to avoid youth targeting. Social trends emphasizing individuality and self-expression can be channelled through customizable devices and flavour variety, catering to adult consumers seeking personal identity through vaping. Environmental consciousness has emerged as a pivotal social trend impacting vaping habits. Consumers increasingly demand sustainable products, including recyclable packaging, biodegradable materials, and energy-efficient devices. The disposable vape controversy has heightened awareness, prompting some users to switch to reusable or refillable options. Brands integrating sustainability into their product development and corporate social responsibility initiatives enhance their reputation and appeal to eco-aware consumers. Social acceptance of vaping has grown steadily, influenced by shifting norms and public health messaging. The normalization of vaping in social settings—cafés, workplaces, and public spaces—reduces stigma and encourages adoption. This evolving acceptance facilitates higher sales and market penetration. Nonetheless, pockets of resistance remain, particularly among older generations or communities with entrenched anti-vaping attitudes. Educating the public and fostering inclusive dialogue remain critical for sustained market growth. Lifestyle trends such as mobility, convenience, and personalization shape vaping product demand. Busy urban professionals and tech-savvy consumers prefer compact, discreet devices with fast charging and app integration. Similarly, premiumisation trends drive demand for high-quality materials, sophisticated design, and bespoke flavours. Social trends encouraging experiential consumption also fuel interest in vape lounges, events, and branded merchandise, creating ancillary revenue streams. The vaping market in the UK is expanding rapidly, with increasing demand for diverse and high-quality products. Retailers face the challenge of sourcing reliable inventory while managing costs and staying compliant with regulations. One effective solution is working through vape wholesale UK channels, which provide access to a wide range of products at competitive prices. This method helps businesses maintain steady stock levels, quickly adapt to changing trends, and offer customers the latest devices and flavors. By leveraging strong wholesale partnerships, retailers can build a sustainable business model that supports growth and meets consumer expectations in a competitive marketplace. Social trends profoundly influence UK vaping habits and sales by shaping consumer motivations, preferences, and perceptions. Businesses that adeptly interpret these trends and embed them into product innovation, marketing, and customer engagement strategies stand to gain a competitive edge. Embracing health consciousness, leveraging digital communities, respecting regulatory boundaries, promoting sustainability, and fostering social acceptance are all vital components of a successful approach. In a socially dynamic marketplace, staying attuned to cultural shifts ensures relevance, builds brand loyalty, and drives sustainable growth in the UK vape industry. TIME BUSINESS NEWS

California man slugs NYPD sergeant who tried to guide him out of Times Square street in caught-on-video attack

A California man slugged a uniformed NYPD sergeant who tried to usher him out of a Times Square street in a caught-on-video attack early Tuesday — part of a troubling trend of attacks on uniformed officials in the Big Apple over the past few days. Video posted to Instagram showed the moment the officer attempted to guide 21-year-old Aaron Cuauhtemoc Domsky by his arm out of the street at 7th Avenue and West 46th Street around 2:45 a.m. A belligerent Domsky turned on the cop — dealing a single blow to his jaw and running off as the shell-shocked officer trailed him, the clip shows. As Domsky tried to make his escape, he slapped a 19-year-old woman in the face and elbowed another woman, 35, in the back of the head — causing her to fall and hit her head on the ground, according to a criminal complaint. Domsky, of Costa Mesa, was eventually arrested and charged with assault in the second and third degrees, according to court documents. Domsky was ordered held on $30,000 cash bail, $80,000 insurance company bond and $60,000 partially secured surety bond during his Wednesday arraignment. He was also ordered to undergo a psychiatric exam and is scheduled to reappear in court on Friday. The Times Square attack comes on the heels of at least three other recent crimes dating back to Friday targeting cops and other uniformed officials. A cop canvassing an upscale retail store on Bedford Avenue near North 4th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, witnessed four people attempting to rob the place just before 10 p.m. Friday, cops said. The detective attempted to stop the heist when the group began attacking him, cops said. Those suspects remain at large. In perhaps the most jarring incident, a bus rider in the Bronx threatened a ticket inspector with a gun because he refused to let a woman on who didn't have enough money, cops said. An Eagle Team inspector for the BX 21 turned a woman away because she didn't have money for the fare — with a man on the bus then offering to pay for her, cops said. The man became irate with the ticket inspector and got off the bus — later returning to 163rd Street and 3rd Avenue to threaten the MTA employee with a handgun. Nearby cops approached the gun-toting madman who then ditched the weapon and fled on foot. Christopher Neal, 56, was charged with menacing, disorderly conduct, and criminal possession of a weapon. NYPD officers were able to recover the gun and arrested the alleged perpetrator, according to police sources. These brazen assaults come in the wake of the brutal mugging of an off-duty NYPD officer who was still in uniform on Saturday in the Bronx. Video showed the two goons knock the cop down, hold him at knifepoint and steal the NYPD gun belt from his car. Taveon Hargrove, 23, was taken into custody in connection to the attack on Tuesday in Virginia after fleeing there with his mother. US Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force used the injured officer's own handcuffs to corral a bloodied Hargrove in the town of North Chesterfield. The NYPD on Wednesday identified and released a photo of Hargrove's accomplice, 22-year-old Wayne Lucas, who is still on the loose.
