Held June 12-15, this exclusive, by-invitation-only conference included clients and DMC partners for three days of data-driven insights, strategic collaboration, and meaningful connection. This year's program took a deep dive into the forces reshaping the global MICE industry, from macroeconomic headwinds and geopolitical uncertainty to evolving attendee expectations and the transformative role of AI.

The MICE sector is projected to see a 59 percent increase in business tourism through 2033, contributing significantly to the travel and tourism sector's all-time-high, $11.7 trillion impact on global GDP. However, at the same, 53 percent of planners are contending with rebookings due to political or unforeseen disruptions, and over half report that inflation and cost unpredictability are impeding long-term planning.

Flexibility, proactive communication, and a strong sense of partnership emerged as common threads. Speakers emphasized the importance of collaboration between clients, DMCs, and operations teams early in the process, noting that creativity and transparency are key to delivering impact without overspending. Trends such as prioritizing one memorable, communal experience over multiple excursions, tapping into secondary markets, and leveraging brand alliances for consistency and value also surfaced as effective strategies.
With 72 percent of organizations using events to drive employee engagement and 84 percent of Gen Z and Millennials seeking real friendships through live events, this year's Connection placed a strong emphasis on personalization and purpose. Sessions such as "Beyond the Obvious" spotlighted emerging destinations offering cost-effective, culturally rich alternatives to traditional meeting destinations. Meanwhile, "Spark Your Creativity" presented a curated collection of innovative creative ideas—from midsummer festivals and grape stomping to branded gifting lounges and floating sushi bars.
As in previous years, the program also embraced a strong commitment to community impact. Luxury brands face global, generational challenges, report says

Economic uncertainty, global unrest and shifting cultural trends and attitudes are weighing on the luxury sector and putting pressure on brands, according to a new report from Bain & Company and Italian luxury goods industry association Altagamma. The personal luxury goods segment contracted 1% last year, and Q1 sales for 2025 are expected to have seen a slide between 1% and 3%, per the report. Under what Bain expects to be the most likely scenario for the months ahead, the sector will contract 2% to 5% in 2025. To combat the declines, Bain recommends that luxury goods marketers refocus on business fundamentals, grounding value propositions in clear and differentiated brand identities and shaping a precise and unique positioning that aligns with their customers' desires. While luxury spending has always been sensitive to outside market factors and economic uncertainty, the sector's issues are being exacerbated in the present by cultural disillusionment. This shift is most notable in Gen Z, who are questioning the sector's price-to-value proposition and their relationship with luxury. The report also points to how shifting preferences within luxury subsectors are impacting growth. While spending on personal luxuries slowed in the first quarter and demand for fine wines and spirits stagnated, luxury hospitality spending remained robust, reflecting consumers' desire to spend more on experiences rather than things. Across demographics, overall engagement with luxury brands has declined since 2022. The research shows brand-related searches are down for more than 40% of brands, social media follower growth has fallen 90% and engagement rates off by 40%. Bain attributed the drop-offs to price fatigue and stagnant creativity, leading brands to respond with new experiential formats, category diversification and 'beyond product' experiences. Shifting attitudes toward luxury have created an opening for newer, more agile and culturally relevant brands to make inroads with consumers by blending authenticity with modern strategy and creativity, per the report. 'As the industry faces an increasingly complex global landscape, luxury brands are entering a pivotal new chapter – one that demands sharper focus, greater cultural relevance, and growth rooted in purpose,' said Federica Levato, Bain & Company senior partner and leader of the firm's Fashion & Luxury practice in EMEA, in a release. While marketers across sectors are striving to make culture a central part of brand strategy and planning as they look to modernize their products, defining culture isn't always easy. 'At the heart of this shift lies a more fundamental question: who are we as a brand, and what do we stand for?,' said Levato, in a statement. 'Answering this with clarity and conviction will be critical for any brand aiming not just to endure, but to lead in this new era of transformation.' Back-to-school spending persists despite economic pressure, consumer survey says
Families are not holding back on back-to-school spending this year, despite growing economic pressure, according to a new PwC consumer survey. Nearly three-quarters of back-to-school shoppers expect to spend the same amount or more this year than they did in 2024, according to PwC's survey of nearly 2,000 parents. In fact, more than 1 in 3 parents anticipate spending more than they did last year. "A lot of it is necessities. It's people knowing that they're going to have to get this specific book, or these specific supplies for school or they require technology for their kids," said Kelly Pedersen, PwC's U.S. retail leader. The results indicate a value-oriented consumer, Pedersen said, but at the same time, back-to-school spending is insulated because "this is just necessary spend every year." The results come as consumers grapple with an uncertain economic environment due to global trade dynamics. While consumer confidence for May was stronger than expected, spending for the month pulled back sharply. The temporary pauses on some of President Donald Trump's tariffs have been viewed as a positive indicator for consumers, although the long-term path forward for tariffs remains unclear, especially as some retailers have said they will raise prices. Among the back-to-school shopping destinations, Walmart and Target said they plan to hike some prices, while Best Buy is among the retailers that said it has already raised some prices. "A lot of the average consumers in the U.S. sort of feel this cloud hanging above of, when are the tariffs going to hit, and what are those going to do to prices," Pedersen said. He said value will be important moving forward, as he has seen consumers shifting toward more discount retailers over the past couple of months. Indeed, buying items only on discount and reusing items from previous years are among the top ways consumers plan on saving during back-to-school season, according to the survey. For those who are cutting back on back-to-school spending, technology and clothing are the top two categories where they're planning to pull back, according to PwC, while essentials like books and school supplies are more insulated. On back-to-school technology, 25% of parents plan to spend more than $500, while 42% expect to pay under $50. While the amount of back-to-school spending has stayed relatively constant overall, parents are changing the ways they shop. Artificial intelligence in particular is impacting how parents handle the back-to-school season. One in 5 shoppers plan to use AI tools to find online deals, according to the survey. When it comes to physical retail, Gen Z is leading the way. Gen Z parents surveyed were more likely than millennials or Gen X parents to shop exclusively in store, suggesting the younger generation could be contributing to brick-and-mortar resilience, PwC said.

These online resellers bring in hundreds of dollars a month. Here's how they do it
PHILADELPHIA - In Society Hill, Angela Tate makes an extra $200 a week on average, on top of her full-time job. Across the river in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, Katie Repko brings in about $500 to $700 a month while taking care of a newborn. In Philadelphia's Far Northeast, Kristin Doll made $75 in minutes - with just a photo of a discontinued "Aquamarine" Bath & Body Works lotion and a few clicks. These Philly-area residents have found success with an often-hit-or-miss side hustle: selling stuff online. "My best week was probably around $400, while working full-time," said Tate, 34. She is now scaling back her nannying career to focus on building her Closet Happy Hour social media pages into a full-blown online business. On the secondhand market, Tate said, "there is money to be made, and I love it." As persistent inflation has tightened household budgets, more U.S. consumers have taken on side hustles in recent years. Reselling clothing, accessories, furniture, home decor, and other items can be an appealing way to bring in extra cash. It can be done from home, and many resale websites and apps now assist with the process, though some take a cut of sellers' revenue. Analysts expect the secondhand market to grow even more in the coming years. High demand for secondhand Successful resellers say the gig requires time, effort and patience but can pay off, now more than ever. Repko, a 36-year-old who has been reselling since college, said demand recently exploded, driven by Gen Z and millennial consumers who want to save money and reduce waste. "Why spend $300 on something when you can spend $50 on it after somebody wore it once?" Repko said, describing the mindset of secondhand-market devotees, including her Retail Rescue Consignment followers. Across seven platforms, Repko currently has about 3,000 listings - mostly women's clothing, accessories, and shoes. Local customers can try on items at her home before they purchase. Repko has become so skilled at reselling that her friends, relatives, and neighbors now enlist her to sell their unwanted items, letting her keep a cut of the sale. Repko said she is currently selling for 36 other people. Drew Lazor also sells for friends and family. The 41-year-old Philadelphia freelance writer turned his pandemic sneaker-resale hobby into an online consignment shop for things people in his life would otherwise throw away. "If I have a T-shirt that I don't want, I sell it to someone else. I make a little bit of money. I declutter my house, and it doesn't go into a landfill," Lazor said. "That's a win across the board." Struggles of the resale market For every online-marketplace success story, there are countless tales of people who post items and get few takers. Some also deal with sophisticated scammers, including those who use AI chatbots. As an apartment dweller in Media, Pennsylvania, Chelsea Williams said, she wishes she could sell home decor, clothes and shoes at a neighborhood yard sale, instead of dealing with the back-and-forth of Facebook Marketplace. She has made about $200 selling furniture and home decor there, she said, and no more than $50 selling clothes. "You have to stage the clothing," said the 35-year-old, who works in accounting. Household items, on the other hand, can be easier to sell with "just a picture of a box saying 'coffee maker.' " In Philadelphia's Northern Liberties, Julia Duong recently made $60 selling an Instant Pot on Facebook Marketplace that she bought for $100, then barely used. When it comes to clothes, she often ends up just giving them away. Regular resellers said they have learned to be patient, keep posting items, and utilize multiple platforms. At the right price, "everything sells eventually," said Alexandra Yeganeh, a 34-year-old stay-at-home mom in Philadelphia, who has sold thousands of items. "Some things sell in the same day. … Some things sit for years." How to make money selling online Successful resellers say confidence and persistence are key. "Setting up the infrastructure to do it is very tedious. It takes a while to get momentum and get rolling," said Lazor, who would recommend starting on "tried and true" eBay due to its ease of use and number of shoppers. "There is definitely no reason to be intimidated," said Doll, a 38-year-old dental assistant, who made about $1,000 in a few months selling clothes, home decor, and skincare items on Poshmark and Mercari. "You can put things up. You can delete them. You can relist things. You have nothing to lose." Buyers are drawn to listings with high-quality photos, in good lighting, from different angles, and modeled on a person if possible, resellers say. In the description, be up-front about imperfections, including photos of small marks or tears, so buyers don't complain that they were misled, Doll said. To set a price, resellers said, they look for similar listings using a reverse image search to get a sense of the going rate. Prices should account for wear and tear, and high-end clothing with original tags can command a higher price. Certain items might sell better on a specific platform. Yeganeh said she goes to Facebook Marketplace when she is selling larger items she would prefer to have picked up in person, like furniture. Children's clothing and baby items tend to find new homes quickly on Marketplace, too, she said. eBay, meanwhile, is where Yeganeh said she sells collectible items or anything that might appeal to an older generation. Depop is her go-to for listing trendy clothing and "anything '90s." Tate and Repko have found followings on their own resale Instagram and Facebook accounts. Tate teases "curated drops" - such as summer neutrals or wedding guest dresses - on her Closet Happy Hour Instagram and Facebook pages and posts during after-work hours or on Sunday nights. "You want as much visibility as you can get," Tate said. Resellers said the extra cash goes toward everything from groceries to bills to concert tickets.
