The Hidden Risks Of Agentic AI (And How To Govern Them)

As artificial intelligence (AI) and agentic capabilities rapidly expand to solve for practical value-added use cases and practical applications, organizations are grappling with the complexities of governance and security. As is so often the case with new technology waves, we see policies, procedures and tooling struggling to keep up with the pace of innovation.
As an early adopter, Insight has been a pioneer in addressing the challenges and opportunities posed by agentic AI. Our learnings have helped us update and adapt our governance approach, security procedures and teammate education and guidance.
Based on what we've learned, here are a few key considerations for keeping agentic AI safeguarded while still reaping the benefits.
Understanding Agentic AI Governance
To ensure governance, policies, processes and safeguards remain in lockstep with agentic developments, it's vital to conduct rigorous and frequent reviews with inputs from stakeholders across the organization. This includes legal, IT, sales, services, operations and any group that stands to benefit from agentic AI.
Agents have the potential to drive meaningful transformation and efficiencies, but it's vital they do so securely, ethically and responsibly. Ensuring that teams that are deploying agents are aware of proper use policies and guidelines is critical to mitigating risk. So is ensuring security teams have the tools to monitor agentic activity.
Policy Development And Legal Involvement
A cornerstone of effective governance lies in comprehensive policy development. Our own early adoption of AI technologies provided valuable lessons in drafting policies tailored to agentic systems. You can't put the burden of AI policy development just on the tech teams or those who will be using the AI models. The legal team needs to be involved from the outset to ensure compliance and mitigate liability risks.
These policies should address potential misuse, specify acceptable use cases and delineate accountability, especially given the varied regulatory landscapes across regions.
Challenges In Implementation
Developing governance models is only part of the equation; socializing these policies within an organization is equally crucial. If your organization doesn't see the guidelines as reasonable and easily adoptable, they're going to try and find ways around them.
When we first started working with more generative AI models, several business units rapidly adopted AI platforms and agents. This created challenges related to data security, permissions and our teammates' understanding of policy restrictions.
Governance models need to be flexible, allowing organizations to adapt to the rapid evolution of AI while securing buy-in from stakeholders. We review our teammate use policies regularly and have rewritten them entirely as new advances—like agentic AI—have emerged.
Security: A Shift-Left Approach
Security considerations must be integrated into AI projects from the outset—a practice known as the 'shift-left mentality.' Incorporating thorough quality assurance processes tailored to address AI-specific security vulnerabilities is essential.
Our own approach includes reviewing AI tools based on parameters like data usage, read/write access, security controls and the reputability of providers. Our chief information security officer and security team are constantly exploring new models and testing them out, running them locally to ensure safety and security for our organization.
In one case, one of my EU-based colleagues proposed a concierge AI tool that, upon further inspection, we had to deny use of due to the level of access to information it required. Although the use case was valid, this demonstrated the importance of vigilance in tool selection.
Client Engagement And Regional Nuances
Our interactions with clients reveal a growing interest in responsible AI practices. Questions often revolve around basic principles, but the complexity of AI requirements varies across regions. Executives must provide nuanced answers that address these regional differences while adhering to their governance frameworks.

By Ashwin Manikandan MUMBAI (Reuters) -A Reserve Bank of India committee has recommended a framework for developing AI capabilities for the country's financial sector, while safeguarding it against associated risks, according to a report released on Wednesday. The committee has recommended setting up a digital infrastructure to help build indigenous AI models and a multi-stakeholder standing committee to evaluate risks and opportunities. It also suggested building a fund to incentivise the development of homegrown AI models tailored for the needs of India's financial services sector. "The report envisions a financial ecosystem where encouraging innovation is in harmony, and not at odds, with mitigation of risk," the RBI said in a statement. The report contains 26 recommendations under six categories including infrastructure, capacity, policy, governance, protection and assurance. Other key recommendations by the eight-member committee headed by Pushpak Bhattacharyya, a computer scientist at IIT Bombay, include issuing of an enabling framework to integrate AI with existing digital public platforms such as instant payment system UPI, and designing audit frameworks. The central bank had set up the committee in December to develop a Framework for Responsible and Ethical Enablement of Artificial Intelligence (FREEAI) for the finance sector. "The challenge with regulating AI is in striking the right balance, making sure that society stands to gain from what this technology has to offer, while mitigating its risks," according to the report. Donald Trump Jr. says his family 'didn't have a choice' but to get into crypto because banks didn't want to do business with them after January 6, 2021, referring to the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol as 'all the nonsense.' 'We got into crypto because we didn't have a choice,' the president's eldest son said on Fox & Friends Wednesday morning while discussing his family's cryptocurrency business's $1.5 billion digital coin deal. The Trump family's crypto business, World Liberty Finance, announced Monday that technology firm ALT5 Sigma would make a big purchase of its digital coin, $WLFI. ALT5 said it would sell $1.5 billion worth of shares, then use that money to purchase the Trump signature digital coin, which the family founded last year. 'Every major banking institution, the people that, two weeks before we were debanked, we could've called and gotten a loan in five seconds. They disappeared. We were left high and dry,' he said. 'Basically, during the first term, certainly after the…let's call it January 6… all the nonsense, it got significantly worse,' he said, referring to the deadly mob of his father's supporters who stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Five people, including one police officer, died and several more were injured when the pro-Trump mob breached the Capitol building. The president granted roughly 1,500 people convicted of January 6-related crimes pardons immediately after taking office in January. 'We weren't even early crypto guys, but we figured, if they can debank the Trump Organization, if they can debank us, who can't they go after? And more importantly, who won't they go after?' he continued. Trump Jr. said that instead of going home and 'go cry in a corner,' they decided to launch World Liberty Financial, which he described as the future of banking. 'What we're doing with World Liberty Financial, I think, is going to shake up the entire banking system. It is literally the future of finance,' he said. Joining Trump Jr. on the segment was his brother, Eric Trump, and World Liberty Financial's co-founder and CEO Zach Witkoff, who said they were looking to 'democratize' the financial system. 'Put power back in the hands of the people, instead of the big boogy man behind the curtain,' Witkoff said.
