Alan Pardew made himself a meme when he celebrated Crystal Palace 's goal in the FA Cup final in 2016. Donning a suit, the veteran boss knew exactly where the camera was as he showcased some moves that would stand the test of time.
The issue for Pardew was that Jason Puncheon's goal, despite coming just 12 minutes from the end, wasn't enough to seal the Eagles a cup triumph against Manchester United. As a result his audacious celebration left him with egg on his face.
Palace will return to Wembley for another FA Cup final nearly a decade on from that near miss, which saw Jesse Lingard score United's winner in extra-time.
Pardew has found himself travelling Europe in the years after his Palace sacking, which he could have few complaints about. The run to the FA Cup final certainly covered for major cracks elsewhere. By the time he was dismissed in December 2016 his side had won only six matches of 36 played in the calendar year.
The club's chairman Steve Parish said Pardew's "expansive style of football hasn't worked", and, "Now we're going to wind the dial back the other way".
West Brom felt that Pardew, who had enjoyed positive spells at the likes of West Ham and Newcastle previously in his managerial career, could help save them from Premier League relegation. His stay was brief - four months in fact.
He and the Baggies mutually parted company after they had gone ten games without a win, were on a run of eight successive defeats and sat bottom of the Premier League en route to relegation. It would be Pardew's final gig as a manager on home soil.
At so began his nomadic career in mainland Europe. First in Holland where he surprisingly landed the job at ADO Den Haag. He took charge of eight league games, winning one, before play was halted in the Netherlands by the Covid pandemic. That wasn't before the training ground was invaded by the club's ultras who demanded answers.
An angry set of fans went to the club's training base during a session and presented Pardew and his players with a flip-board as they looked to point out some of their errors in recent games. The ex-Palace boss saw his contract come to an end shortly after lockdown began.
In November 2020 he headed to Bulgaria, where he initially became an аdviser on football matters to the owners of CSKA Sofia. In April 2022 Pardew took charge of the first team following the resignation of the manager Stoycho Mladenov, but struggled for results.
In just his second game in charge CSKA were battered 5-0 by Ludogorets Razgrad - the biggest defeat of their season. He later left after a racist incident which saw CSKA fans throw bananas at their own players.
Pardew's most recent job took him to Greece where he was appointed as the new manager of Greek Super League club Aris Thessaloniki, replacing Germán Burgos in September 2022. He signed a one-year contract with the option to extend for a further year, but was gone by February. Since then he's featured as a regular pundit on talkSPORT.
His travels represent a major shift from the man who Carlo Ancelotti claimed should replace Roy Hodgson as England manager after Euro 2016. 'If England wanted an English manager after Hodgson, then Pardew is really good and I think he is the best option to be manager of the national team. I think he is the best candidate," said the five-time Champions League winner.

On Tuesday he was named in the PFA Premier League team of the season and used a post on Instagram expressing his gratitude to address his situation. 'I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,' Isak wrote. 'That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. 'The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To act now as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. 'When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.' Liverpool had a bid reportedly worth £110million plus add-ons rejected by Newcastle at the start of August but have retained an interest in the player despite signing Hugo Ekitike – a forward who was also targeted by Newcastle. Newcastle are said to value Isak at £150million, and would only consider a sale if they have signed a replacement. Jimmy Thelin: Why Aberdeen are ready for Premiership opener at Hearts
Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin is convinced his team are prepared for Monday's Premiership opener at Hearts, despite the sides' contrasting preparations. Thelin's Scottish Cup-winning Dons, guaranteed European league football this season have been not involved in the Premier Sports Cup group stage as a result of their Continental commitments and have yet to begin their competitive season. However, the Jambos racked up four convincing wins against lower-league opposition in their League Cup section. Now managed by former Reds gaffer Derek McInnes, Hearts have also beaten now-English Premier League Sunderland and English League Two Crawley Town during the summer. Aberdeen, meanwhile, won their opening pre-season friendly against third-tier city neighbours Cove Rangers, but lost a closed-door bounce game at Premier League Fulham, before a 3-1 defeat to relegated English top-flight Ipswich Town at Pittodrie on Friday. While Hearts have been able to build up momentum, according to our columnist, Dons great Willie Miller, ahead of the Tynecastle showdown, Thelin believes his Reds are good to go against one of their expected rivals this term. Thelin said: 'We are ready for the season to start. We're looking forward to the season to start. 'Then during the season you always want to be better and grow – but we are fully ready for the first game of the season. 'I think we're going to be in four competitions this season, and I think as a player when you go out, you want to do well in all competitions. 'That is why the Ipswich and Fulham games helped us. It was quite competitive from our side, so I think that helps a lot, because they stretch us and they push us to get up the intensity. 'We are getting better and these games will help us going forward. 'I think also the first game of the season, all the emotions, all the spirit will also be there.' The Dons boss added: 'On Friday, the fans were at Pittodrie. It was around 13,000 people for a friendly game. It was amazing. 'I saw the players trying, so I'm not afraid that we won't be ready in a competitive way.' Despite Aberdeen opening their season on Hearts' patch, Thelin also implied his side will be going out to play their game, rather than adapt tactically to the hosts' approach. He said: 'We focus most on the way we want to play and the way we want to grow. 'But, of course, our analytic team has a good report on them and that's the topic for this week – go through all these games they've played so far, the ideas they want to do and then we prepare for that.' After the friendly reverse to Ipswich, Aberdeen centre-half Mats Knoester pointed to the Dons experimenting with a higher defensive line as a mitigating factor in the visitors being able to net three times. Manager Thelin concurred, but also highlighted other points – namely his team not stepping out quickly enough, and coughing up too many chances back to back – where improvements can be made. He said: 'Yes, we're trying to grow all the time and be more compact. 'I think some parts were quite good and still we have some small, small things to adjust to be better, but some parts were really good. 'But then in some moments of the game when we get, I think that's the first goal, then we get stuck in the moment when we don't really come up. 'They were using (exploiting) this really, really well. You see when they get time on the ball and accelerate the game, and it's really, really quick. 'These kinds of things are important – how can we be better to control this part of the game? 'It's important for us to grow in these parts – when we get hurt in the game with the first goal and (we) don't (let them) get one, two, three more chances in a row. 'We have this moment where we have to be more stable.'

Aberdeen's first pre-match press conference of the 2025/26 season, ahead of Monday's Premiership opener at Hearts, will be held at 1.15pm on Friday – and we are bringing you all of the key updates from Cormack Park. Jimmy Thelin's Dons will have to wait to kick off their top-flight campaign, and head to Tynecastle for a televised showdown with a Jambos side now managed by ex-Reds gaffer Derek McInnes. Aberdeen boss Thelin will be speaking with the media at the club's training ground ahead of the match – and his sophomore season – while one player will also talk to the press. Topics are sure to include attacker Pape Habib Gueye's exit and the Dons' hunt for further summer reinforcements – including their bid to land AC Milan's Serbian forward Marko Lazetic. If you discount their first three away games of the season, during their incredible start to Thelin's rein, it was just TWO. The good news? Aberdeen were unbeaten in four meetings against Monday's opponents Hearts last season, but the Gorgie outfit have made a strong start in the Premier Sports Cup under their new boss Derek McInnes – the long-time Dons manager. The forward was a Dons target in January, and negotiations have been continuing ever since, The Press and Journal understands. But Milan are proving hard to pin down over Lazetic – who is not in the picture at the San Siro and spent last term on loan with TSC in his homeland. While there have been reports of AC demanding as much as four million euros for the forward, it is understood Dons chiefs expect it will take far less to land their man – who they view as a 'project' player in a summer where they have already signed 26-year-old Australia international striker Kusini Yengi. Will Thelin anything about the Lazetic chase? 12.03pm: Just like that, Gueye's move to Turkey has been confirmed by Aberdeen. 'We wish Pape all the very best with his transfer to Turkey, and we thank him for his contributions during his time at Aberdeen, notably his positive impact in the Scottish Cup final', said Dons boss Jimmy Thelin. 'We're pleased with our recruitment so far this summer and the work remains ongoing to bring in further reinforcements and improvements ahead of the window closing. We are still shaping the squad.
