Young Frenchman on trial for drug trafficking in Malaysia
Tom Flix has gone on trial in northern Malaysia, charged with drug possession and trafficking which could carry the death penalty if he is found guilty.
Flix, 34, a former executive of French waste management firm Veolia,was arrested in early August 2023 on the island resort of Langkawi, where he was hoping to open a restaurant.
Police found several hundred grams of cannabis in a common area of the house he shared with his Malaysian business partner, who was also arrested.
Flix's lawyer Collin Andrew said the hearing began Monday at the Alor Setar High Court in northwestern Malaysia and was then ajourned until Tuesday after the first witness had not brought all the necessary documents to court.
The trial was scheduled to end on Thursday, but it was not known whether sentencing would take place immediately afterwards.
Flix faces the death penalty, or "104 years of cumulative imprisonment, 54 strokes with a cane and a 27,000 euro fine," his mother Sylvie Flix told France's AFP news agency.
Drugpossession and trafficking are serious crimes inMalaysiathat can still carry the death sentence if the amounts are above a certain threshold.
Death sentences, however, are no longer mandatory and no executions have taken place since 2018.

'Terrible' conditions in prison
Felix's parents spoke to French PresidentEmmanuel Macronabout his case during a recent state visit to neighbouringSingapore, where they live.
"He heard us and said that this situation is indeed unacceptable and that he would do everything possible to ensure Tom's release," Flix's mother said.
His family insists that, during the investigation, Tom was exonerated by his partner, but that the Malaysian police did not take this into account.
Since his arrest 22 months ago, Flix has been held in Perlis prison in "terrible" conditions, according to his lawyer and family.
In footage taken from adocumentarybroadcast on M6's 66 Minutes in December 2024, the detainee appears emaciated and refers to his total despair.
"It's not always easy to keep him fighting," his mother told Le Parisien daily in December 2024.

"He also has suicidal thoughts; he told me he felt like swallowing a box of sleeping pills and never waking up again."
Serge Atlaoui, aFrenchmanwho was held on death row in Indonesia for drug offences was released in February and returned to France.
Jakarta left it to the French government to grant Atlaoui the only Frenchman on death row in Indonesia "clemency, amnesty or a reduced sentence".

UK vows tougher laws to combat child grooming gangs
LONDON: The UK government announced Monday it would bring in tough new laws to "root out the scourge" of grooming gangs suspected of sexually exploiting thousands of girls and young women. "We will change the law to ensure that adults who engage in penetrative sex with a child under 16 face the most serious charge of rape," interior minister Yvette Cooper told parliament, as authorities launched a nationwide crackdown on the gangs. The announcement came as a damning report written by member of the upper house of the UK parliament Louise Casey was published. Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday announced a new national inquiry would be launched into the scandal, one of Casey's 12 recommendations. The report "concludes that further local investigations are needed, but they should be directed and overseen by a national commission with statutory inquiry powers" to compel witnesses to give evidence under oath, said Cooper. "We agree, and we will set up a national inquiry to that effect," she added. The report found that the ethnicity of perpetrators was "shied away from and is still not recorded for two-thirds of perpetrators, so we are unable to provide any accurate assessment from the nationally collected data." But Cooper said that Asian men, particularly from a Pakistani background, were "overrepresented" and that ethnicity and nationality of suspects in grooming cases will now be recorded on a mandatory basis. The issue of UK grooming gangs was thrust into the international spotlight in January when tech billionaire Elon Musk launched incendiary attacks on his X platform against the UK government for resisting calls for a national inquiry. Gangs of men targeted mostly white girls from disadvantaged backgrounds, some of whom lived in children's homes. The gangs operated in several English towns and cities including Rotherham and Rochdale in the north, but also in Oxford and Bristol, for almost four decades.--AFP

Taiwan indicts Wang Talu over alleged plot to dodge military duty
TAIPEI: Taiwanese actor Wang Talu and 27 others were charged on Monday with offences relating to dodging the island's mandatory military service, prosecutors said. Taiwan lives under the constant threat of invasion by China, which claims the self-ruled island is part of its territory, and Taipei's military is struggling to recruit and retain troops. Mandatory military service for men aged 18 and over was extended to one year from the previously obligatory period of four months, taking effect at the beginning of last year. Deferment can be granted for higher education, although all men are required to serve in the military by the time they turn 36. Wang, 34, also known as Darren Wang, is a popular actor in Taiwan, South Korea and China, where news of his questioning by police in February was the top trending topic on China's X-like social media platform Weibo. The New Taipei District Prosecutors Office said in a statement Wang had been charged with knowingly causing a public official to make a false entry in a public document. Wang allegedly paid the "prime suspect" in the case, a person surnamed Chen, NT$3.6 million (US$120,000) to "handle matters related to evading military service." Chen was detained before he could carry out the plan, which involved another defendant using Wang's ID and health insurance cards to go to hospital under the actor's name, prosecutors said. Chen and another 26 defendants were also charged with violating the military service system by "hurting the body or using other methods to change the physical conditions." Under Taiwanese law, anyone found guilty of that offence faces up to five years in prison. "The conscription system is the cornerstone of maintaining social stability and national security," prosecutors said, warning that using illegal means to evade it would undermine social order and national security. Wang, who was granted bail and was set to begin his military service in March, faces a maximum term of three years in prison if found guilty. Chen could face at least five years in jail for enabling "a large number of conscripts" to dodge conscription and pocketing NT$7.63 million.--AFP
