Loved ones of paddleboarder killed in Maine to hold a celebration of life
Sunshine Stewart, 48, of St. George, went missing in July while paddleboarding on Crawford Pond, a popular summer destination in Union. She was later found dead, and police charged Deven Young, 17, of Frankfort, Maine, with murder in connection with her death.
Stewart's loved ones are calling Sunday's memorial a 'maritime celebration of life.' They are holding the memorial at 10:30 a.m. in the Tenants Harbor section of St. George, where Stewart lived. The event will include a procession of vessels in the vicinity of Tenants Harbor, according to the organizers.
'On August 10, 2025, family, friends, and community will gather on the sea to honor and remember the radiant life of Sunshine 'Sunny' Stewart — a woman whose light touched every soul she met,' promoters of the event said in a social media post.
The Office of the Maine Attorney General has said it is seeking to try Young as an adult. A judge will need to rule on that request. Young is due in court for a status conference on Aug. 22.
Young made a brief initial court appearance last month in which he entered a denial to the murder charge. His attorney, Jeremy Pratt, has declined to comment.
Authorities have released few details about the killing and have not publicly speculated about a motive. Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss said the investigation into Stewart's death is still active and 'will be for some time.'
Stewart lived about 20 miles (34 kilometers) from the pond where she was killed. The pond is popular with boaters and fishermen and is the site of a campground. Police have said a medical examiner determined Stewart's cause of death was strangulation and blunt force trauma.
In the weeks since the killing, friends of Stewart have memorialized her as an independent spirit, a dedicated friend and a lover of the ocean and the outdoors. She took a varied career path through life, working as a biologist, fisherman, carpenter and in many other roles, friends said.
Bethany Leach Parmley, a lifelong friend, described Stewart as 'a really loyal, wonderful friend.'

Ethan Nieneker, 32, is accused of killing a man, a four-year-old girl and her grandfather in a car park in Austin on Monday. Austin police shared a mugshot of Mr Nieneker, which shows gashes and bruises around his eyes. The alleged killer, whom police described as having a 'mental health history', was detained following a police chase that involved two cars he had stolen for his failed getaway. Officers said he was found naked holding a Bible and claiming to be Jesus. Mr Nieneker is being held in Travis County Jail on murder charges. He already has a lengthy criminal record, including arrests for assault, family violence, drunk driving and criminal mischief, Fox News reported. The shooting unfolded at around 2.15pm local time, when Mr Nieneker allegedly entered the shop car park and opened fire with a handgun at random, killing Hector Martinez Machuca, Adam Chow and his granddaughter. He first approached Machuca, a Target employee, shooting him as he collected carts outside the store, according to Austin Police Sgt Nathan Sexton. Mr Nieneker is then alleged to have approached a family getting into a Toyota, where police said he gunned down Mr Chow and his granddaughter, before assaulting the man's wife and stealing their car. Mr Machuca later died in hospital, while Mr Chow and his granddaughter both died at the scene. His wife suffered minor injuries as a result of her assault. As Mr Nieneker made his hour-long getaway, Sgt Sexton said he was responsible for causing at least one crash, attempting to steal a truck, assaulting another woman who he threw from a vehicle during a car-jacking, and attempting to break into a taxi. Mr Nieneker was eventually tasered by police around 20 miles from the scene and taken into custody, while the murder weapon was recovered from the Chow family's Toyota 4-Runner, police said. In addition to murder charges, Mr Nieneker is expected to face charges related to assault, vehicle theft and property damage. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said: 'This is a very sad day for Austin. It's a very sad day for us all and my condolences go out to the families.'

Great white shark is seen near popular beaches in Maine, sparking a warning from police
Reports of a large great white shark near some of Maine's most popular beaches have prompted police in one coastal town to issue a warning on Tuesday. Scarborough 's marine resource officer got word of the roughly 10- to 12-foot shark (over 3 meters) on Monday, police said. The shark was spotted in the area of Crescent Beach State Park, Higgins Beach and Pine Point Beach, they said, all located within a half-hour's drive of Portland. Commercial clam fisherman David Lancaster was able to take drone footage of the shark swimming just beneath the surface, its grey fin poking through the gentle swells. He said seeing the big shark was 'magnificent,' if a little surprising. 'It was pretty crazy to see in the local waters. There are some really amazing creatures in the sea,' Lancaster, who loves in nearby Scarborough, said. 'It's in the back of your head, but you have to accept it.' White sharks, made famous 50 years ago in the movie 'Jaws,' are not commonly seen off Maine, but have lived in the state's waters for centuries. Sightings ticked up in recent years, and some scientists say the state's growing population of seals could be a reason for more shark activity. White sharks feed on marine mammals such as seals. The police department in Scarborough said they were circulating the drone footage 'for public situational awareness' after the big fish was spotted. 'We are sharing this information promptly to keep the community informed,' police said in a statement. Fatal shark bites for humans are exceedingly rare. The first recorded fatal shark attack in Maine happened in the summer of 2020 when a great white shark killed 63-year-old Julie Dimperio Holowach of New York City. She was attacked off Bailey Island, around 15 miles (24 kilometers) northeast of Portland. The state responded with efforts to provide beachgoers with more warning about the presence of sharks.
