Safer internet for our youth is a collective responsibility

I can still remember one of my earliest encounters with the internet when I was a freshman student at the George Washington University, searching for information on English literature for my English class. I had just been introduced to the university's online library database and it felt overwhelming yet thrilling. I typed 'Romantic poets' into the search bar and, within seconds, dozens of journal articles and book excerpts filled the screen. I was amazed at how much information was at my fingertips. Gone were the days of flipping through endless library catalogs. That moment marked the beginning of my deep appreciation for the digital world as a gateway to knowledge and discovery.
The internet has become an indispensable part of modern life, connecting billions, fostering innovation and providing access to information like never before. It is a widely accessible and powerful tool for communication, connection, education, commerce — and entertainment too.
However, this very interconnectedness has also created vulnerabilities, some of which have unfortunately led to a decline in online safety. The speed of the internet has meant the quick relay of helpful knowledge, but also the rapid spread of misinformation. The rise of anonymity has protected some people but emboldened others to do things online that they would not do in person. It can amplify anything — a show of empathy but also trolling and cyberbullying.
A safer internet is particularly important for younger audiences, whose sense of themselves — and the world at large — is still being formed. So, how do we make and keep the internet safer? This is a question that comes up regularly, not just on Safer Internet Day, which was marked last week. The short answer is: collectively.
The speed of the internet has meant the quick relay of helpful knowledge, but also the rapid spread of misinformation
As consumers, we need to be more critical of the information we consume online, practicing media literacy and fact-checking before sharing. We must be responsible digital citizens and role models by treating others with respect, while also reporting harmful content when we see it. Schools have a role in educating people on how to use the internet and for what. Coders must build security into the very fabric of online platforms.
Platforms where large communities connect and create content are also stepping up and looking at how they can enhance safety measures, while still delivering an optimal and tailored user experience. For example, TikTok features like 'Restricted Mode' limit exposure to mature or complex themes, while 'Comment Care Mode' helps with enhanced comment filtering, thereby ensuring content remains age-appropriate.
The content community platform is refining its 'Family Pairing' feature and tweaking direct messaging settings, while it also has a 'Screen Time Management' tool that promotes healthier digital habits and scheduled breaks, with activity dashboards. Youth safety enhancements further strengthen protections for younger users, including default privacy settings and content restrictions, encouraging safer and more mindful engagement.
We can all contribute to a safer and more positive online experience, ensuring that the internet remains a force for good
Keeping the internet safe is not someone else's responsibility; it is ours. It is a collective effort that requires collaboration, action and contributions from platforms, coders, governments, schools, communities and individual users. We can all contribute to a safer and more positive online experience, ensuring that the internet remains a force for good in the world. This is not just a challenge, it is an opportunity to be part of shaping a digital future that harbors online safety, champions cyber resilience and empowers meaningful connections to information, entertainment and each other, for everyone.

Alkhobar launches tree digitization project to become smart green city

Jeddah: The Eastern Province Municipality has launched a project to document and digitize trees in Alkhobar, aiming to make it the first smart green city in the region. The first phase will involve the recording and digital tagging of more than 100,000 trees. The initiative is expected to strengthen Alkhobar's global standing, as the city ranks 61st in the 2025 Smart Cities Index. Officials said that the project reflects the municipality's commitment to environmental sustainability while creating economic opportunities by encouraging private sector participation in tree-planting campaigns. Each tree will be fitted with an electronic tag carrying detailed information such as its species, location and care guidelines, in both Arabic and English. The tags will be geo-linked to create a comprehensive database of Alkhobar's green assets. The project will also promote investment in smart cities and sustainable infrastructure, raise environmental awareness and enhance social responsibility, the Saudi Press Agency reported. More than 10,000 trees have already been tagged in areas including the Southern Corniche, the waterfront, the Northern Corniche and along main roads. The program will eventually cover all trees across the city. The initiative aligns with the Saudi Green Initiative, which aims to reduce carbon emissions, plant 10 billion trees, and protect 30 percent of the Kingdom's land and marine areas by 2030. Across the Kingdom, cities are adopting sustainable urban strategies to improve air quality, expand green spaces and enhance biodiversity. Saudi Arabia's broader smart city vision includes megaprojects such as NEOM with its futuristic developments, The Line, Oxagon, Trojena and Sindalah, powered entirely by renewable energy. Riyadh is advancing with integrated smart transport, digital healthcare and its massive Green Riyadh afforestation program. Jeddah Economic City is being designed with smart energy grids and automated waste systems, while King Abdullah Economic City focuses on port innovation and digital ecosystems. Qiddiya City near Riyadh is set to become a global entertainment and sports hub with AI-driven operations, and Mohammed bin Salman Nonprofit City in Riyadh is pioneering a global-first district dedicated to education, innovation and culture.

Pakistan partners with TikTok to launch science and technology feed, boost education access

KARACHI: Pakistan, in partnership with video-streaming app TikTok, on Monday launched its dedicated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) feed, the Pakistani information technology (IT) ministry said, reinforcing the country's commitment to make high-quality educational content more accessible and engaging for all. The new STEM feed on TikTok is a dedicated, in-app experience where users can explore a curated stream of high-quality content that is designed to spark curiosity, promote critical thinking and expand digital learning opportunities, especially for students, educators and young professionals, across Pakistan, according to the IT ministry. TikTok is also partnering with leading academic institutions across the country to launch a training program for teachers, educators and instructors. These trainings are focused on empowering them with the tools, techniques and best practices needed to create compelling, informative and engaging STEM content tailored for short-form video. 'This initiative is aligned with our broader vision to use digital platforms to enhance education and skill development in Pakistan,' Pakistan's Information Technology and Telecommunication Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja said. 'TikTok's STEM feed is an excellent example of how technology can democratize access to knowledge and empower our youth, including aspiring female students, to explore new career pathways in science and technology.' The minister announced that her government was developing a new policy to provide smartphones to Pakistanis on easy installments, ensuring digital devices are accessible to every individual. Under the DigiSkills program, she said, 100,000 youth had been trained in the past year and the target for this year is to provide artificial intelligence (AI) training to 1 million children. State Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Wajiha Qamar welcomed the launch of TikTok's dedicated STEM Feed in Pakistan as a step toward making science and technology more accessible and relatable to Pakistani youth. 'Digital platforms, when used responsibly, can become powerful tools for education, creativity, and empowerment. This initiative aligns with our national goals to promote STEM learning and build a future-ready generation— curious, skilled, and inspired,' she said. TikTok is wildly popular in Pakistan, in part because of its accessibility to a population with low literacy levels. In addition to the dedicated feed, TikTok will be actively nurturing Pakistan's local STEM creator community, providing training and guidance to increase the volume and quality of STEM content across the platform in English, Urdu and regional languages as well, according to the IT ministry. This effort is aimed at building a self-sustaining educational ecosystem where both formal educators and independent creators contribute to a shared mission: making STEM education fun, inclusive, and discoverable. The video-sharing platform has launched a dedicated hashtag #StemTok as well as a landing page, where it will feature content created by partners, creators and publishers, providing easy access to local language STEM content in Pakistan. 'The launch of the TikTok STEM feed in Pakistan marks an exciting milestone in our mission to inspire and educate through creativity,' said Fahad Muhammad Khan Niazi, TikTok's head of public policy and government relations in Pakistan. 'By partnering with the MoITT (Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication), Government of Pakistan, and by collaborating with prestigious academic institutions, we are investing in Pakistan's future talent. STEM education has the power to transform lives, and we are proud to be supporting its digital evolution on TikTok.' By combining the reach and creative potential of TikTok with the expertise of Pakistan's top educational institutions and government bodies, the STEM feed will create new, scalable avenues for learning, according to the Pakistani IT ministry. 'From explaining complex physics concepts through short videos to coding tutorials, engineering hacks, and climate science awareness, STEM content will now be more relatable and accessible than ever before,' it said, adding the initiative aims to foster innovation and empower youth through technology-driven education.
