ADB team visits Maharani's College, holds consultation on infrastructure upgrade

As part of the Karnataka Higher Education Transformation Project, a team of experts from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) visited Maharani's Arts College for Women and Maharani's Science College for Women in Mysuru on Thursday and held extensive interaction with the stakeholders.
It was based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Department of Higher Education and the ADB.
The four-year project, sanctioned in 2023 with a financial outlay of ₹2,500 crore as a loan, aims to upgrade infrastructure, enhance academic facilities, and create employability skills among students in 440 Government First Grade Colleges, 107 polytechnic colleges, and 16 engineering colleges across the State.
With the groundwork now complete, the project is ready for implementation, said a release. A nine-member ADB team, comprising global experts and scholars in education and development, is leading the consultation.
Chandrashekar B., Joint Director, Department of Collegiate and Technical Education (DCTE), Mysore Region, emphasised the need to bridge skill gaps and build capacity in higher education. He said a lot more has to be done in the field of higher education and steps need to be taken to fill the skill gap among students, to enable them to excel, the release added.
The ADB team interacted with faculty members, students and alumni of the college.
The team toured the campus to apprise itself of the current state of the buildings and the infrastructure of the college.

The program is led by the state's Labour, Skill Development and Employment Department in collaboration with Kaushalya: The Skill University (KSU), with an aim to equip the state's workforce with industry-aligned, advanced skills that boost job readiness in high-growth program will be focusing on seven high-priority industries such as logistics, automotive, manufacturing, information technology, renewable energy, healthcare, and the Gujarat Skills Development Program is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and Gujarat's Skills Development Plan (2025-2030).'Realising Gujarat's aspiration to emerge as a globally competitive and innovative industrial hub hinges on cultivating a workforce proficient in advanced and emerging technologies,' said ADB Principal Social Sector Specialist Uzma Hoque.'This program is a transformative effort to modernise the TVET ecosystem by integrating technologies such as artificial intelligence, aligning training with evolving industry needs, and fostering inclusive, employment-focused, future-ready talent,' Uzma program will support increased participation of women and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups in engineering and frontier technology trades. By 2030, it aims to graduate at least 60,000 students with advanced skills, increase female enrollment in engineering disciplines, and provide 175,000 disadvantaged individuals with training that enhances their employment prospects. Multilateral funding agency ADB on Friday said it has approved a $109.97 million (about Rs 927 crore) results-based loan to support Gujarat in advancing its vision of becoming a global industrial hub through a stronger, future-ready workforce. The Gujarat skills development programme, led by the state's Labour, Skill Development and Employment Department in collaboration with Kaushalya: The Skill University (KSU), aims to equip the state's workforce with industry-aligned, advanced skills that boost job readiness in high-growth sectors, ADB said in a statement. The programme will strengthen the institutional and managerial capacity of the KSU network and broaden access to high-quality, industry-relevant training courses that integrate frontier technologies, it said. Through this process, the programme aims to transform the governance and performance of the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system in Gujarat, establishing a scalable model that can be replicated across other states in India, it said. Focusing on seven high-priority industries logistics, automotive, manufacturing, information technology, renewable energy, healthcare, and agri-tech the programme will implement a range of interventions, it said. These include upgrading 11 mega industrial training institutes (ITIs), establishing centres of excellence, and partnering with affiliated private training providers through a hub-and-spoke model anchored by KSU, it said. Courses will be designed in close collaboration with the industry to ensure alignment with market demands and job trends, it added.
