Georgia schedules another cupcake 2026 nonconference opponent

USA Today24-07-2025
The Georgia Bulldogs are scheduled to play the Tennessee State Tigers in 2026, per Mike Organ of the Tennesseean.
In 2026, Georgia is already scheduled to play the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (home) on Sept. 12, the Louisville Cardinals (away) on Sept. 19 and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Nov. 28 (home). Georgia will also play their permanent SEC opponent, the Florida Gators. Based on Georgia's decision to schedule Tennessee State, we expect the SEC to play just eight conference games in 2026.
The SEC has long discussed adding a ninth conference game like the Big Ten. However, it does not appear that will be the case in 2026. The SEC has not released the conference schedule for the 2026 season.
Based on Georgia's other nonconference games, we would expect for the Bulldogs to host Tennessee State on Sept. 5 in Week 1. Georgia is paying to play Tennessee State in a one game series, but we don't know how much at this time.
Georgia will be the first of three SEC opponents that Tennessee State will play from 2026-2029. The Tigers and head coach Reggie Barlow are also set to play Tennessee in 2027 and Vanderbilt in 2029.
"You're talking about SEC games, you're talking about great tradition programs like Georgia, like Tennessee and, of course, like Vanderbilt who's coming along and doing some wonderful things," Barlow said after scheduling three future games against SEC opponents. "Just being able to go and play in those stadiums and get that experience for our young men here and our coaches is going to be exciting. Obviously, we know that it's a huge task and a huge challenge, but I just look forward to being in that atmosphere and that environment."
While Tennessee State is not the most exciting opponent for Georgia, pay to play games are important for smaller programs. Tennessee State's last game against an FBS opponent came in 2023 when the Tigers lost to Notre Dame 56-3.

Most overrated, underrated teams in new US LBM Coaches Poll

In what should be a year of parity in the college football landscape, all eyes are on the preseason polls to see who rises to the top and who might falter entirely. The latest US LBM coaches poll was just released today and gives college football fans the latest insights into who the coaches are thinking will be the best teams in the country. Nevertheless, no one thinks that they always get things right, especially with so much change overtaking the sport. Thus, some teams will be rated as either over or underrated as a result. Here are some teams who could fit both categories. Overrated: Notre Dame It feels hard to knock last year's CFP championship game runner-ups, but they are definitely a squad in flux going into this season. All eyes will be on who emerges in the QB room between redshirt freshman CJ Carr and sophomore Kenny Minchey. With not even a start to either of their names, there could be several growing pains for the winner of the job. They do return one of the best RB tandems in the country in Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, but still leave a lot to be desired in terms of wide receiver depth. It seems as if Marcus Freeman and Co. are relying on yet another breakout campaign from Jaden Greathouse to keep them afloat. Ranked 5th in the coaches poll, the Fighting Irish must make a seamless transition from Leonard to either Carr or Minchey and prove that they can hit the ground running unlike previous years. Underrated: Clemson Many pundits and analysts alike were saying that Clemson could emerge as the top team in the nation. After all, they return arguably the most experienced QB in the nation in Cade Klubnik, a young and scrappy WR corps whose best performances all came in the Big Ten championship and CFP first round games, and two of the best edge talents in Peter Woods and TJ Parker. It must have come as some surprise to may then when they were ranked 6th. Perhaps it's due to the relative weakness of the ACC with only three ranked squads, but Clemson has the chance to have some of the best wins in the country. Their schedule is bookended by games against 9th-ranked LSU and 13th ranked South Carolina. Win both of those non-conference games and this ranking could look silly. Look for Klubnik to potentially lead the country in passing yards, improving on his 3,639 from last season and for Bryant Wesco Jr to have a breakout campaign at receiver. Overrated: Florida Florida are seemingly a team bolstered by the hype surrounding the backfield partnership of DJ Lagway and Jadan Baugh. On one hand, when both are on the field, Florida have unmatched levels of dynamism that can shock the SEC's elite. But with Lagway sidelined this spring recuperating from a season-ending leg injury, their ranking at No. 17 seems precarious, especially considering they are ahead of several CFP teams from last year as well in Tennessee and Indiana. In order for this ranking to hold, Lagway has to show signs of recovery quickly while most importantly, maintaining that dynamic element he can bring to the table. Florida have a grueling five game stretch that sees them play all of LSU, Miami and Texas A&M on the road with a game at home against the top-ranked Longhorns thrown in for good measure. Lagway has to be up for the task, or else it will be a rocky season in the Swamp for the Gators. Underrated: Indiana The fact that Indiana made the CFP last year against all odds, returned most of their offensive and defensive production, and are only ranked 19th in the coaches poll is staggering. While it will hard to replicate last year, it is not as if they don't have the talent and depth to do so again. Add in the fact they avoid the second ranked Buckeyes altogether and there won't be much shock should they go 10-2 again. Cal transfer Fernando Mendoza can aptly replace the production of Kurtis Rourke, throwing for just over 3,000 yards last year. Roman Hemby adds depth to the RB room coming in from Maryland. And Elijah Sarratt is a true WR1 with 957 yards and eight touchdowns last year. Their biggest games of the season do come on the road to take on the third ranked Nittany Lions and seventh-ranked Oregon Ducks, but chances are they won't have to win both games in the new Big Ten format. Something tells me you won't have to be Googling anyone with the Hoosiers this year, as they have well and truly arrived. Overrated: BYU BYU just got a whole lot more interesting to follow after the sour departure of Jake Retzlaff. While they return some talent in LJ Martin at the running back spot, the loss of Retzlaff is a major hit for the passing game. Now, the Cougars must turn to either Utah State transfer Mccae Hillstead or former Westerm Michigan man Treyson Bourguet. While both have experience at the position, they must prove they can elevate this offense enough to be worthy of their top-25 ranking. At No. 23, the Cougars have a great opportunity to move up if there is chaos above them. The fact they are a Big 12 member helps as well, as the parity will play into their hands. Nevertheless, I'm not as high on this year's iteration of the Cougars sans Retzlaff combined with the madness that will be the Big 12 this year. Underrated: Texas Tech Speaking of the Big 12, it may have an emerging dark horse contender. The Texas Tech Red Raiders may not have been on everyone's radar, but after a massive transfer haul that saw them be the No. 1 team in the cycle, the hype surrounding the Red Raiders only grew. This is now one of the most experienced and deepest squads in the Big 12 led by senior QB Behren Morton. The highlights from the transfer portal however, come on the other side of the ball. Headlined by the former Stanford linebacker David Bailey and Georgia Tech man Romello Height, this Texas Tech defense is primed to wreak havoc on opposing offenses week in and week out. A game every Red Raider fan should be circling is their road contest Oct. 18 against the defending Big 12 champs and 11th- ranked Arizona State. Win that game and the Red Raiders could be on dark horse watch not just for the Big 12 for a shock run at the CFP as well. Joel Klatt calls Iowa football 'underrated' in top 25, makes bold schedule prediction

Thoughts on @joelklatt's Preseason Top 25? College football is nearing. The air is crisp in the mornings, the pads are popping, and fans are eagerly awaiting kickoff. As that approaches, preseason rankings come rolling out in bunches. In the US LBM Coaches Poll, the Iowa Hawkeyes were on the outside looking in, although they did receive some votes. If they can rattle off a few early-season wins, their spot in that poll will be quickly earned. Another poll, this one from Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt, gives the Hawkeyes some more respect. He has the Hawkeyes inside his top 25 entering the season, placing them at No. 22 in the country. Klatt elaborated on the Hawkeyes during his show. "So, what do I trust about 22? Defense. Iowa. Give me Iowa at 22. You're trying to find these teams at the back-end of the top 25. These are the eight-nine-win teams during the course of the year. Do we think that Iowa can do that? Yeah. Do we think that they can do more? Yeah, probably, this might even be a bit underrated of the Iowa Hawkeyes," Klatt said. "Here's what I'm most excited about for Iowa. It's not just that it's Kirk Ferentz or Phil Parker, the defensive coordinator, and that defense and the consistency of what they bring in. It's this new quarterback they've got, Mark Gronowski," said Klatt. "Mark Gronowski is a guy that I think could turn them around. This guy might be a little different. Mark Gronowski transfers in from South Dakota State, which has been one of the premier FCS programs around. He won the FCS Heisman back in 2023. He's won two, not one, but two national championships at that level, and he's started 55 games. This is the type of guy who can pop. Experience over talent," Klatt said about Mark Gronowski. Klatt, very high on Iowa, believes that the Cy-Hawk game against Iowa State in Week 2, which he will be announcing, could be a measuring stick for both teams, who are among his top 25. His belief in Iowa did not end at the quarterback position. Joel Klatt went on to predict a bold upset win for Iowa against one of the two premier Big Ten opponents that will enter Kinnick Stadium this fall. "Their two toughest games are against Oregon and Penn State. Both of those games are at home in Kinnick. What do we know about Kinnick? This is where top 10 teams go to die. Someone is going to lose in Kinnick. I think Oregon or Penn State is going to get beat by Iowa," Klatt ended with. Falcons rookie Walker returns from minor injury and hopes to play in preseason opener against Lions

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — After missing much of the first week of training camp with a minor hamstring injury, Atlanta Falcons first-round pick Jalon Walker returned to practice on Monday. Walker said he hopes to play in Friday night's first preseason game against the Detroit Lions. 'I feel good,' Walker said. 'I'm feeling so happy to be back out here. Happy for the week. It's a big week of this first preseason game and excited to get things going." The Falcons selected Walker from Georgia with the No. 15 overall pick in the draft. Walker won the 2024 Butkus Award as the nation's best linebacker and has the potential to play a hybrid role in the NFL as a linebacker and edge rusher. For now, the Falcons want Walker to focus on edge rusher but plan to utilize his versatility. Coach Raheem Morris said Monday the opportunities at linebacker will come 'pretty quickly, you know, as soon as he gets more comfortable out there moving around.' Morris said Walker (6-2, 245) is 'already starting to pick some of those things up, cross training on some of those things already. He's very smart, very sharp, very detailed guy. So nothing you worry about from that standpoint. But I just want to give him a chance to be comfortable doing something first, see that happen, come to life.' Morris said the Falcons were careful to protect Walker from aggravating the injury last week even though the rookie was impatient to join his teammates. The caution continued on Monday as Walker's exposure to practice was limited. After drafting Walker, the Falcons traded with the Los Angeles Rams to add Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr. at No. 26. Penix, Cousins to sit out preseason opener Morris said starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and backup Kirk Cousins will not play in the preseason opener against Detroit. Easton Stick and Emory Jones will share the snaps. Penix said he might be considered for preseason games if not for his starts in the final three games of his 2024 rookie season. 'He feels confident in what I can do on game day,' said Penix of Morris. 'So he didn't feel like I needed to play this week. I'm going to be ready Week 1.' Morris said other decisions will be made following the team's scrimmage on Wednesday. Morris takes a tumble Morris lined up as a defensive back against wide receiver Drake London during practice. The coach didn't fare well, as he was pushed back and landed on his backside. Penix, who threw the pass to London on the play, paused when asked about Morris as a player. 'He's a coach now,' Penix said with a smile. 'He's got to leave the DB stuff back from when he was playing.' Pearce lands in another scuffle Pearce continued to build on his reputation for aggressive play by landing in another practice scuffle, this time with offensive lineman Tyrone Wheatley Jr. The rookie had encounters with right tackle Kaleb McGary and right guard Matthew Bergeron last week. 'It's just the competitor in him,' said Walker of Pearce. 'You get after it. And like I said, we've got that one speed and once we click it on, it's on.' Asked about Pearce's early impact in practice, Penix said 'I notice his love for the game. He works extremely hard each and every day. ... Whatever happens after the play, we definitely want to clean that stuff up. But at the same time he's a competitor and he wants to compete at a high level. That's what he does each and every day and that's what we appreciate and that's what we're going to love come game day.' Contract extension for McGary McGary agreed to a two-year, $30 million extension, according to his agent, Collin Roberts. The deal was first reported by ESPN. McGary, a first-round pick in 2019, has started 92 of 93 games in six seasons. ___ AP NFL:
