Phil Robertson dies: Was Duck Dynasty star a better QB than Terry Bradshaw? Exploring his football career

Hindustan Times26-05-2025

Phil Robertson, popular for starring in the reality show 'Duck Dynasty', died at the age of 79, his family announced on Sunday. In a Facebook post, Robertson's daughter-in-law wrote that they are 'grateful for his life on earth'. Meanwhile, several football fans dug into Robertson's college days to find that he was once a starter for Louisiana Tech while Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw warmed the bench.
Born April 24, 1946, in Vivian, Louisiana, Robertson was a three-sport high school star (football, baseball, track) at North Caddo High, earning all-state honors. At Louisiana Tech (1965–1967), he played quarterback for the Bulldogs, starting in 1966 and 1967, with Terry Bradshaw, a highly-touted freshman, as his backup.

Passing: 179 completions on 411 attempts (43.5%), 2,237 yards, 12 touchdowns, 34 interceptions.
Record: Tech went 8-20 during his tenure, with a 1-9 record in 1966, including a 34-0 loss to Alabama, where Bear Bryant praised Robertson's arm.
E.J. Lewis, a defensive backs coach, said, 'He had a good presence in the pocket… that booger could chuck that football." His quick release was compared to Joe Namath's by Bradshaw. However, his 34 interceptions (18 in 1966, 14 in 1967) and low completion rate reflect inconsistency.

In 1968, Robertson quit football before his senior year, ceding the starting role to Bradshaw. He declined NFL interest from the Washington Redskins, who offered $60,000, as it clashed with duck season. He earned a bachelor's in physical education and a master's in education, later founding Duck Commander.
Lewis further said: 'The headline in the Shreveport Times was 'Bradshaw is coming to Louisiana Tech' and [Phil] saw that and he wanted to quit." He and the university's president even tried talking to Robertson, urging him to stay.
Robertson stayed, but did not continue football. Bradshaw, meanwhile, went on to win four Super Bowl titles in a six-year span with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Is Travis Kelce done with football? Hollywood move sparks rumors of secret retirement plan

Travis Kelce is strategically positioning himself for a post-NFL career in Hollywood (Getty Images) Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce appears to be seriously paving the way for a post-football career, and it's not just through endorsements or podcasting — he's heading straight for Hollywood. With retirement discussions intensifying, Kelce is aligning his off-field presence with opportunities that suggest he's gearing up for a full pivot into entertainment. From Super Bowl Sundays to silver screen stardom: Travis Kelce prepares for life after football Travis Kelce's first major acting role will come in the highly anticipated Happy Gilmore 2, starring Adam Sandler. Sandler himself had high praise for the tight end: 'We have a nice something for Travis... What a big handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He's a stud, and he's so funny.' This isn't Kelce's first brush with TV — he previously appeared in FX's horror series Grotesquerie and the 2020 sci-fi comedy Moonbase 8. But this upcoming film marks his cinematic debut, and one that could launch him into a new stratosphere of stardom. Podcasting power moves and a strategic agency shift signal serious career planning Kelce and his brother Jason recently inked a massive $100 million deal with Amazon for their New Heights podcast, which has become a cultural phenomenon. The podcast not only expanded their fanbase but also cemented the Kelce brothers as media personalities beyond football. Behind the scenes, Kelce's management team, A&A Management, was acquired by entertainment powerhouse 3 Arts Entertainment — a move that aligns with long-term plans to transition smoothly into film and TV. The Eanes brothers, who represent Kelce, have drawn comparisons between him and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, noting Kelce's rare mix of charisma, athleticism, and on-screen potential. It's a bold comparison, but not an unreasonable one. The NFL star's personality, already beloved by fans, seems tailor-made for the screen. Despite rising fame, Travis Kelce insists he's not done with football — yet Though Kelce remains under contract with the Chiefs through 2027, he has openly acknowledged that the end of his NFL career is approaching. After the team fell short of a Super Bowl three-peat, many speculated that Kelce might hang up his cleats. However, he confirmed that he would return for at least one more season. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes quickly shut down any talk of Kelce coasting to retirement: 'The way he's talking about football… he doesn't seem like a guy on his last ride.' Kelce's path forward seems clear — dominate on the field for one last run, then take on Hollywood full force. Rams pass rusher Jared Verse ready to build on strong rookie season

LOS ANGELES — Jared Verse came was as advertised in his debut season for the Los Angeles Rams, offering explosive pass rush prowess en route to NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. After totaling 77 pressures, 11 tackles for loss and 4 1/2 sacks last season, the outside linebacker isn't worried about a sophomore slump. 'I don't really feel too much pressure,' Verse said Tuesday after practice during organized team activities. "If I'm who I am, if I take the strides needed to take, I'm going to be the best version of me, and I'm going to be able to help the team in any facet or way that they need." Verse already has one year of dealing with immense expectations under his belt. Drafted 19th overall in 2024, the Florida State product had to handle the belief he would help the Rams to navigate the retirement of eight-time All-Pro defensive lineman Aaron Donald. The pass rush was able to do just that, but Verse said it came from a collective effort rather than his or any other individual performance. Verse, fellow Seminole rookie Braden Fiske and second-year standouts Kobie Turner and Byron Young combined for 28 1/2 sacks and 43 tackles for loss in the regular season. It took time for Verse and Fiske to recognize fully integrating into the defense required more than working off one another the way they had in college. 'I think we did good, but I think we became more so focused on helping the team than trying to do our own thing and have a good little duo going on,' Verse said. 'But I think we kind of have learned the opportunities that we have to work together.' Combined with Verse's improved understanding of how quickly the game moves in the NFL as the season went on, he closed out the campaign with a fumble return for a touchdown in an NFC wild-card round win over the Minnesota Vikings and two sacks and three tackles for loss in a six-point divisional round loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. 'The number one thing you hear is how much faster the game is at this level versus college,' Verse said. 'Everybody's always like, 'Oh, it's not.' The hell it is, man. You're thrown in that fire, nah, it's a lot faster. Yeah, it was surprising, but once I got the hang of it, it became just like college, it became just like high school, slowed down a lot more.' Verse already feels well ahead of where he was at this time last year. He was determined to make the most of a full offseason without having to prepare for the draft or handle the uncertainty that comes with going through everything for the first time. That included a full review of all of Verse's game film from last season. The study allowed him to see how many chances he missed out on as a rookie. 'Probably the biggest thing I realized was how many sacks, not even just sacks, but big plays I missed out on,' he said. 'You know, dropping in coverage I could have done this, or rushing the passer could have done that. Even in the run game a couple times, there's a couple things where I'm a little too far inside, a little too far outside, and I could have made a big impact play. So realizing that this really is a game of inches, whether it's just like stopping the ball or actually just doing your job, there's a couple things I could have done better.' All those steps, along with continued development from his work with outside linebackers coach Joe Coniglio and defensive line coach Giff Smith, were evident to defensive coordinator Chris Shula in Verse's work during practice. 'You can tell he's really taken the techniques that Joe and Giff are really teaching him and applying them on the field,' Shula said. 'And I think things have slowed down for him a little bit, and he's playing really fast right now.' Verse has one more week of work in Southern California before the Rams hold their mandatory minicamp in Maui. The loquacious Verse is looking forward to a return visit after vacationing there for first time earlier this year, but don't expect to see him wading out in the Pacific Ocean during his free time. 'I don't know what's out in that water,' Verse said. 'I'm good.' /hub/NFL
