Farmers uncover surprising potential in insect waste for growing essential crops: 'It's exciting for so many reasons'

Fly poop may be the next generation of composting, according to the BBC.
Black soldier fly larvae are able to digest four times their own body mass in organic matter every day. Some farms are leveraging their excrement, frass, as a rich agricultural soil amendment.
"We could make compost out of anything but the impact of running it through this insect biology has all of these [positive] implications," said Oregon wine farmer Mimi Casteel, per the BBC.
"It's exciting for so many reasons: It's a portable, pretty low-cost investment compared to some other things that we're considering as part of dealing with our massive problems with waste, and soldier flies are replacing a missing layer of diversity," Casteel continued.
One of the major benefits of applying frass to cropland is that the benefits propagate on their own. After enough applications, more frass isn't necessarily needed as beneficial microbes procreate.
Anecdotal results show that plants are growing more quickly and with greater cellular structure when frass is applied to the soil, though the results of a long-term study are still on the way. Industrial agricultural practices have significantly degraded soil quality, so regenerative practices are needed, even if only to maintain yields.
The promise of frass has attracted bipartisan government support. The Fertilizer Production Expansion Program has provided funding to three farms working on producing frass. With dramatic declines in insect populations, one of those manufacturers, Chapul Farms, sees an opportunity to repair a degrading part of our ecosystems.
"Ultimately, at its core, we cannot survive without insects," said Chapul Farms CEO Pat Crowley, per the BBC. "Natural ecosystems cannot flourish ... without the insects as a part of them. And that's one of our biggest premises."
Crowley added, "It's not as simple as: insects will solve the biggest trends in global agricultural health. And at the same time, I think it's one of the biggest levers that we have in making agriculture a more resilient, ecosystem-based model."

A recent BBC report suggests that cerumen, commonly known as earwax, may harbor biomarkers to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and metabolic disorders. Cerumen Profile The primary function of cerumen is to keep the external auditory canal clean and lubricated, preventing invasion by bacteria, fungi, and insects. Beyond this, cerumen may reflect systemic metabolism by concentrating a broader array of compounds than blood, urine, sweat, and tears. Its relative stability allows the accumulated cerumen to provide long-term snapshots of metabolic changes. Disease Associations Researchers have defined genetically determined wet and dry cerumen phenotypes. In the US, Caucasian, African American, and German women with wet cerumen faced roughly four times the risk of dying from breast cancer compared with Japanese and Taiwanese women with dry cerumen. The study found that Japanese women with breast cancer were more likely to carry the wet-cerumen allele than were healthy controls. However, large-scale studies in Germany, Australia, and Italy failed to confirm these associations. A recent analysis reported that patients with Ménière's disease had lower levels of three fatty acids in the cerumen compared with healthy controls — the first biomarker identified for that disorder. In a 2019 study led by Nelson Roberto Antoniosi Filho, PhD (Federal University of Goiás Goiânia in Brazil), researchers analyzed cerumen samples from 52 patients with lymphoma, carcinoma, or leukemia and 50 healthy volunteers, using a method that identifies volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The researchers identified 27 VOCs that served as diagnostic fingerprints for cancer, predicting the cancer status with 100% accuracy. The assay could not distinguish among cancer types, indicating that these VOCs represent a general response to malignant cells. Another investigation by the same group showed that cerumen analysis can detect metabolic disturbances in premalignant stages when cells exhibit dysplastic changes that may lead to cancer but remain nonmalignant, potentially enabling much earlier intervention. The team is also investigating whether metabolic alterations caused by neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, can be detected in the cerumen. Diagnostic Tool Antoniosi Filho and colleagues proposed that cancer, as a mitochondrial metabolic disorder, releases VOCs that accumulate in cerumen, allowing differentiation between healthy and cancerous individuals via an assay they call the cerumenogram. The aim was to develop a cerumenogram as a diagnostic tool to accurately predict certain cancers from a small cerumen sample. Clinical Adoption Hospital Amaral Carvalho in Jaú, São Paulo — a national reference center for oncology and bone marrow transplantation — has recently implemented cerumenograms for cancer diagnosis and monitoring. Future Directions An April 2025 paper in Scientific Reports by Antoniosi Filho concluded that the cerumenogram could: 1. Identify oncologic risk by detecting premalignant cells before cancer onset, introducing a novel screening modality 2. Show that mitochondrial impairment in premalignant cells — such as hypermetabolic inflammation and dysplasia — produces the same VOC biomarkers as malignant cells, distinct from those in benign lesions, opening new paths for risk management and early intervention 3. Correlate cerumenogram findings with established imaging techniques such as 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-D-glucose PET/CT (18F-FDG PET/CT) and gallium-68 PSMA PET/CT, demonstrating alignment with clinical results while offering a noninvasive, lower-cost alternative 4. Monitor treatment response and cancer remission, supporting assessment of therapeutic efficacy and cellular return to normal 5. Confirm metabolic indicators of malignancy to guide clinical decisions alongside imaging and biopsy 6. Drive the development of targeted therapies aimed at metabolites overproduced in malignant conditions. In conclusion, the cerumenogram may serve as a valuable assay for evaluating precancerous indicators, cancer progression, and remission, with the potential to reduce mortality, alleviate patient suffering, and lower disease-related costs. ‘Vast Majority' of new homes will have solar panels, says Miliband

Builders could be required to install solar panels on the 'vast majority' of new homes in England, according to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband. It comes a month after Downing Street confirmed the panels should be installed on as many new properties as possible amid speculation that ministers will make them a mandatory requirement on new builds by 2027. Speaking to the BBC, Mr Miliband described the proposed policy as 'just common sense' and said the panels should be 'almost universal' on English homes. Changes to regulations will be laid out in the Future Homes Standard, due to be published later this year. The previous Conservative Government considered a proposal that would have mandated rooftop solar panels to cover 40% of a building's ground area or equivalent. 'The problem about the previous system was that it said you would had to have a certain percentage of coverage of solar panels, but if you couldn't achieve that percentage, you didn't have to do anything at all,' Mr Miliband said. 'Under our plans, we are not going to say that. We are going to say even if you can't hit 40% you will still have to have some solar panels, except in rare, exceptional cases.' He added that the number of homes fitted with solar panels needed to be 'much higher'. The policy is estimated to add between £3,000 and £4,000 to the cost of construction, but to then save owners more than £1,000 on their annual energy bills, according to the Times, which first reported the change. Asked in May whether housebuilders would be legally required to fit the panels, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's official spokesman said: 'Of course we want to see solar panels on as many new homes as possible. 'The Future Homes Standard, which will be published in the coming months, will include measures to drive this, we're working on the detail of that and will provide an update on that in due course. 'But it's good news for householders who want lower energy bills.' Under the Government's new proposals, 80% of new builds would reportedly be required to have solar panels covering 40% of their ground area, while 19% would have slightly fewer because of exemptions, including roof pitch and overshading. Ministers last year rejected a private members' Bill aiming to force housebuilders to install solar panels on the roof of every new home, saying the proposals would potentially slow down construction and add to building manifesto included a pledge to build 1.5 million new homes over the course of the Parliament.

Could AI cost me my job as a weather forecaster?

Weather forecasts play a huge role in our daily lives. They help us to decide how we get to work, if we need an umbrella and when to hang out the washing. For industries like farming, shipping, aviation and renewable energy, accurate forecasts are essential. I've been presenting the weather on the BBC for nearly 30 years. Over that time, I've witnessed how our changing climate is bringing more extreme and intense weather events. It is so important to keep improving the way we predict the weather, and scientists are exploring how AI could make forecasting more accurate, efficient, and faster than ever before. In some countries, broadcasters have even begun to experiment with AI-generated weather presenters. But does all this mean that forecasters like me could soon be out of a job? The people who think AI might become conscious UK weather forecast more accurate with Met Office supercomputer Traditionally, weather forecasting relies on complex numerical weather prediction models which require vast amounts of data and supercomputers - like the ones used by the Met Office. But the Met Office is now working with experts from the Alan Turing Institute, the UK's national centre for data science and AI, to build a new global forecasting system powered by AI. One of their models, called FastNet, uses machine learning to improve prediction capabilities. Prof Kirstine Dale, Chief AI Officer at the Met Office, said it had the potential to revolutionise forecasting. "AI is phenomenally fast - not just a bit faster, but tens of thousands of times faster," she told me. "That means it can produce up to date forecasts with a fraction of the computational cost and carbon dioxide." She said AI could also produce "hyper-localised" forecasts, "potentially offering more up to date forecasts tailored to your postcode". Forecasts driven by AI could also help to mitigate against the impacts of storms, floods and heatwaves by providing earlier and more accurate warnings of severe weather. But there are challenges - especially in predicting rare or extreme weather events. "The past is no longer a reliable indicator of the future," said Prof Dale. "So we need traditional numerical weather prediction (NWP) models to explore how the climate may change and generate recalibrated datasets. "These recalibrated datasets of future climates can be used to train AI-based models. "AI-based models simply aren't aware of the physics - and changing physics - of the atmosphere, so NWP will likely continue to play a vital role in forecasting extreme events, as well as adding a layer of validation to AI forecasting outputs." Dr Scott Hosking, Mission Director for Environmental Forecasting at the Turing Institute, said that once trained, AI models were cheaper and quicker to run than traditional forecasting systems. "AI has surprised us in a number of ways," said Dr Hosking. "One of them is how well it predicts the tracks of cyclones and hurricanes. AI is always learning what it has seen in the past." But he said AI still had some way to go in certain areas, including in its ability to forecast high-intensity rainfall - the kind that often leads to flash flooding. AI could also play a key role in space weather forecasting, helping to predict solar storms more accurately and efficiently. These storms, caused by solar activity, are best known for producing the aurora borealis - the Northern Lights - which have been seen in Wales several times recently. But space weather can be hazardous too, affecting Earth's magnetic field and potentially disrupting communication systems and infrastructure. Dr Huw Morgan, Head of Solar System Physics at Aberystwyth University, led a project to enhance the Met Office's space weather forecasting. Speaking from the university's AI Hub, he told me AI could offer a vital role. "It's a very complicated system to try to model. Forecasts exist but they have many weaknesses because space weather is so complex," Dr Morgan said. "And unlike on Earth, we can't put recording stations on the Sun or between the Sun and Earth. "We are really dependent on remote data from telescopes. "So AI offers a good solution, because we can't monitor the whole system constantly, and we cannot really build models that are appropriate for the system yet." However, Dr Morgan acknowledges AI has its challenges and scientists will continue to rely on traditional space weather forecasting techniques for now. So what about AI-generated weather presenters? Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern is not so sure. "It's important for people to have presenters they trust," he told me. "No one wants an AI version of Derek. "They want the real Derek - someone who can take all the data and explain it in a way that makes sense." Aidan is optimistic about what the future holds for forecasting. "When I started this job 18 years ago, we couldn't really predict beyond four or five days. "Now we're giving outlooks 10 or even 14 days ahead. "We may not be able to give specific details that far out but we can already offer a sense of whether it'll be warm or cold, wet or dry - and highlight big changes on the way. "And with AI, the potential only grows. "Just imagine - in the near future, we might be able to talk about a month's worth of weather at once, and visualise it in a way that really connects with the public. "That's hugely exciting." The potential for AI in weather prediction is immense, but AI won't replace traditional forecasting methods entirely. It's more likely to work alongside them and be another tool for meteorologists like me to use. For now, at least, I think my job is safe.
