Keira Knightley Reflects on 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Criticisms: 'I Was Seen As A Terrible Actress'
Keira Knightley Reflects on 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Criticisms: 'I Was Seen As A Terrible Actress' originally appeared on Parade.
Just as it's impossible to imagine anyone but Johnny Depp playing the swaggering buccaneer captain Jack Sparrow, it's practically unthinkable to picture anyone else portraying Pirates of the Caribbean's Elizabeth Swann save for Keira Knightley.
Starring in the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films at a remarkably young age, Knightley served as one of the principal stars in the Disney-produced action fantasy series. Maintaining exceptional chemistry with co-stars Depp and Orlando Bloom, Knightley's role in the franchise launched the actress to new heights in the film industry.
Looking back at her time in the series, however, the 40-year-old Oscar-nominated actress tends to view the franchise with a certain degree of bafflement.
Speaking with fellow actress Rosamund Pike in a piece for Vanity Fair, Knightley specifically highlighted the criticisms she faced for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, especially when held up to her critically acclaimed role in Pride & Prejudice in 2005.
At the time, Knightley had received her first Academy Award nomination for portraying Pride & Prejudice's lovesick protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet. Though critical favor for her role in the Jane Austen adaptation was nothing less than extraordinary, Knightley soon said she faced criticism for her role in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel.
"Yes, it was pretty big for my career," Knightley said of the Oscar nomination. "If people will come up to me, it'll be about that one. Pirates of the Caribbean had already come out, but I think in the public consciousness, I was seen as a terrible actress. But I had this phenomenally big success with Pirates. And I think this was the first one that was a phenomenally big success, but was also critically acclaimed."
"So I remember it coming out maybe the same year, maybe around the same time as Pirates 2," the actress continued. "And I got the worst reviews ever for that, and then also being nominated for an Oscar at the same time — it was, in my 21-year-old head, quite confusing."

Fashion Icon Keira Knightley Goes Back to Her Rocker-Chic Style Roots for the Vogue 25
Keira Knightley subtly paid homage to her rocker-chic era in her latest photoshoot, and it has us feeling nostalgic! For British Vogue's July 2025 Issue, they made a gorgeous campaign called 'The Vogue 25: Meet The Women Defining Britain In 2025.' This issue is filled with stars like Amal Clooney, designer Dilara Findikoglu, The Princess of Wales, singer Chloe Qisha, and of course, Knightley. (You can see the photos from the issue HERE!) More from SheKnows The Actress Playing Carolyn Bessette in the Upcoming Anthology Had to Undergo a Serious Transformation And for the issue, we can see that Knightley went back to her rocker chic fashion by rocking a dark denim vest, a white shirt, and jeans from Chanel. It's an elegant version of rocker chic, but it totally reminds us of her fashion in the early 2000s. Back in 2001, for her first-ever red carpet moment, she went to the Bridget Jones's Diary London premiere in a truly rocker ensemble: black leather pants and a sheer black camisole with a matching lace bra underneath. She often wore black at premieres in the early 2000s, including at the 200s London premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean The Curse of the Black Pearl, when she wore a gothic dark shirt and jeans. Along with that, she wore a lace-up corset for the Love Actually premiere, her Domino era, and lots of fur-lined ensembles until 2005. 2000 to 2005 was her rocker era, and we love that she's paying homage to that in her photoshoot. Now, along with being a fashion icon, Knightley has learned how to turn out the haters when it comes to her looks. In a previous interview with The Talks, the Nutcracker star discussed how she stopped caring about the random backlash she got (even on the red carpet) as she's gotten older. 'I learned you can say nothing, you can be perfectly smiling, wearing a perfectly nice dress at the opening of a charity and people can still despise you for it,' she said. She also spoke to Vogue about growing older, saying, 'It's quite nice to have lived your life and have lived experiences. And be like, 'Well, I've been through that and I've come out the other side. And here we are and it's all a bit chaotic, but you can go on.''Best of SheKnows Every Single Time Kate Middleton's Royal Fashion Made Us Stop in Our Tracks Ariana Madix, Kristen Stewart, & More Stars Who Had Dramatic Hair Changes Which One of Donald's Trump's Kids Has The Highest Net Worth?
