US data centre company Vantage has secured planning consent for another project in Wales

US company Vantage Data Centers has secured approval for another major data centre project in Wales.

The company, which already operates a data centre campus on the outskirts of Cardiff and has plans for a 10-centre complex at the former Ford engine plant in Bridgend, has now secured approval for another scheme at the Welsh Government-owned Bro Tathan business park in St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Vale of Glamorgan Council has granted planning consent for a development with a 120-megawatt storage capacity.

The Welsh Government was asked to comment including whether it intends to enter into a land deal with Vantage or arrange a lease for the site. However it said it could not comment citing commercial sensitivities. Vantage said it didn't have any additional comment to provide at this time.
This latest project follows Vantage's submission in June of its plans for the Ford engine plant site to Bridgend council.
If approved the scheme could eventually see a cluster of 10 data centres built over a 10-to-15-year period at a site just two miles from Bridgend town centre along with three electricity substations. The campus would be roughly four times the capacity and size of Vantage's existing Newport site. Once operational it is projected to support 600 jobs and generate around £8.3m annually in business rates for the local authority.

Vantage said the campus will be net zero by 2030, powered by renewable energy, using minimal water, and capable of providing waste heat to local heating networks.
Earlier this year Vantage announced plans to invest £12bn in the UK with Wales expected to receive the lion's share of that investment.
Subject to planning consents and the necessary National Grid connections the company said the expansion would create 11,500 jobs of which around 10,000 would be construction related with 1,500 roles at the data centres themselves.

The expansion is being driven by the increasing adoption of AI. The Cardiff Bay administration previously said it has been working closely with the US firm since 2020 to support the development of its data centres in Wales.
Wales is also set to host a UK Government-backed AI investment zone. While its location has yet to be confirmed it could potentially include Vantage's planned data centre projects in Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan.
Vantage is also appraising over sites in south Wales for potential further data centre investment.

UK's best-selling car with 'reasonable' running costs named as Brits cut back

Showing strong sales month after month, this best-selling model's appeal lies in its enjoyable driving experience, reasonable running costs and attractive pricing With Brit buyers looking to save money amid rising costs and economic uncertainty, the Ford Puma remains the UK's best-selling car, in no small part due to its economical running costs. ‌ Eight months into 2025, the Puma is continuing its strong run. 30,764 units have already been registered so far this year, marking a major milestone for Ford and holding onto the top spot the manufacturer first seized in 2024. ‌ Showing strong sales month after month, the Puma's appeal lies in its enjoyable driving experience, reasonable running costs and attractive pricing — especially in a market where UK consumers are increasingly looking for budget-friendly vehicles. It comes after news anyone buying fuel next week given '£15 charge' warning by The AA. ‌ But the broader new car market isn't so positive, with July ushering in the the end of two months of solid market growth and car registrations down five per cent year-on-year to 140,154 units, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This means it is the weakest July performance since 2022 and almost 11 per cent below pre-pandemic levels. Private and fleet demand both fell, with only small segments — such as mini and luxury saloon models — showing any signs of growth. While the year-to-date market is still up by 2.4 per cent on 2024, volatile sales, cost-of-living pressures and ongoing uncertainty all add up to buyers are being extra cautious and prioritising value. ‌ This trend is reflected in the Ford Puma's popularity, with many buyers prioritising reasonable upfront costs and efficiency over premium features and performance. Running costs are a big part of the Puma's appeal, with the newly launched Puma Gen-E electric vehicle (EV) offering real-world range of up to 233 miles on a single charge, competitive pricing and fast charging from 10 to 80 per cent in just 23 minutes. With government grants making EVs more accessible, the Gen-E is expected to attract even more budget-conscious buyers eager to reduce running costs. ‌ Despite all the positives, the Ford Puma isn't without its detractors, with one commenter on AutoTrader saying: "While the Puma's handling is still leagues ahead of its competition, the amount of standard equipment is not generous, and the interior falls behind rivals like the Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008. "As a result, the Puma's uninterrupted reign over other compact crossovers no longer feels guaranteed, and it risks getting lost in the ever-growing jungle of small family SUVs." So Ford's focus — pun intended — on keeping costs to a minimum means the Puma maintains its spot as the UK's best-selling car, for now at least.

Japanese car firms at bottom of UK electric sales ranking

The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) think tank, which conducted the research, said the stakes 'could not be higher' for car companies which do not prioritise the transition to electric motoring. Honda had the largest decrease for UK EV sales in the first six months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, at 92%. Mazda recorded the second biggest drop at 76%. Nissan saw a 69% fall, but the ECIU noted the company is retooling its factory in Sunderland to build three new EV models, which will likely drive significant uptake. At the other end of the scale, Ford saw the biggest year-on-year increase, with UK EV sales more than four times higher, partly because of the launch of the Ford Puma Gen-E. The top five also included Renault and Volkswagen, which both saw UK sales of their EVs more than treble. Colin Walker, head of transport at the ECIU, told the PA news agency: 'Traditional brands are fighting back, dramatically increasing the number of EVs they sell in what is now the world's fourth largest EV market. 'Legacy manufacturers are proving more than capable of making the transition to building the electric cars of the future with European manufacturers dominating.' A report by consultancy CBI Economics found a failure by the automotive sector to make the transition to manufacturing EVs could see its contribution to the UK economy fall by as much as £34.1 billion, with the loss of more than 400,000 jobs. Mr Walker said: 'The stakes for car companies the world over, and the car industry here in the UK, could not be higher.' Ben Nelmes, chief executive of green consultancy New Automotive, which provided the statistics for the ECIU's analysis, said: 'The race to go electric is on and our new data separates the sprinters from the stragglers. 'It is fantastic to see legacy brands like Ford, Renault and the UK's own Mini delivering for drivers with a colossal surge in EV sales. 'The message to the laggards is simple: get on and build the brilliant EVs of the future, or prepare to be left behind.' The Government has pledged to ban the sale of new fully petrol or diesel cars and vans from 2030. Sales of hybrid cars will still be permitted until 2035. Under the Government's zero emission vehicle (Zev) mandate, at least 28% of new cars sold by each manufacturer in the UK this year must be zero emission, which generally means pure electric. Across all manufacturers, the figure during the first half of the year was 21.6%. Recent changes to the mandate mean it will be easier for manufacturers who do not meet the targets to avoid fines. A spokesperson for Mazda said the brand's drop in EV sales was caused by the discontinuation of the Mazda MX-30 BEV (battery electric vehicle), but the fully electric Mazda6e will be introduced in 2026. He added: 'We will continue to meet the needs of our customers while developing a robust plan for the introduction of multiple EV models beyond 2026 that will give our customers an easy transition into electrified driving.' Honda and Nissan were approached for a comment. – Here are the top five car brands based on their increase in UK EV sales in the first half of the year:1. Ford: 324%2. BYD: 261%3. Renault: 251%4. Porsche: 203%5. Volkswagen: 201% – Here are the bottom five:1. Honda: -92%2. Mazda: -76%3. Nissan: -69%4. Toyota: -41%5. MG: -35%
