Lipa Archbishop Gilbert Garcera elected next CBCP president
Garcera, 66, currently serves as the Southeast Luzon representative on the CBCP Permanent Council. He will succeed Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David of Kalookan, who will finish his second and final term this November.
Garcera's term as CBCP president will span two years, with the possibility of reelection for one additional term. He has led the Archdiocese of Lipa—home to over 3.3 million Catholics—since 2017.
Previously, he chaired the CBCP Commission on Mission and the Commission on Family and Life. Before becoming a bishop, he held several roles within the CBCP, including assistant secretary general and national director of the Pontifical Mission Society.
Ordained in 1983 for the Archdiocese of Caceres, Garcera became bishop of Daet in 2007 before moving to Lipa in 2017. He has also held key roles in the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC).
Joining Garcera in leadership is Archbishop Julius Tonel of Zamboanga, elected as CBCP vice president. Tonel will replace Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara of Pasig. Ordained in 1980, Tonel served as bishop of Ipil before becoming archbishop of Zamboanga in 2023.
Both Garcera and Tonel will officially assume office on December 1, 2025.

Pope and Archbishop of Westminster condemn Israel's attack on Gaza church
Senior Christian figures are calling for an immediate ceasefire on Thursday after Israel launched an air strike on the Holy Family Church in Gaza, multiple media outlets reported. Pope Leo XIV said he was "deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and injury caused by the military attack," and called for a ceasefire. Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Vincent Nichols condemned the attack and also called for an immediate ceasefire. 'I condemn this appalling strike on the Holy Family Church in Gaza, pray for the dead and injured, and stand in solidarity with Father Gabriel Romanelli and the people sheltering in the compound - Christians and Muslims alike," the leader of Catholics in England and Wales said. 'For 20 months, the Church of the Holy Family has managed to be a place of sanctuary and spiritual support amidst the horrors of war, feeding and protecting hundreds of people.' Three people were killed in the attack, and ten others were wounded, including the community's parish priest, Father Gabriel Romanelli. The late Pope Francis spoke to Father Romanelli on a regular basis before his death.

Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem questions Israel's narrative that Gaza church strike was accidental
Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, has questioned Israel's official narrative that it "never targets" religious sites after it struck the Holy Family church in Gaza on Thursday morning. The Cardinal told Vatican News that: "What we know for sure is that a tank, the IDF says by mistake, but we are not sure about this, they hit the Church directly". He named the three people who died after Israel struck a church in Gaza, as Najwa Abu Daoud, Saad Issa Kostandi Salameh and Foumia Issa Latif Ayyad on Thursday. Ayyad, an 84-year-old woman, was receiving psychological support at the church, The Guardian reported. At least 600 people were sheltering at the church, mostly children and 54 with special needs, the AFP reported. The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem has jurisdiction over Catholics in Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, and Cyprus.
